So either they never planned to leave their troops on helghan very long, or they simply don't care about their own troops health and looked at them as replaceble pawns fit only to be thrown away after they outlived their usefullness.
They don't need the masks on Helghan. But it's what we associate with the Helghast so why would they remove that element? It is the epitome of who they are.
That and the rule of cool takes over.
As for the ISA, It's the rule of heroes. Heroes don't wear masks. Heroes have to have their faces seen. Most things follow this rule strongly with few exception. And when the good guy does wear a helmet or face mask, they're almost always the red shirts.

It astounds me that there are people out there that support the people like Helghast and Zeon who are essentially Nazi expies. Let me point out that they got to where they were by treachery, manipulation, assassination, bribery and chicanery. They were funded by the ISA, the Helghan CORPORATION, but got greedy and decided to stiff the ISA and got punked for it. @dannyqueen Yea the intro does sucks in the third one. The campaign kinda sucks because it was poorly executed but it had the potential to become a great campaign. That's my opinion for the campaign and intro.

In Killzone 4 you should play as the helghast instead of the ISA in the campain. Tell the story from the helghast's point of view like in Killzone 1 and show that not all helghast are like nazis. Actually make the characters three dimensional, show that they have humanity and that they do evil actions because they think they're doing it for a good course instead just doing it to be evil. With their planet destroyed in a flash and civil war breaking out it make for a brilliant story.
This is my outlook...the Helghast found Vekta, built it, colonized it, then someone else came along and kicked them off the planet and exiled them to Helghan. That pissed them off I should imagine, as most of them died horribly, their children were sometimes born all fucked up and mutated or just died. After years they became very strong, very pissed off people with only one thing on their mind that they built their civilization around= Revenge against humanity.

@Mahbu Look at the History of Killzone, the Helghast have every right to be pissed off at the ISA and the UCN. The Helghast (actually the Helghan company) had Vekta, but the UCN was annoyed that they were doing better than the UCN was, so eventually they invaded Vekta and kicked the higs (the Helghan company) out... The Helghast had done nothing wrong, the UCN made what the Helghast are today.
Uh. Actually that's NOT how it happened. In fact, the Helghast orchestrated a takeover in which they assaulted ISA facilities but were unable to successfully destroy the ISA forces which tied up the Helghast while a hastily assembled USN fleet arrived and smashed the Helghan navy. I've gone over all this.
The entire motivation of the Helghast corporation was greed and the desire to maintain a monopoly rather than pay the required taxes to Earth. The irony here is that Vekta and Helghan were colonized on UCN grants. The Helghast basically took the UCN's money and then flipped them the bird so, really, I have no sympathy for the Helghast who then got put down (The Higs, as you call them, lost their entire navy while the UCN didn't lose a single ship).
Really once you think about it, the ISA were the evil ones at first, but their ways changed, and the Helghast became what they sought to escape, as opposed to separating themselves.
Definitely an interesting story, less about the events and more about the people. Although, KZ3 had an ending more anti-climactic than the first time I had sex.
KZ3 was amazing but i have to agree the end was so bad..... i expect so much more i expected twists, all the game was escaping from the end of KZ2 and then nuking the planet.

I never played the first kllzone games but what I noticed is Templar and Rico appear to be good buddies and when the helghast kill Templar later Rico mentally sort of snaps and pushes his hate for the helghast to new extremes idk just my theory

Damn this intro is so much better than the one in Kz3. It makes you think that, like Visari said, Alpha squad has no idea what awaits them. Their smiling faces as the ships set off. Then a massacre on Helghan. It puts so much into perspective.
Honestly I'd love to find out what happened to the rest of the guys from that first wave. They were all massacred but I bet they've got a story...

you all are stupid for saying the helghast are good.. this is taking the world war 1/2 story and putting it in a futuristic setting. pride started a war, (first extrasolar) then we took a lot of land from germany... in this case vetka. just like at the start of ww2, the dictator starts hate and racism toward the ISA. there are no good guys in this war. its basically a pissing contest. but but by all means.. helghast are just a fascist dictatorship

And is Vekta also colonized by the Helghast like Helgan? And what is the role if the people of Vekta (if theyre Helghast, i guess theyre also attacking Earth, but if theyre not Helghast, what IS their role?)??

@Mahbu Look at the History of Killzone, the Helghast have every right to be pissed off at the ISA and the UCN. The Helghast (actually the Helghan company) had Vekta, but the UCN was annoyed that they were doing better than the UCN was, so eventually they invaded Vekta and kicked the higs (the Helghan company) out... The Helghast had done nothing wrong, the UCN made what the Helghast are today.

Uh. Actually that's NOT how it happened. In fact, the Helghast orchestrated a takeover in which they assaulted ISA facilities but were unable to successfully destroy the ISA forces which tied up the Helghast while a hastily assembled USN fleet arrived and smashed the Helghan navy. I've gone over all this.

The entire motivation of the Helghast corporation was greed and the desire to maintain a monopoly rather than pay the required taxes to Earth. The irony here is that Vekta and Helghan were colonized on UCN grants. The Helghast basically took the UCN's money and then flipped them the bird so, really, I have no sympathy for the Helghast who then got put down (The Higs, as you call them, lost their entire navy while the UCN didn't lose a single ship).

Really once you think about it, the ISA were the evil ones at first, but their ways changed, and the Helghast became what they sought to escape, as opposed to separating themselves.
Definitely an interesting story, less about the events and more about the people. Although, KZ3 had an ending more anti-climactic than the first time I had sex.

I never played the first kllzone games but what I noticed is Templar and Rico appear to be good buddies and when the helghast kill Templar later Rico mentally sort of snaps and pushes his hate for the helghast to new extremes idk just my theory

Actually if you look at it the ISA is evil and the helghast are fighting for their planet they claimed ages ago before the ISA threatened them and forced them out of vetka which the helghast built and was driven to a planet of extreme conditions to survive
