Gary Oldman is the most underrated actor of the last 20 years. And yes, 'La mer' is one of the best songs ever written. Such a denouement and such a brilliant contrast with story to end with this tune.
@RhodesidesReviews I'll say!!! I'm a crazy fan of the 70s miniseries and was a bit doubtful about the new film adaptation but it really won me over...And now the song always makes me think about Jim Prideaux, and Ian Bannen and Mark Strong who played him both so well. Lovely, lovely boys as Connie would say :)
Yup ending of TTSS was superb : brilliant choice. Also another thumb up for "please make The Honourable School Boy". Just please dont have the same actor playing him .. Jerry Westerby is NOT a curly headed scouser.....
haha nah definitely wasn't that. i work at a cinema you see, and i just went in to hear the ending, and have heard it many times over the last few weeks, its gotten stuck in my head!
We salute you Mr. Smiley...saw film for second time last night and couldn't get this song out of my head...wonderful denouement to a classic film...thank you for uploading this
Yes,Yes, Yes. Brilliant ending to a brilliant film. Never thought that anyone could equal Alec Guiness as George Smiley. Saw it again today. Please, please someone upload the party scene with this wonderful music that to me sums up the film
@jonnycomelatelyable I predict that final sequence of TTSS will be placed in iconic/classic moment " movie lists" in the not too distant future....one of the best movie sequences I've ever seen....won't be the same on dvd as it's a real big screen film...also loved the visual re creation of the 70's- not just the griity cold war London and communist block city scapes but even all the little indoor domestic details like tasteless 70's wall paper and kitchen cleaning products from the 70's
this so makes that end montage of TTSS it makes the film about love purely because of the lyrics of beyond the sea but in the oiginal dialect love it made the film about relationships instead of just spies perfect!
im not entirel certain that i would have liked TTSS had it not been for this song. the final scene with this tune in it is just absolutely incredible. especially the part where smiley's car turns in to a rocket and blows up the secret volcano base. i cannot get enough of this version.
If somebody told me, before I saw Tinker, Taylor, that this song was in it. I would have thought "That won't work" but i would have been sooooo wrong, it's an awesome montage, up there with Layla in Goodfellas.
If somebody told me, before I saw Tinker, Taylor, that this song was in it. I would have thought "That won't work" but i would have been sooooo wrong, it's an awesome montage, up there with Layla in Goodfellas.
George Smiley brought me here too. I've always loved the Charles Trenet original (and to a slightly lesser extent the Bobby Darin version) but I was never aware of this disco-esque version. Now since watching the film I haven't stopped playing it!
Superb posting, Aupair. I watched TTSS the other night and as the loose ends were tied together during the end sequence, I thought ‘La Mer’ was the perfect and entirely appropriate backdrop. The lives of these men were intense, dark and unsettling but also, like Julio Iglesias records, slightly absurd. It was a wonderful and beautifully shot film. Did anyone else find the moment when Mark Strong, hesitated before shooting Colin Firth—quite literally—through the tears, incredibly moving?
Incidentally, uploader, this is not 'the French version of Beyond the Sea'. Beyond the Sea is the French version of La Mer. La Mer was written in 1943 by Charles Trenet, but Jack Lawrence didn't write the English lyrics of Beyond the Sea until 1946.
@lexo30 Apologies. I guess what I meant is that the version that most of the English speaking community would be familiar with is the Bobby Darin version - "Beyond the sea".
I thought it had the most surreal appearance in TSSS! Such a dark film and then this upbeat masterpiece during the closing sequence. It shouldn't have worked, but it fit in perfectly.
@aupairfamilydotcom Sorry if I misunderstood you. Yes, its appearance in TSSS was strange but absolutely right. I'm just old enough (I was born in 1970) to remember how the 1970s were very strange, in that the society seemed full of turmoil - hijacking, terrorism, industrial action, famine, guerrilla warfare - but popular music seemed (to me as a kid) relentlessly trivial and upbeat. In a way, that's why punk happened, but looking back, we can hear the yearning in this song.
agreed @aupairfamilydotcom. just the right amount of triumphalism at the end of the movie. particularly meaningful when Smiley and Guillam pass each other in the circus and exchange a wordless glance. Really loved the moment when [SPOILER ALERT??] Smiley takes his seat as the new Control. His double palm-down 'ok, let's get down to business' gesture was perfectly choreographed to final beat of the song.
@Fin12 I agree. Never even came close to liking Julio Iglesias before, but this song works so great at the end of that movie. I can't find it to buy anywhere, or as a download. Surely it ought to be somewhere...
@aupairfamilydotcom Yes, a lovely tune, by Cole Porter as it happens, and there are versions of it that I prefer to Senor Iglesias'. I'm not biased against Iglesias as such, it's just that there are a million version of Begin the Beguine and his is only one of many.
