Lanza was probably at the peak of his vocal powers during this film -- Too bad he couldn't get along with the studio heads -The voice is so fresh here --
Funny how our first sense is really what we see.... Edmund Purdom was so handsome.... But it was Lanza... who was really quite handsome himself... who made Purdome seem like a REAL Prince.... Illusion being what it is..
What a great movie. I'm trying to find a DVD on this, but I could not find it. I love this movie with Edmund Purdom & Ann Blyth. Edmund Purdom did a fantastic job lip-synched the great Mario Lanza. May your soul rest in peace Edmund Purdom. I love his movies.
Witch Ann Cappelletti, the sorceror of So. Philadelphia, 1/2 sister of Barbara Bush, witch daughters of Aleister Crowley, killed Mario's wife with a voodoo doll. No doubt she killed Mario because she wanted him and he didn't want her. I will post more when I learn it.
Thanks for uploading this video. Student Prince is my all time favorite movie. I love Ann Blyth & Edmund Purdom. Most of all, I love Mario Lanza's songs on this movie. I think Edmund Purdom did a great job lip-synching.
the reason Lanza was dropped from the film was that he had outgrown the costumes that were made for him. he always had a weight problem and it had gotten way out of hand. fortunately he had already recorded all the songs. great voice, but movies - unlike operas - wanted their leading men to look good too.
For those who love Mario Lanza's singing, he recorded at least two more operettas which are both great and also available on CD: "The Desert Song", also by Romberg, and "The Vagabond King" by Rudolf Friml...
When the movie came out, some musical purists were upset that they added three new songs by Brodzky --"Summertime IN Heidelberg", "Beloved", and "I'll Walk With God"--to the original Sigmund Romberg score, but I think these songs complemented Romberg's music, and the movie itself is one of the best love stories on film...especially at the end, when one finds that there are more important things in life than love--duty, for example.
What a shame that the magnificent performance of this song was the reason Mario fell out with the studios producer and hence never appeared in the film. They thought it was "too forceful". Total fools. The song is about his love for a woman and has to be put over exactly as he sung it. Thank god that his singing voice was still used.
You could not have said it more perfect - "Total fools." This is one of the most romantic songs ever sung on film. They must not have known a ladies heart very well. Mario did so that is why he sang it so perfectly.
There isn't one single time one stars listening to the first accords of this song without having chills down your spine, the same happens with Serenade of the same film. Anyone inattentive please do pay attention to the unsurmountable beauty of his tone of voice and the wondrous incredible amplitude of it. There cannot be a more beautiful singing voice in the world, it is not possible
Thanks dimare and of course you are right, his singing voice was and sill is the greatest ever and to add to this, his beautiful speaking voice, adorable face and most lovable character made him an irreplaceable human being
Absolutely lovely in every way. The Student Prince is one of those rare operettas where every song is a hit. Not a bad one in the bunch. They can all make you cry or laugh, as they intended. Mario's tremendous voice got away from him sometimes, but I don't think he ever turned in a bad performance. So cruel that he had to die so young. He has never been replaced by anyone. His voice was special and powerful.
I'm sorry to disagree with you maxi937. Mr. Lanza was not "too old" he was still a young man nor was he too overweight to play this role He was enchanting great tenor good actor had personality was photogenic had charisma All that irradiated from the screen in such a way that a few extra pounds would not matter whatsoever. With him it would have been sensational and a tremendous success more than it became but that was only due to his supreme voice Even if Mr.Purdom did in fact a very good job
Ditto! Just watched it and The Great Caruso again today. Need a fix of them every once in a while. Guess I needed a reason to have a cry today. I was 17 when he died, and I was devastated for months. I was nine years old when I heard his voice singing Be My Love.
Have watched The Student Prince many, many times, and from the very first time, it is so sad not to see Mario in the starring role, but for sure, no one could have sung the songs any where near the way he does in this movie. One of a kind, and another untimely death indeed.
I know the reason Mario did not play the role, and Edmund Purdom did a fantastic job, but it still was sad that Mario did not do the role himself next to Ann Blyth. It is just so sad that such a talent left us too soon.
The singing voice is so beautiful and so profound that it always touches your soul deeply There are not enough words to describe it Like Mr. Lanza's character said in GC referring to his singing that it made people happy, what he was actually referring to was his own real singing I am sure He knew the sensation it provoked on people and he was right it does transport us to some Heaven the minute we start listening to his voice, like in this incredily beautiful song
How could I have forgotten this most beautiful Beloved by Mario Lanza???? My daddy used to take me to the outdoor "Starlight Operettas" in Dallas, Texas every summer. (That is until a June bug flew down the throat of a soprano) Thank you for sharing this. Do you know of a musical possibly called Desert Song? I can not remember any of the songs from it. I believe it came out about the same time of Student Prince. Again, Thanks for the beautiful music and memories.
Desert Song is an operetta with songs such as "The Desert Song", "One Alone", "Riff Song", "One Kiss" "Romance", etc. The plot is a Scarlett Pimpernel/Zorro sort of thing. Great music and fun story!
Thank you Barry for your message in the mail about this song. As a matter of fact for me this love song is the most beautiful love song sung by the most powerful singing voice ever in history
Fantastic love song Wonderful video Mr. Lanza's beauty of voice is unsurpassable Mr. Purdom's singing interpretation is near perfection The absolute zenith of this lovely film would have been achieved had it been portrayed by charismatic Mr. Lanza No doubt whtsoever about it Congratulations for posting
I'm sorry, my one before the last post above what I meant to say was "... define either... or..." not "neither... nor" how could I have mistaken, this is the most beautiful love song Lanza recorded in his entire career and his voice is at its prime in these years
This film would be the perfect unforgettable masterpiece if Mario Lanza not only sang, but also would execute in it a leaging role, instead of Purdom. Lanza`s charm, smile, emotions would add to film even more force.
Ann Blyth had a voice absolutely beautiful is a shame she did not make more films with Lanza, thank you for this wonderful video. in this song his voice is insuperable
This is the song that caused Mario to walk off

Until I saw this film I had never accepted that sometimes love is just not enough.
Edmund Purdom did an admirable job in the role, but it was Lanza's incredibly emotive vocal performances which gave the film its potency.

From what I've heard, Mario had a disagreement with the producers.
