Today, 14th February 2012, we remember Captain James Cook met with his untimely death 233 years ago. I, for one, will always respect and see Captain Cook as the greatest explorer and navigator to ever set foot on this earth. RIP Captain Cook. You will never be forgotten in history.
byebyebirdy1000 Cook was one of the greatest explorers of all time.he fulfilled his talents more than anyone can hope to expect.he is a national icon in Australia and New Zealand. He expounded the ideal of scientific discovery.what have you done with your life? Will people remember you for what you contributed or did you just count time to the day of your retirement and waste your time on this earth.Cook was not wealthy in the material sense, but rich in talent and accomplishment.
Whether you're James Cook or an American soldier in Iraq today, if you go into another's country and start throwing your weight around in the name of empire, you just might end up having your liver handed to you.
squeeky805 Murder is murder, no matter which tribesmen killed Cook, or which lore they refer to regarding the history of the massacre. Because they happened to believe in living Gods that makes their actions excusable? Just because they never had the knowledge, courage or interest to enable them to discover the rest of the world doesn't mean they should not have been hospitable and helped passing explorers, no matter how many times they required assistance. We should want to help each other.
@callmeal84 You can buy it on the internet, or if you live near Melbourne I got a copy from the gift shop at Cook's cottage. Haven't seen it in stores though.
Poor reenactment! In fact, it was the chiefs that killed Cook because he was NOT the returning god Lono as was anticipated. According to Hawaiian lore, Cook was hit accidentally by a sling stone which made him bleed from his head. Seeing that he was merely a natural man, the chiefs who were around him killed him. Cook took full advantage of the generosity of the Hawaiian people while in Hawaiʻi. He knew that the Hawaiian royals worshiped him which was not the case on other Polynesian islands.
I think Cook made his decisions based on his circumstances at the time. Leaders risk their lives and many are killed. The fact is James Cook Is The Worlds Greatest Explorer and that cannot be changed. We never learn from our past about casual meetings with strangers and the enemy we face. Man Is Mans Greatest Enemy in my opinion and he's usually nearby.

it seems that the otherwise highly regarded capt cook made a series of very bad decisions that day, the first being a bit too casual about the watch on the ships boats .
