The real problem was the engineers were smoking this massive bong. The air passages in the bong got clogged up. That's a lot of gungi smoke you're seeing there!
Blown head/head gasket/turbine seal etc..... either way, a seal failed allowing oil to get into the combustion chambers... if it was bad enough it would just run out of oil and shutdown, no sweat.
@memadmax69 if it runs out of oil it doesnt just shut down, no sweat, the motor is probally gonna sieze. Odds are, it had a mechanical engine failure and something caused that engine to run away burning its own oil in place of diesel fuel. I would think if it was able to shut down, they would of shut it down already...
Did the locomotive survive the fire? You could see it for miles it seems. Your town looks nice btw. I like the stills leading up to the video and you could see how bad it was.
Probably a blown oil seal on the compressor side of the turbocharger. This allows the engine to inhale and burn huge quantities of engine oil.Just an educated guess.
@re49991 What experience do you have to make a comment like that? You dont have a clue about what you are saying. Idiots like you make me want to stay away from rail fans and enjoy the hobby by myself! Now go talk about some damn Leslie horn or something else that you think you are an expert at!
Did this go into a run away state. turbo diesel motors like to go into a runaway state when their own lube goes into the combustion chamber due to a blown oil seal or screwed up turbo. unless the setup doesnt allow that to take place.
For those of you who think that GEs are the only locomotives that blow turbocharger gaskets, watch this and shut up with your useless faomer bashing of locomotives. Here: youtube(dot)com/ THEN ADD: watch?v=ZOdJ2gd4hOQ and there you have it. An EMD doing the ssame thing that is seen here. Now, leave GE alone.
@nsrailfann4life91 Thank you, NS, for explaining. Did train crew know this was happening?
Besto shut locomotive down, or keep going? How long will the lubricant last before running out? (A little oil on a hot surface can generate a LOT of smoke.)
@robertgift It is best to shut down the locomotive of course. The lube oil will last until the all of it drains out and burns off. There is still going to be the extreme smoke and risk of fire even after the engine is cut off due to the heat, like you stated. Hope I answered your questions.
@nsrailfann4life91 do you know how many videos on here are of GE's and you bring up one video of an emd come on ... its just the nature of ge's not our fault NS is comprised their fleet of ge's lol.
@zachthemanism Do you know how many malfunctions are not caught on film? Exactly. Its not about EMD vs GE. They both make the best locomotives but there are always little trolss that have something bad to say all the time. If GE sucks, why are they outselling EMD and why is that most of the Class 1 railroads heavily rely on them? EMD is good too, but the bashing and foaming needs to end because it's pointlless. I have facts while others have their opinions. Thats trhe bottom line.
@nsrailfann4life91 GE is like Ford they sell so many because they are cheap. Cheap sells. RR dont look at the whole picture the decisions come from a a/c board room with a bunch of big wigs in suits that know nothing about logevity and durability as a mechanic that knows from experience would they see a bottom line as dollars and cents.
@zachthemanism GE is cheap, but. they also produce more power than EMD. The more power you have, the more wear and taer you are going to have and yes, reliability can and will sometimes be an issue. EMD is like Aston Martin, they build luxurious type locomotives with less power but more features. GE is like Chevy, its not made to be fancy, but to gte the job done, take a beating, and keep on delivering. Both valid points from both ends. Lets just leave it at they are both great.
@nsrailfann4life91 alright lets go to school you can run with NS and since the only line that runs up here in ohio where im at i gotta go CSX and well run both and come back with the pros & cons LOL
@zachthemanism I will give EMD the self-steering trucks. They make for a much better ride, but if you hit spaghetti rail with those trucks, that is going to be one bumpy ride lol. Thats the only drawback the self- steering trucks have. Well that and the fact that EMD uses 1 inverter per truck while GE uses 1 inverter per axle meaning that a GE can lose 2 traction motors on the same truck and still have power to that truck, EMD cant and the truck will lose all power and it will seize up.
@nsrailfann4life91 <chevy? Take a beating? What fucking planet are you from where chevy = good truck? Why do you think all ambulances and tow trucks and police cars and basically any service vehicle that will be abused as hell are all FORDS not chevys? dumbass...
@gnockergnutz Why dont you mature up and act like an adult and stop calling me a dumbass. It's called an analogy. An analogy isnt always true, but is used to make a point. Also, I am a volunteer firefighter, so I know about alot of ambulances and brush trucks. Our old Chevy brush truck has a 454 in it and is the only brush truck in the county that has never been stuck. @gnockergnutz I don't know where you've been, but my 1997 Chevy truck with 272,000 miles on it has never needed any work done on it. All I have done is change the oil and do normal service work. I will admit Chevy has built some POS vehicles, but every builder even your precious Ford has built some shitty vehicles at some point. If you properly service something it will always last longer, but things can and will happen to anything mechanical from time to time no matter who built it.
@gnockergnutz is that why a few years back when ford put there new powerstrokes in there meat wagon chassis and the engines all blew why ford almost lost there ass in lawsuits for loss of life... and why police didnt like the crown vic hmmm exploding car or non exploding car. and as far as the tow truck aspect i drove one worked on one and hate ford for it the transmissions in the 450 SD chasiss are junk nothing more than a automotive 5 speed in a Medium duty truck and the best cop car
@zachthemanism <Powerstroke is an International-Harvester/Navistar brand name NOT a Ford product. Ford did not put their own engine in those ambulances you speak of, it was a Navistar engine that failed.
@gnockergnutz cause they are cheap! Alot of local municipalities have got wise and went to GM or Dodge. Ford is a joke.Im a Public works mechanic, and the crown vics lack quality. Rear axles are made out of soft steel, bearings chew right threw them. Fuel pumps drop like flies(put good bosch ones and no problem). Thank god all of our meat wagons are internationals, ford power chokes where problematic (basic engine was ok, just all the crap around it). Engage brain before mouth!
@blkdout03z71 Hmm soft axels in crown vics , how about soft bearings in explorer diferentials ,Ive seen a rash of those, lots of problems with the power stroke and not to fond of the modular V8 either horor stories there to esp with #5 cylinder piston seizeing in the bore & pulling the conecting rod into usualy trashing to whole engine..Their modular 4.0 V6 is a nightmare , no changenig a timeing chain in a vehicle it's on the flywheel side of the crankshaft ,wonder who's better idea that was..
could someone tell me where ide find videos of run away locomotive engines? and not in the manner where they are speedng down the tracks.. but like well.. the engine running away on its self. i once found a video on here of such a thing. but cant seem to find it again to save my own life
@Gunsnclapton4 naw.. not that kind of run away.. what im getting at it like the engine running on its crank case oil.. hence a runaway diesel like youde see a smaller pickup or cars engine doing .. i found one on here once but cannot find it again
@1Flyboy00 Depending on the nature of the mechanical problem, it may not be possible to shut off that engine. If it's a blown turbo, then usually only two things will stop it. Either the oil it's probably now running off of runs out (leaking through the turbo), or it self destructs.
@relztem3 WHy cant people just watch the video and not bash GE. GE is outselling EMD. They are both great locomotive builders and I myself love the EMD 16-645E3. HOWEVER, this is simply a blown turbocharger gasket. I have seen an EMD do the same exact thing. These gaskets blow all the time which makes the lube oil leak and makes a great smoke show.
@777worldliner Diesels dont have "Ignition" as such.. you mean then the engine is shit down. - IE the fuel rack or injectors are shut off. and yes a Diesel can run on only oil, or any fuel just about provided it has air as well it will keep going.
@aussietraindriver i know diesels dont have a ignition system you dont have to repeat and give me a lecture on how a diesel engine is shut off i know how they work
When will you in America ever learn? ELECTRIFY!!! that is way to go! Our trains in Japan are 95% electrified and only 5% diesel. You are about just other way around! Electrification is expensive granted! BUT! IT IS FAR CHEAPER IN LONG RUN! PLEASE force your government to demand railway electrification in your country! No such thing as a runaway ELECTRIC locomotive! Electrification is: ENVIRONMENTAL FRIENDLY!
@electricrailwaygod I agree with you that we need more electrfied locomotives... But here in America we have a lot steeper slopes than you guys probably have over in Japan. Not bashing you or anything but diesel gives a bit more power for steep hills.
@electricrailwaygod With the railroad's stretching well over 100,000 miles it is impossible and too costly to electrify and will not cost less in the long run, It was tried in the past with the milwaukee road railroad and it was not cost effective. Japan's railway's are shorter in mileage and electrifying is much easier and more cost effective. Plain and simple, it will not work over here.
@electricrailwaygod japan also has about 100,000 miles less trackage, and therefore makes electrification possable and cost efective. we over here canada and america, have a combined trackage amount (personal estimate, too lazy to google it) 233,000 miles of tracks in the US! maby more! and in canada CP's 14000 plus CN's 20400! maby more! i think u gotta do some math, statistics, and brain reconstruction, then you might understand how stupid what u just said is!
@electricrailwaygod japan also has about 190,000 miles less trackage, and therefore makes electrification possable and cost efective. we over here canada and america, have a combined trackage amount (personal estimate, too lazy to google it) 233,000 miles of tracks in the US! maby more! and in canada CP's 14000 plus CN's 20400! maby more! i think u gotta do some math, statistics, and brain reconstruction, then you might understand how stupid what u just said is!
Ha-ha-ha..!!! This kind of smoke is normal for russian and chineese trains. I´ve even seen it myself in southern Thailand. I regret I didnt catch on video. That was a sight.
Happened to my car when doing 80mph - that was pretty scary and I wish I'd known what was happening. I pulled over and watched as my beloved motor ran itself to death. To see it happening to a 4400hp loco must be terrifying. Imagine if the train was heading the other way and thecrew were in the cab unable to stop the engine until all the engine oil was used up.
@mbsmike1 it is an oil leak on the turbo, the loco is a General Electric D9-40CW 4,400bhp loco. i watched one of those smoke stacks on a D9 ignite and shoot flames damn near 40 feet. the turbos get destroyed because of crankcase overpressure and cause the oil to leak.
shit, turbo fail much? Either that, or the prime mover absolutely failed. If it were black smoke, it would be diesel fuel burning, so there must be oil being dumped onto something, causing the white/blue smoke.
Of all my years railfaning I never saw anything that sweet. The best I ever saw was a journal box burning up, which sparked small fires for a few miles. That was before they had put hot box detectors along this line
Wow! talk about "Turbo Caugh " looks like a bearing in turbo was eating itself like hard core. Got to love them GE's they will run till they pretty much eat their engines to shreds. Also comment on the last two post's, GE's also have a low-air mixture indicator in the cab now days. So you would hear an alarm way before the low-oil or engine temp warning alarms. It also depends on the Railroad cause GE does not default equip their locos with the low air-fuel mixture alarm.
@11MURDOCH Sorry mate I believe that's the other way around, although there is nothing wrong, It's just a GE being a GE. Ge's are worthless pieces of shit.
WOW!!! NS doesn't need any more steam specials they got one right here!!! Lololol!!! Nice catch and do you know the story behind those abandoned track?
@4202EJW that track is not abbandonded it is used as a set out siding for defective cars, putting mantinence equipment on it, and, sometimes car storage, maybe to prevvent runaways because winston salem district is some of the most tough operating territory on NS, i railfan this line.
VERY true, & very common on YouTube, even though viewers are constantly asking uploaders to show the event without adding a crappy song that ruins the entire clip. Half of this one was just riding in the car anyway, sometimes filming the dashboard.
looks like he done gone and blown a turbo! lol

hahaha the seal in the turbo is gone so the engine runs on itis own oil even when the ignition is off
777worldliner 1 year ago
@777worldliner A diesel engine doesn't have an "ignition" system
speedypete99 1 year ago 2
@speedypete99 I know that im just using that as an example
777worldliner 1 year ago
@777worldliner Diesels dont have "Ignition" as such.. you mean then the engine is shit down. - IE the fuel rack or injectors are shut off. and yes a Diesel can run on only oil, or any fuel just about provided it has air as well it will keep going.
aussietraindriver 1 year ago
@aussietraindriver i know diesels dont have a ignition system you dont have to repeat and give me a lecture on how a diesel engine is shut off i know how they work

When will you in America ever learn? ELECTRIFY!!! that is way to go! Our trains in Japan are 95% electrified and only 5% diesel. You are about just other way around! Electrification is expensive granted! BUT! IT IS FAR CHEAPER IN LONG RUN! PLEASE force your government to demand railway electrification in your country! No such thing as a runaway ELECTRIC locomotive! Electrification is: ENVIRONMENTAL FRIENDLY!
electricrailwaygod 1 year ago
@electricrailwaygod I agree with you that we need more electrfied locomotives... But here in America we have a lot steeper slopes than you guys probably have over in Japan. Not bashing you or anything but diesel gives a bit more power for steep hills.
CityFolk120 1 year ago
@electricrailwaygod With the railroad's stretching well over 100,000 miles it is impossible and too costly to electrify and will not cost less in the long run, It was tried in the past with the milwaukee road railroad and it was not cost effective. Japan's railway's are shorter in mileage and electrifying is much easier and more cost effective. Plain and simple, it will not work over here.
CSXtrackworker 1 year ago 2
@electricrailwaygod japan also has about 100,000 miles less trackage, and therefore makes electrification possable and cost efective. we over here canada and america, have a combined trackage amount (personal estimate, too lazy to google it) 233,000 miles of tracks in the US! maby more! and in canada CP's 14000 plus CN's 20400! maby more! i think u gotta do some math, statistics, and brain reconstruction, then you might understand how stupid what u just said is!

@electricrailwaygod Hey buddy, when you can move 1 ton of freight 436 miles on a gallons of fuel let me know okay?
Japan electrified because you wanted to. We in the U.S. dont want to, we like our big thundering monsters.

Ingramdumpkiss 1 year ago
@mbsmike1 it is an oil leak on the turbo, the loco is a General Electric D9-40CW 4,400bhp loco. i watched one of those smoke stacks on a D9 ignite and shoot flames damn near 40 feet. the turbos get destroyed because of crankcase overpressure and cause the oil to leak.

25Chevyguy 1 year ago
shit, turbo fail much? Either that, or the prime mover absolutely failed. If it were black smoke, it would be diesel fuel burning, so there must be oil being dumped onto something, causing the white/blue smoke.

Of all my years railfaning I never saw anything that sweet. The best I ever saw was a journal box burning up, which sparked small fires for a few miles. That was before they had put hot box detectors along this line

DJGENEX71 1 year ago
Wow! talk about "Turbo Caugh " looks like a bearing in turbo was eating itself like hard core. Got to love them GE's they will run till they pretty much eat their engines to shreds. Also comment on the last two post's, GE's also have a low-air mixture indicator in the cab now days. So you would hear an alarm way before the low-oil or engine temp warning alarms. It also depends on the Railroad cause GE does not default equip their locos with the low air-fuel mixture alarm.
phildoethedildoe 1 year ago
There's no problem with this locomotive ... it's just pretending to be an ALCO! lol!

WOW!!! NS doesn't need any more steam specials they got one right here!!! Lololol!!! Nice catch and do you know the story behind those abandoned track?
4202EJW 1 year ago
@4202EJW that track is not abbandonded it is used as a set out siding for defective cars, putting mantinence equipment on it, and, sometimes car storage, maybe to prevvent runaways because winston salem district is some of the most tough operating territory on NS, i railfan this line.

@shnimmuc said, "horrible music".
VERY true, & very common on YouTube, even though viewers are constantly asking uploaders to show the event without adding a crappy song that ruins the entire clip. Half of this one was just riding in the car anyway, sometimes filming the dashboard.
