Oh the way these songs take me back 40 plus years... Some people just have a voice that touches you, and Gary Puckett is one of those people for me. Could listen to these songs all night long...
@clarinetplayer56 He lives in Clearwater , Florida. Garys voice, sounds similar to the voice of the late Richard Harris. Richard Harris sang: "McCarthur's Park. I bet either artist could take each others songs, and sing them and you almost couldn't tell who was singing.
Anyone who's interested in hearing an entertaining and in-depth interview with my friend's uncle, Gary "Mutha" Withem of Gary Puckett & the Union Gap should come check it out on iTunes (keywords = Mutha Withem). Enjoy! :-)
I had a tape with this song on it. It also had Honey Hungry-great song. Gary voice was fantastic. My first memory of this group was Young Girl. Thanks for sharing this with us.
I listened to the Union Gap's greatest hit's on a 8-track back in '71, while driving my new Opel GT out to Ohio to visit my cousins. This song is still my favorite. I had a Craig Power-Play mounted on the transmission hump. Back then, that was as good as it got in your car. Awesome group, great music.
i also saw Gary live a couple of years ago, he tried singing country goat roper music, i was very disappointed. I grew up listening to this music in the late 50's and 60's. when i paid for my ticket i expected to hear him perform his hits and classics. I would go to see him again, but hope he would do his hits of the late 60's.
@alvastarr1 Gary Puckett was in my hometown two years ago , and then again at the State Fair in August, 1995. Met and shook his hand on both occasions. So neat to talk to a legend in rock n' roll.
@alvastarr1 Hi. You just sent this to me one minute ago. What show did Gary not do too well in? I remember Gary's music in the fall of 1969. Left an impression on me. I was only a lad of eight.
@alvastarr1 Oh I see, he didn't greet fans after his performance, and you were disappointed. I saw him twice and got to greet him twice. There were other rock stars whom I didn't get to greet that I saw in person; "The Association," "Classics Four" "Three Dog Night," "Paul Revere and the Raiders," "Wolfman Jack."
Yes, his songs brings back memories of yesteryears!
Man, do the lyrics of this song ever describe ME during my twenties. I only hope I've raised my daughter not to make the same mistakes I did, and to marry a great guy like my husband who looks just like ... Gary Puckett!
My twin brother saw his show a couple of years back, not expecting much, since it's a "girl's group," but he was blown away by how great they sounded!
There is none other like the voice of Gary Puckett. Gary and the Union Gap have been my favorites since they hit the scene in the 60s.
I listen to their music over and over. Sure would be nice if the real Union Gap and Gary would reunite for a few more songs together, at least once more for old time sake.
I saw Gary P. a number of years ago at a club here in Manhattan. Still had a decent voice. Too bad they don't write ( his kind of ) tunes for him to sing anymore.
I just came from his concert at the Sullivan Arena this evening. He signed C.Ds and acknowledged our veterans. Opening his show was the lovely, talented Juice Newton.
Remember Gary's songs had a theme of a tacky relationship that perhaps would be better refrained than getting involved. Great music and very controversial stuff for the time.
Hi. The first time I heard it was in late 1969, as a lad of eight, just entering the third grade. Also, "This Girl Is A Woman Now," seems to also be in the "racy" category. Used to hear it over the radio in September of 1969. Took me many decades to interpret the song, but it seems to speak of a girl losing her virginity, which is fine, as long as it's done in the context of marriage first.
I love the guys talent. Saw him in the 1990s at our State Fair. Brings back lots of 3rd grade memories.
I think you're quite right--Gary's lyrics do seem to be a bit provocative. If he had tried those songs 10 years earlier, 'ol J. Edgar himself would have condemned Gary to the Rock 'n Roll gallows!! Gary did do the music as tastefully and gently as he could get away with. Times changed---we had to change with them--as much as our roots in good ol' fashioned Rock 'n Roll would allow us.....GOD BLESS!!!
My first ever single i bought was Young Girl, what a fantastic voice, loved watching and listening to the songs on here. Thanks everyone who posted them
My nickname for decades now because I am called Gary is Pucket because of a guy in primary school who knew his music in the 60's.Considering we live in a small village in the Scottish highlands I love the fact I am called this for its obscure reference.
This was my favorite song by this group, but it was not as big a hit as some of their others. I have a CD by the Ventures that has a great instrumental version of this song.
All of Gary Puckett's songs were meaningful to my late husband and I as we were childhood sweethearts, and gosh, these bring back so many great memories, as I haven't quite gotten over his sudden death. Thank you for sharing these songs. Gary Puckett was a remarkable singer!
Where is "This Girl Is A Woman Now" That was "our Song". I married my husband in 1975, and was married to him for 27 years when he died suddenly in 2001. That was "Our Song", as I gave him my virginity, and yes, we married! We also pri=oduced 2 children from that union!
Hi, i was married in 1978 and my wife died suddenly in Oct 2001. Yes, Gary Puckett is still part of my life to remember her. we have 4 kids, beautiful 2 boys & 2 girls.
I saw these guys in college in '68 -awesome. I've seen him perform twice since-the voice isn't quite the same but the showmanship and connection with his audience is pure quality.
@jw66man I've seen Gary three times in concert. Yes, his voice isn't the same, and in my mind, I still think he should look like the 27-year-old he was, in the fall of 1969 when his songs peaked on the charts. Aging is hard for me to accept, even in my own body.

This is about teenagers then, and now. The words speak the truth of pear pressure
of trying to fit in with the in crowd. Great group ahead of it's time

One of the great voices of the 60's, right up there with Pat Upton, David Clayton Thomas and Mark Lindsay. Just a rich voice and always on pitch
