Great approach for these lathes! I'll order the Bison chuck (part # 7-862-0401) and the adaptor plate (Little Machine Shop #1692). As you mentioned, the adaptor plate needs turned down. I'll mark the lathe spindle and the adaptor plate with "indexing" marks, then attach the adaptor plate to the lathe spindle, so it is mounted to the lathe in the same position it will hold the chuck. I'll then turn down the hub on the adaptor plate to fit the chuck. This should minimize any runout. Thanks!
I didn't know that Bison had a 4" version. I will agree that these are very nice chucks. I have a the 5" Bison "Set-Tru" chuck with their D1-4 back-plate on a 12x36" lathe. Beautiful chucks. I like the "Set-Tru" as you can really dial them in. I have a video when I set mine up showing .0001" TIR. Bison only guarantees .0004" on that chuck so I am pretty happy.
Wonderful. I've been looking forward to this video. Thanks!
I've got an ER32 collet chuck with a 3MT mandrel. I can take very heavy cuts that would chatter if I was using the 3 jaw. Of course the big down side is I can't grip long stock.
Thanks MrAnimeGuru, just finished attaching my Bison to a backplate. The oven/freezer trick worked perfectly!

@MrAnimeGuru Great advice - I appreciate it. Agreed - 0.003" is unacceptable for collet work!

Any one know where to get these chucks in Europe?
Thanks

try putting your chuck key in a little hand drill, that could help cut down on the amount of wrenching you have to do.
