From contact to about the 2:07.25 mark, it looks to me like the BMW is going to spin to the outside. I would have committed to the inside too. Only after the car with the camera is committed to the inside does the BMW stop spinning and start to back sideways across the track from outside to in. The camera driver recognizes it reasonably quickly and tries to flick left to get around the outside. But because the BMW is broad side and almost stopped, there's not enough time/space to get there.
THE PEDAL IN THE MIDDLE! THE MIDDLE!!! ...........shit............ plenty of time to brake after the spin. this is not "pro" racing!!! some guys cant just up and rebuild in a year! this is ameture racing. id like to say he did the best he could to avoid it but think about the other guy you hit. ill be in sto 2013 and if all the wrecking keeps happening in 2012 as it did in 2010 and 2011 i think ill be taking my money somewhere ells. time attack maybe.. seems to be more responsible.
Fully agree on the red Viper.....the BMW was punted. Look...no aspersions here. As you've probably determined, I've spent a bit of time in the cockpit.....and know what it takes to be competitive at the runoffs.....and what a drag it its to have that effort end in the first few laps. My comments were principally directed at the "cone" driver. Having said that, when you have so little time to make a call...you gotta make the best call you can...which you did.
Well for gods sake....if you look at the video of the chap in the red car trailing the BMW.....the BMW got "punted". So much for the "moron, newbie spin" Stick with cone driving @codingparadox.
btw @codingparadox.........looks to me like short of driving around a few cones, you've not much seat time racing door to door at 170 mph. That would explain the naivety of your comments.
He didnt "roll" backwards.........which is why he stopped DEAD in the middle of the track. It was the momentum of his spin that put him there. The driver of the camera car guessed wrong.......which happens......and he quite possibly had target fixation. There is a shitload of room to the left at Canada with the new apron and worse case....ya gotta bail into the sand. BTW, how do you know that he spun in a "newbie" fashion? Ever spun - or been spun in a Championship race?
@learoast I am glad you could tell from the video that he was stopped, because he was not stopped dead. The car was still moving backwards towards the wall. Slow shots of the crash show the driver of the BMW was full throttle instead of both feet in. (which would have put him in a different spot on the track like MOST spins at that corner) Target Fixation- Your insane. The cause of the accident was the red viper pure and simple.
Whoever the car is that he t-boned should be responsible to pay for all damage to the camera driver's car. Anyone who doesn't have the presence of mind to put two feet in while spinning doesn't belong on a track, much less at runoffs, and should pay for any damage caused therein.
@codingparadox That's not how it works. Don't bring it to the track if you can't afford to pay for a crash yourself. Most racers I know even budget for a crash. This goes for renters too, if you are sitting in the grid with the car off and get hit by an errant comet you alone are responsible.
@robweenerpi I'm not saying he shouldn't be _able_ to afford it, I'm saying that the responsibility for that damage belongs to the moron who spun in an incredibly newbie fashion, and had no right having a racing license, much less being at Runoffs. Given that he was, he is responsible for that damage and should pay for it, and maybe next time he won't spin and then roll backwards like an idiot and fuck up a race.
