  • i respect your video man... but there are seven nuts/bolts to split the case. you are right there are four nuts/bolts on the pump housing but three sizes. 1/2 7/16 and the one 5/16. (or 7/16 if you lost the screw and replaced it with a 1/4 inch bolt).... gen 1 alpha 101 man. ..... and the rubber ring between the halves is called a quad ring.

  • how does the impeller go in???

  • @RikWCrlsn

Put a little lithium grease on it, and start rotating it in the direction of which it normally travels and push hard. It will drop in.

  • what is the special tool to remove the gears?

  • well i just helped my neighbor change his waterpump. First the impeller was stuck to the shaft and we had to hacksaw it off the shaft ending by using a chisle to complete the split. It is a very strong piece of brass. We also learned the hard way that on our mercruiser outdrive you must put the shifter in foward before removing the lower unit so it will align up properly when reinstalling it.

  • thanks YOU FOR THE BASIC INFO on a lower unit, I have had mine apart as i needed to change the water impeller, but its good to have some info explained. Excellent to have this done and used as a reference tool

  • nice. Thanks for the down to earth video. Off to fix mine...

  • fantastic vid! I just boat a privateer with a mercruiser IO. Does anyone know if there is any "tell tail" discharge so you can verify the water pump is runing?

    thanks

  • @takenoprisoners82

You should see water coming out of the exhaust. If there is none, you have a problem

  • I bet that outdrive is not original. 5.0 is a V8. You really should change the impeller every season, as it will will pumping power and eventually the engine will overheat.

  • do you recommend doing anything else besides changing the oil, water pump, and gear oil. because i just got a boat from one of my buddies for free and it has a v6 Mercruiser engine in it. it says 5.0L on the out drive is there any common things that go wrong with these engines? let me know thanks. awesome video it was very helpful

  • Great video very helpful espiacialy for a newbie thanks alot you just saved me 250 bucks
