@Broeselfresser I think what you're trying to describe is the difference between a score and a soundtrack. Score is the music composed for the music, soundtrack are songs merely used in the movie. If you look on amazon there's a 'Original Motion Picture Score' for The Knight's Tale, subtitled 'Music composed and conducted by Carter Burwell' and then there's the soundtrack, often referred to as OST(Original Soundtrack). The OST says 'Music From The Motion Picture'.
