When I hear the Cars,it makes me think of nuttin but 80's baby! This was the ulimate sound for the 80's.if no other band allowed anyone that lived there to recall the 80's,The Cars would. This was a cool band with a cool sound and cool songs.May Benjamin rest in peace.
I've been a huge fan of the cars since 1979 when I was 16 and I am ashamed to say that after all this time I STILL don't know all the words to this song because every time it comes on, its almost like I go into a trance..just going along with that cool bass beat. I'm always surprised when the song is done like "Hey..where did those 5 minutes go?" The Cars always have been and always will be fabulous!
Yep, Ric sings this song on Shake it up, the song Ben sings live using the keyboard bass was Think it over, same album, but Dream away is & has always been a Ric song.
@ktbk43 i was just thinking the same thing. the cars were noted for playing their live songs exactly like the album version. they seem to let loose a little more on this one and the band really shines. oh, they were so good.
BEN ORR SINGS THIS SONG ON THE SHAKE IT UP ALBUM..WHEN I SAW THEM AT THE NASSAU COLLISEUM ON THIS TOUR NOT ONLY WAS BEN ORR SINGING THIS SONG BUT HE DID THAT "BASSLINE" ON A KEYBOARD THAT I BELIEVE WAS ON HIS LEFT AS HE STOOD CENTERSTAGE AND SANG IT.....DID I MENTION THAT HE SANG THIS SONG
@MegaTillydog - YOU ARE ABSOLUTELY WRONG !! You are confusing this with Think it Over, which Benjamin did play keyboard bass on. Ric Ocasek sings lead on Dream Away. I saw the Shake It Up tour at the Capital Center in Landover, MD just outside Washington, DC and Ric Ocasek sang lead on Dream Away.
@GetRealLLC Aaah! The good ol' Cap Center! Been to many a great gig there, totally miss it! And you are absolutely correct about Ben, his bassboard, and the song he played it on.
You're absolutely CORRECT GetReal. Ben could have easily done the song of course and maybe did at the occasional gig. But this has always been a Ric song, in the Shake It Up recording and in both the HBC and DtoD tours that I attended.
Fuckin awesome, what a gig this was.. Thanks for posting, I've found almost every song but this one..great baseline and such an underated band in the Uk in my opinion..
Not one of my favs from that album. I also preferred the sound from their older stuff.
I saw Greg once walking down the side walk and I followed him into a book store. I wasn't gonna say anything, but a soon as I went to the same book Isle, he got up and left. I had always hoped it wasn't cause of me. I wasn't going to bother him. It was just cool to be that near one of the members of my favorite band at the time. Ben was actually my fav. in the band anyway.
EE makes some pretty cool noises in this song! I am fast becoming a fan of his.. so often the keyboard-heavy sound of The Cars has made me overlook just how good Elliot (sp?) is. I like his style, too (hair/shades/clothing/carriage). He almost seems like he could have been in a slightly different version of The Ramones!
Thank you for posting this. It took me back 25 years. I was 16 and had this album on vinyl. I used to read and listen to the whole album. Funny how this can trigger memories. I was reading "The Quest for Fire." Thanks again for the memory.
Ric must've got sick of playing bar cords or the neck is wider on the Strat because the capo wasn't usedwhen he played his Gibson SG on the other tracks - Great cool song.
I respect Ben, despite all his talents, lending only back vocals, and that almost alberti bass line throughout the entire piece. I wonder how many times he repeated that sequence.
The Cars were awesome, in their own way, like the Beatles the Stones, Led Zeppelin,
no one sounded like the Cars but the Cars...

They need to re-record "Dream Away" like this because the original doesn't have the wider range of sound and bass like this one has.
This live version sounds better than the original one.
kd4adv 2 months ago
@kd4adv they should leave dream away alone cause Benjamin Orr isn't with us anymore.

When Ben fires up that bass near the beginning (not *at* the beginning) the song really kicks in. Such a fantastic and often overlooked song.
