I went to a club where they had dancers, there was a really beautiful girl dancing to this music. She had such beautiful eyes and they were the eyes of danger. Sometimes she could be so nice and other times very moody. One time she told me she had slashed the tires on her ex-boyfriend's car.
Lovely complex reggae-clockwork sound, well done. Their band was named after the "Payola" scandal in the 1950's America, where music producers bribed radio jockeys to give songs more play.
1982. Sophomore year of high school. Killer tune. What a great time to come of age. No internet, no smart phones, no iPods. Just cassettes and great music. I feel sorry for the youngsters today.
I used to listen to this song on a small orange plastic radio, made in Japan, under my pillow late at night on a Canadian AM radio station called CFUN XD :)
Great song to dance to back in 1983/1984. Heard this song for the first on the college radio station WPBX at Southampton College, NY...when it rocked the Hampton New Wave/Punk scene.
Bob Rock was in this band, as one of its guitarists.
This song won a Juno award for the single of the year in 1983, and probably deservedly so, as this song is a classic that is catchy, and well played on the airwaves.
As thadamajayo said in one of his posts, this song does have a "The Police" flavour to it, although this song is quite a ways more "dark", sort of "bleaker", more "distant" than is most any song that was by The Police.
I saw this video in 1983 just a few times, but the song has remained in my head all these years. I want to add it to my iPod library, but they don't sell it through that site! I wonder why?

I'd never heard this song in my life till about 5 years ago... and it, despite being so plain in its nature as to how I came across this song, never strayed from my mind. Easily one of the best songs EVER conceived by man. I would love to see someone try and tackle a cover to this song. 21st century! HOP TO IT!
I woke up with the lyric of this song on my head this morning. I don't know why, it has been 30 years or so since first time I heard it, it has bring good memories since high school. When I used to have a huge crush in a green eyes girl. I must of have listen over and over again. YOu got the eyes of the strangarrrrrrrrrrrrrr :)
I remember the tv show Sweating Bullets and it really SUCKED! The ponytail guy couln't act to save his life - terrible acting ane terrible scripts - and the only reason I remember the show at all is because it had Carolyn Dunn in it who was from my hometown of Sydney N.S.!
No it was heard in the 4th season Vice ep titled "Badge of Dishonor" (circa 1988.) I think the actress who portrayed Selena's mgr (& eventual murderer) in the 1997 movie "Selena" (starring J-Lo & Miami Vice's Edward James Olmos) guest appeared in that ep. Don't remember her name.
I don;t think there is any homage too The Police.I remember seeing The Police in Toronto in 1979 but I don't think they hit the airwaves until about '83.This song came out about '81.Although the sing Paul Hyde is British born but came too Canada in his early life.(BC I believe) and from there The Payolas were born. One of the first to receive a Platinum Record for sales.I've not heard this song in 20 years.Still as good today as when I first heard it.
bucky468,you are making me think here.I do remember seeing The Police in Toronto in 1979.The Payolas soon after.Thinking about songs like "Walking On The Moon" and "Eyes Of A Stranger" but I still don't think there is a Homage,More 2 different groups playing thier own music.
