Great song about our obsession with the TV...Technically, most TV's around 1966-67 were encased in wood or metal, not plastic...Could Jefferson Airplane have retitled the song 'Wood Fantastic Lover' or 'Metal Fantastic Lover' (lol) since most TV cabinets of the 1960's were either wood or metal?
This was the theme song to my recovery over heroin addiction.
I cannot describe the hell involved with detox. But this song is the perfect way to describe the feeling when you start to see the light at the end of the tunnel; when you know it will soon be over. It's nearly every emotion combined into one unexplainable one.
The one thing I don't like about Grace Slick was her suggestion that all 60-something rockers are embarrassing (John-Paul Jones and Jimmy Page aren't, Dio wasn't and the rest of Sabbath/Heaven & Hell weren't either). Otherwise, what a girl, what a voice, and bloody good-looking too... even if she is nearly 52 years older than me LOL!
No offense but I most of those people were pretty embarrassing. Jimmy Page with his stupid double guitar and obsession with the occult nonsense. Look at the cover of Heaven and Hell's album. Sabbath have loads of stupid stories like how they would snort coke off the side of hot tubs when they were supposed to be in the studio. Plus, the TV programme The Osbournes. All you need to do is take one look at Ronnie James Dio.
Have you heard Starship? Slick can be embarrassing too.
@Fooliccini - Jimmy Page, embarrassing? OK, he got addicted to drugs, the occult is dangerous, his playing could be sloppy, but he could be brilliant. The double-neck Gibson was born of necessity: the first bit of Stairway calls for a 12-string guitar, the second bit (including the solo) a 6-stringer. He needed not to change guitars in the middle of a live performance. Yeah, Sabbath have stupid stories, so does every band. Yeah, that 'reality' show was/is(?) awful.
@Fooliccini - BTW, don't you DARE insult Dio. He had a fabulous voice, was a great songwriter and a complete gentleman to boot. No, I haven't heard Starship.
so cool, this is what you listne to when you take your harley out, your girl's arms tight around your hips, meet up with your friends and just go for a midnight drive
greatest song ever sung about a vibrator lol, her rattlin cough never shuts off nothin but a used machine, her aluminum finish slightly deminished, the best i ever have seen... Cosmetic baby, plugged into me never ever find another, n I suppose noone knows about my plastic fantastic lover!!
My mom just got a T-shirt that states, "I MAY BE OLD BUT I GOT TO SEE ALL THE COOL BANDS." And she did, The Beatles, The Doors, Hendrix, CCR, and Airplane along with many, many more.
@grickard319582010 I strongly agree. One must subscribe to Sirius or other satellite radio service to hear lost classics such as this great song. Thank goodness some YouTubers have the great sense to upload these lost classics.
@gorickard319582010 Idk I mean, some local radios in certain places are good like I live in Peterborough Ontario Canada and most of the radio is shit but Kruz on thursdays and fridays while Im at work we blair it and its all oldies like The Stones, Jefferson Airplane, The DOors, Steppenwolf, Neil Diamond, Jimi Hendrix etc. etc.
@KDaltonIrish . I lived through it as teenager and it was exciting, although I took it for granted. The music scene was literally exploding with the British invasion, Motown explosion, the Psychedelic and, anti-war movement, etc. Creativity was at its highest. I saw the Jefferson Airplane at this time and it was exhilerating.
They're really are no bands today to do this. What bands are there? Alice In Chains just released a great album, well, for the tracks I have listened to, but they aren't seeing any mainstream popularity.
How I wish ---any group today----could produce a sound as authentic--and original like this. Not happening---sorry, the music today is generic muzak. How lucky I am to have witnessed all this genius...the JA and many others. The groups today are like cold coffee and lukewarm pizza. JMHO.
@flyinstew im replying to you for two reasons. your right. and you use the term 'muzac' you just gained a thousand respect points from me =] peace love and happiness to yalls ♥♥♥
Those were the days man!!! I'm so sad I missed them, i'm just glad i've experienced the psychedelic music even though now all you hear is bullshit on the radio i'm only 21 and this brings back memories:) drivin on the back roads with bestfriends sparking up joint after joint just driving like there was no tommorow, and after this we popped in a little janis a little jimi and a little morrison! ahhhhhhhhh
typical Winterland ballroom show in SF late 60's was Airplane, Quicksilver, and the Dead. Sometimes Santana. The whole crowd on orange sunshine. Woah..........
Saw these guys a million times at Fillmore West. Or the greatest venue. The triple bills they had with the Dead and Quicksiver in the late 60's. Orange sunshine acid, and hours of incredible music. Winterland forever.
I am jealous of your generation. You were young in a better time, and by better I mean more alive, more vibrant, more AWAKE. You also had the best rock music. You can die happy.

@dutchdutch11 it's not about a vibrator, it's about the television. "her rattlin cough never shuts off"? its mocking people's love affair with TV.
