The artificial intelligence involved is based around game theory (specifically, the prisoner's dilemma). A number of AI agents either co-operate of defect in relation to what Derek is playing on saxophone. This net of AI agents in turn determines a) one or more samples that are to be played back and b) the fragment of score that the string ensemble is to play.
So, what Luke H (the guy with the long hair in the middle front) is doing, is controlling certain parameters of this process as well as mixing the sample playback volume (across eight channels) in real time on the mixing desk.
you're pretty spot on Seb. I was able to both add in to the process through controlling the responses of one of the 8 agents in the net and then I mixed the 8 channels of samples they generated live. 3 of the agents both triggered samples and beamed score fragments via wireless to the string players in real-time.
Great stuff. It's good to see truly original music being performed in SA.

on the laptop i was manipulating and playing back only samples and snippets of us playing at a previous concert.
