I never had a relationship with my dad and this song hits me hard when i listen to it. But it also makes me proud that everything i have learned and done was on my own (for the most part) and im making a promise to myself if i ever have a son that i will be there for him unlike my dad was for me. To the sons that had good relationships with their dads i envy all you
Listening to this song will hit you right were it hurts and really open your eyes to how much we need to teach and spend time with our kids, because next time we have the chance they may not be there. They grow up like you do they look up teach them well leave with your kid holding his head high and proud to say that was my father.
time goes too fast. i'm just 21, but not doing much the last few years, I see how much I'm seriously behind compared to my peers. Take action to do things now, or it will never happen.
the words alone bring tears to your eyes i have a five year old who i try to spend as much time with as possible this song made me hope i can live up to being a good father i already know im his hero by the way he emulates me all the time.. its just scary to think what if i fall short of making him proud to be my son.....
so sad and touching. still brings tears after a generation. to create that, what a genius. i will never be smart enough to decipher or understand his internal tortures, but he sure helped my life more than once when times got tough.
This song was the first media form to accurately show my relationship with my father. His new family and tough job take up too much time and time is too short in life. Everytime I hear this, it really hits home.
i study in another country and i was hearing this song when i saw a picture of my dad and me when i was little, i started to cry like for 1 hour or 2 , cu's i missed him soo much , you never know what you got until you lose it .
I feel like a odd one out cause I only see my dad for about 4 hours a day and only actually spend about 30mins with him every other day but me and him have the closest relationship than anybody in my family
Can't make it through this song without tearing up.
The real irony here is, Dad was the one always wanting to plan activities. But I was more interested in playing stupid video games and getting stoned with my stupid "friends". Now I'm a sophomore at university and trying to plan things with him on his busy schedule.
This makes me realize how much I love my dad... I subconsciously emulate him. I'm joining the military to be like my SEAL father.
@corporateCoffee As soon as I get my High School degree, Me and him are going to that recruiting center, and me and you both are gonna make them proud.
My parents were divorced when i was like 4 or 5. i got to see him every other weekend until about 3 or 4 years ago when he moved to Florida, now i only get to see him over the summer and talk to him over the phone up here in VT.
I love this song a lot. My dad showed me this song first. I can kind of relate to the boy in the song because my dad is in the Air Force so I don't get to see him much. Once a month...if I'm lucky:(
My mom showed me this song in hope I would talk to my father, I am 14 and didn't know my dad my whole life until about 2 years ago, but I pushed him away.
It hit me hard as a teenager thinking about me and my dad. Hits me hard looking into the den and seeing my son. Hope I have not made the same mistakes. I think I did ok.
I remember my dad was never around too much, and the times I did see him when I was little I tried to enjoy, but I always tried to say, "I want to be just like my dad when I grow up."
My parents divorced when I was 8, I went with my mom, and now I rarely see my dad.
Still, when I do see him I try to make it the best, and as I've gotten older I realized that the reason he and I grow further apart as the years go on, is that I'm becoming more like him than I think both of us wanted.
I want to cry every time I hear this song. Time passes by while we ignore the signs it gives us about the things we must change and by the time we see our mistakes we are old and life has passed us by.
Love this song... I have the feeling I'll play the shit out of it when my dad passes... Happens that my name is Josh and my dad worked a lot but was still always like my best friend :)
stay strong man.. stay strong.. idk if your a boy or girl, but just stay strong. its okay to cry. just dont do anything wreckless, dont let your fathers death be in vain. im sure your father taught you a lot of things, and youll be able to pass on what you learned from him to your kids and there kids.. stay strong and represent what your father made/raised with pride... but remmber its okay to cry. @70541nightslashes
I will remember all the emotions I got from this song the first time I heard it. It was amazing, I was about 10 and my music teacher sang it for us. My relationship with my Dad was well then, but for some reason this song got to me. Now, he is just like that Dad.
my teacher used to sing this to us when i was 8. i just found it yesterday. and started crying for the first time in a long time. lol i felt like a wuss. but whatever
@KachaksWova Weird. I'm only 15, and i still almost had the urge to cry thinking about how my dad feels when i don't want to spend time with him........
just after reading how this man died while listening to the end of the song, never felt so annoyed and saddened like this in a long time, don't know how i'm only finding out what happened to this genius now. it's sad. always the good die young..
one of the saddest songs i know. When i first listened to it it reminded me about how I wanted to be like my dad when i was a child, but by growing older I didn't like his way of living anymore and we became very different. But the I still have the memories of the time when i really admired him.
He said it scares him to death ! well I'm living the song now n boy it's hits me dam hard too. great song but boy can only listen to it now and again.
@JimmyB7678 It's up to 103 dislikes, I thinkt they're reproducing. Perhaps we should post a youtube video about safe sex?
This song is a timeless and absolute masterpiece. My only problem with it is that Harry Chapin died way too young, and never got to write songs that may have been better yet then this one.
irony is that i used to dance to this song with my dad in the garage and then this all happened just like the song. i'm almost 19 now and i'm trying desperately to change it because now he's the one asking me to come over and i have to say no for college :( i love you daddy
i love this song. i am currently 22. i was lucky my dad and i had a great relationship. i lost him to cancer when i was 17. this song always brings tears to my eyes.
@lylegardner247 maybe you did not have quantity but you had quality time. This song is about fathers who dont give their kids time... its so sad,.. when I was 17, I was learning english and I liked the song how it sounded it. Now i feel goosebumps in my throat when I listen to it...
It's a very old song and it used to be on the radio constantly. As he says in the beginning, "And frankly this song scares me to death." iow - It's a cautionary tale.

@ImAbandoningAllShips Not all men are that way, in fact most aren't. I'm sorry that your dad ran out on you but by saying that they all men are pathetic, you only reinforce the thought that it's ok to do that sort of thing because it becomes the accepted norm in their minds. As a male I do agree that men who that sort of thing are pathetic and should take responsibility for what they helped create.
@ImAbandoningAllShips LOL way to paint all men with one fell swipe of a brush. Get over your daddy issues already. Blame your mom for having unprotected sex at such a young age. She probably doesn't even know who the father is anyway.
@jchawks08 LOL you're pathetic. she knows exactly who my dad is and btw i was planned. so im not blaming her for anything.. i've talked to him once on the phone, and he sends me money here and there, but hes nothing to count on. but my point is dont go around saying my mom was a slut and doesnt even know who my dad is, you dont know her and you dont know me, so dont go around making assumptions. k thanks
@ImAbandoningAllShips Good solid decision to plan a child at age 17. They really thought that decision through, huh? But hey at least your here alive and well. Well you're alive anyway. Yay for that, right?
@ImAbandoningAllShips Your dad might have been a douche but I don't think you should hate all men for it. My niece's mom lied to my brother about being on birth control so she could become pregnant and force him to be with her. She might have been a bitch but I'm not going to judge all women based on her actions.
This song scares me. I am becoming a doctor in engineering and when my girlfriend and I get mairred we will have kids. I dont know what I will be doing how busy I will be during my career.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Having a father is overrated. Someone needs to make a version for the mothers who that gave their lives raising good for nothing trouble makers into respectful men.
It's ironic don't you think? For Harry Chapin to create such a heart-moving song about the father-son relationship, and for him to die in a tragic car accident and leave his boy Josh without a dad... Now there's a lesson we should all learn!
This song is about my son Jason. He went through so much without his dad. I almost lost him so many time's. He needed his dad. Today he has two little girl's, & he is the best daddy in the world! That son of a bitch doesn't know what he lost!
mom left, she'd call, say she'd visit.not come.alot.we made a game, we were actors.'mama's coming home' game to clean the house top to bottom, make food,'get ready'.good joke.laugh.cry solo.ditto xmas, bdays.she'd ask what we wanted.send zip, maybe not call.we started saying 'nothing'.military dad long shifts, back to back.he'd call, bring candy bars when away.he'd talk to 'mom' about her acts, take us 2 her.don't talk to her now really, she tries wish she'd stay gone.we used to listen to this song.
Growing up I as always in love with my Dad's music, so I grew up with songs like this, and one day he told me that if nothing else, he wanted to make sure we didn't end up like this, and looking back, I wish we had, because these two still talk. Now my dad can't stand the sight of me, and his wife likes it even less, so she feeds it.
Rip Harry. Unfortunatly Johnny Cash butchered it and then UglyKid Joe fucking murdered it. Some songs should be left alone. Just like the fuckin train wreck Mariah Carey did with Def Leppards Bringing on the Heartbreak.

"It's called Cat's in the Cradle. It's about my boy Jack, and frankly it scares me to death." I couldn't ever phrase anything better.

Having a father is overrated. Someone needs to make a version for the mothers who that gave their lives raising good for nothing trouble makers into respectful men.
batboyjhg 3 months ago
@batboyjhg Fathers can be just as important in raising a child as a mother can.

It's ironic don't you think? For Harry Chapin to create such a heart-moving song about the father-son relationship, and for him to die in a tragic car accident and leave his boy Josh without a dad... Now there's a lesson we should all learn!
Fantastic song Harry! We all thank you!

the 99 people cried to much during this song so they missed or intentionally pushed it since their father was an ass

This song is about my son Jason. He went through so much without his dad. I almost lost him so many time's. He needed his dad. Today he has two little girl's, & he is the best daddy in the world! That son of a bitch doesn't know what he lost!

Maybe the reason of dislikes are white stripes and bad video and audio sync?

Growing up I as always in love with my Dad's music, so I grew up with songs like this, and one day he told me that if nothing else, he wanted to make sure we didn't end up like this, and looking back, I wish we had, because these two still talk. Now my dad can't stand the sight of me, and his wife likes it even less, so she feeds it.

Rip Harry. Unfortunatly Johnny Cash butchered it and then UglyKid Joe fucking murdered it. Some songs should be left alone. Just like the fuckin train wreck Mariah Carey did with Def Leppards Bringing on the Heartbreak.

i first heard this song when played by ugly kid joe but the original is so much more emotional and almost brings a tear to your eye
