  • you misspelled separate....

  • best "music video" EVER.

  • Annnnnddddd....... Nightmares

  • Creepiest thing I've ever heard in my entire life.

  • Wow, this gave me chills.

  • scary!

  • Great video. The song changed my life completely. I thought it was about the woman locked inside my head, hoping to be released one day. The day she was released, I was released. Turned out I was her all the time. Thank you, Tom Waits, for letting me be myself again

  • This song is about Edward Mordake. He supposedly had an extra face on the back of his head, which could neither eat nor speak, although it could laugh and cry. Edward begged doctors to have his "demon head" removed, because, supposedly, it whispered satanist language to him at night, but no doctor would attempt it. He committed suicide at the age of 23.

Such a beautiful song for such a sad tale.

  • suicide soundtrack

  • awesome!!

  • poor Edward :/ ...

  • For some reason this helps me to complete drama homework.. :/

  • true history and good video (:

  • loved it. great work. as someone who is familiar with this style of film making, i know how it can be. keep up the good work

  • Great work!

  • This is very creepy I like this! *-* This song is nice

  • Voldemort! O.o

  • Good job here man! Excelent

  • The Best!

  • thanks for the nightmare.

  • THIS IS BASED ON A REAL THING!

  • This is pretty cool. Tom Waits and stop motion are pretty much the best things in the universe so together it's like amazingness. I just wish you hadn't gone with using title cards (I can't think of their name right now 'cause I have the dumb) for every line. It's kind of jarring when there's half a second of action followed by another card. :\ But I digress. Awesome song, awesome vidya.

  • Wow. Just... Wow :) I thought the story of edward was interesting. So I youtubed it for more information, and got this. This was amazing ^.^

  • i brought myself here.

  • imgur brought me here!

  • This can't get any weirder.......

  • this is fuckin creepy

  • @Tarantellamusic or possibly not ...?

  • Even listening to Tom after more than 18 years, he is still amazing in everything he does.

  • I loved Tom Waits way before 9gag told the tale of Edwardm but I appreciate that 9gag is awesome enough to bring so much people to hear Waits amazing music :D

  • Just so you guys know, this is based on an actual person named Edward Mordrake. He had a face on the back of his head that he wanted removed but no doctor would agree to the task. He claimed the face to be a demon and that it would whisper horrible things to him at night. He ended his own life at age 23. You can find more about him through a google search.

Thumbs up so more people can see this.

  • @slooshywarbles i feel so sorry for him :(

    now i know the truth.thanks

  • @slooshywarbles cough cough 9GAG cough

  • @slooshywarbles

I always reckoned he was using the Mordrake thing as a metaphor for heroin.

  • @slooshywarbles Who gives a fuck?

  • @Tarantellamusic Your four year old daughter? This song gives me the heeby jeebies yet I can't stop listening.

  • this is one of the saddest thing i have evert heard.

  • this song is amazing.

  • wow listening to this give me goosebumps

  • thumb up if 9gag brings you here!

  • @dikasatiro I saw it and looked him up and then saw this

  • @dikasatiro screw 9gag, redit FTW!!!!

  • @Tarantellamusic She's gonna turn out cool as hell!

  • Goodjob...

    I'd give you a B+

  • this song's about a real guy named Edward Mordrake.

  • ktoś jeszcze z demotywatorów??

  • it's a great song but.. oh, i won't fall asleep tonight!

  • @Tarantellamusic If you think this is content fit for a 4 year old, I'd say you're doing something wrong. Trying to screw her up good and early, are you?

  • i love this song!

  • Reddit made me come here

  • @DavidJonathan3000

    me too....

  • So who came here from imgur?

  • Fucking. Creepy.

  • I'd just bang the back of my head into a wall all day. That'd show that stupid face.

  • based on true events. Wikipedia: Edward_Mordrake

  • @pornpudd You blow.

  • Anyone who doesnt like Tom Waits should be decapitated

  • if anyone doesn't know, this song is about a real guy who lived (years ago) called Edward Mordrake who committed suicide at the age of 23

  • this shit is so fucking scary ;n;

  • Brilliant video.....hilarious!

  • Beautiful music, beautiful lyrics.. But somehow it makes me sad. Maybe it's the way it should be.

  • @Tarantellamusic you are a phenominal parent!

  • Thank you : I love Tom Waits

  • Comment removed

  • Good one. Thanks for not overdoing the stop-action and thus diminishing the power of your poignant, lingering shots.

  • man, this is like drunken tim burton with only a fistfull of clay and cardboard box

  • Any real proof that the story of Edward Mordrake is true?

  • @herbertkearse I know your comment is old, but it is likely that the story of Edward Mordrake is based on truth. There is a Chinese man named Chang Tzu Ping who had a second face, he got it removed by surgeons, and the whole thing was documented. Chang's second face had some teeth, a tongue, a scalp and other parts that resembled facial features. The face was able to move, but not on it's own. The story of Edward is possibly true, just embellished over time.

  • @Vaeyethe Someone's been reading Reddit.

  • HOW COULD YOU SAY THAT'S FUNNY?!?!?!?!?! IT'S A TRUE STORY HIS NAME WAS EDWARD MORDRAKE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LOOK IT UP!

  • That violin solo is one of the saddest things I have ever heard.

  • I think we are - happy people - should pray God for such as Edward Mordrake. Beautiful song

    (Google translate)

  • 24 people didnt know her too well, and got dragged of to hell

  • Poor Edward Mordake.

  • Voldemort ftw

  • Cool tune and that's a great bit of work on the video, I'm sure Mr Waits would approve.

  • my classmate got nightmares of this. hehe . it wasnt even scary .. its FUNNEH

  • was the second face bella?

  • I like some discussion about the following: I'm listening a lot to this song. And I have a feeling it's about homosexual feelings in a time or place when it still was a major taboe. "Whispering things heard only in hell.", A women's face in the back of his head. To remove it, would kill him, suicide, etc. It's also told from the perspective of someone sympathising with Edward but who also has a strong religious moral. This is the best interpretation I can come up with.

  • @Salafi4u I think it's more about a man that can't get over a women. The fact that its a young girl or a women shows this how time has passed yet he still thinks of her. It being on the back of his head is a metaphor for how it is always on his mind. The part about whispering things heard only in hell shows how at night he would contemplate suicide. When he speaks of taking him to hell, like Dante's inferno the cause of his present misfortune stays with him in the afterlife. Thats my take on it.

  • @comeonloser, @Salafi4u:

No, it's about Edward Mordrake, a guy with a face on the back of his head. This isn't English Class, not everything has a hidden meaning.

  • @TempusCorvus thanks for telling me I've got some reading to do, thanks. Although Waits could have used this real story as an example for a bigger picture, and my take wouldn't be far from the theme of many of his songs.

  • @comeonloser

    @TempusCorvus

Unbelievable... one of the few songs of Waits which is actually completely literal.

Looked up a picture of this Edward guy. Seems very nasty. It could actually smile, but not eat or speak...

  • @comeonloser I did like your theory, though... But it didn't convinced me more then my own first interpretation.

  • @Salafi4u Well, you're interpretation is still wrong. Homosexuality could perhaps be a theme, but I highly doubt it. This is about Edward Mordake, a noble Englishman with a parasitic face at the back of his head. It possesed malignant intelligence and would sneer and smirk when he wept over his condition.

  • PoorEdward just saved my life... It made me think... Tom u kill me ...

  • Awesome video my friend! This and "Song of Joy" by Nick Cave have got to be the two most genuinely creepy songs ever written

  • that was deep.

  • Fuck, i didn't know this was based on a true story. Look it up, his name was edward mordrake. They got pictures and everything, and supposedly the female face kept whispering shit to him at night, and that drove him to suicide at 23 years of age. Sad story.

  • @katkal3 A conjoined twin would be the same gender though. It's probably only referred to as female because women were still demonized back then.

  • nieeeee heee heeeeee .... chce mi się wyć ;/

  • this is awesome

  • Absolutely fantastic. Perfect feel to the movie, sad and sweet, just like the song. Poor Edward.

  • Wow. Like that Lucas. Nice one.

  • Outstanding video. Brilliant work, for sure!

  • This is AAAAWESOME

  • Sheer briliance - lmao

  • one of my favourite songs, and you made a brilliant video for it. Bravo.

  • Did you hear the news about Edwaaaaaaaaaaaaaaard? XD <3 Tom Waits

  • It has to suck to be stuck in the back of another person's head, having no control of any of you own limbs at all! No wonder she went evil... T_T Poor Edward & sis...

  • HE MISSED THE FIREBALL FLOWER!!!

  • DOOMED!

  • Heavy Metal is loud, but it can not creep 3 old children out. Tom Waits can, even if the child does not understand.

A really good video to one of the creepiest song I know.

  • I have to say this video is horrible, meaning: it is so good, drastic - I mean, what happens to Edward is horrible... very sad. You made suffering palpable. wow, great video!

  • nice song...sad but very interesting

  • Nice work, Lucas.

  • Czasem mam wrażenie jakby pan Waits pisywał niektóre piosenki o mnie, niestety tylko te smutne.

  • Amazing video. Epic lyric too.

  • Mágico.

  • T_T very good

  • wow..poor edward indeed

  • POOR EDWARD ;(

  • mr Mordrake

  • you spelled separate wrong. sweet video though .

  • amazing video.. keep it up :D

  • so creepy

  • really nice work, well done, fits the song perfectly.

  • Aweeeesoooome

  • mad genious... unbelievably on the mark. simply outstanding

  • Definitely a song not to play after you've downed 20 or so shots of Beam - I can attest to that!

But overall, it's a brilliant song - the whole album is brilliant, in particular "Kommeneschupadt" (or whoever the hell you spell it!)

  • Oh this is the most haunting story song, and the vaudvillian text frames are more than adequate. Love the claymation; I have always felt claymation glorifies photography best.

  • This is a fantastic video, one thing to the other commentators, though. It's an old myth. It wouldn't be physically possible to have a normal head with 2 functioning faces on it. It's an old story, yes, based on conjoined twins, but Edward Modake/Mordrake is not real.

  • @Archibles But you do realise that it's not a real face on the back of his head, right? It's merely a physical representation of saying he had a mental illness.

At least that is how I view the song when broken down and analysed.

  • @gribae The song is based on the myth of Edward Mordake/Mordrake who was not a real person. I was explaining to someone who thought that the person was real.

  • @Archibles Fair enough. But there's still so much about it to reach any self-conclusion.

  • lol am I the only one who's first thought was how much it would suck to try to sleep with the other face on the back of your head smashed into a pillow and the nose pushed against it?

  • @Mara2Wild hahaha, interesting thought indeed!

  • @Mara2Wild lol, no you're not, but i'm glad you said it first, lol

  • @Mara2Wild Haha I thought the same, when I saw the scene with it :D

  • @Mara2Wild id just sleep sidewayz

  • @Mara2Wild you obviously don't don't understand tom waits for what he is really saying in most of his stuff... i bett the only reason you even listen to it is because its almost like a "trend" amoungst your group to listen to weird or "messed up shit"

  • @luridoptics Wow, you just make an assumption based on a comment? Okay, to be fair, I'll make an assumption about you. You're kind of judgmental, and very very disrespectful.

  • @Mara2Wild i sleep while my face is smashed into the pillow

  • i thought exactly the same! hehehehehehehehehe

  • @Mara2Wild

It's the only way to try to keep it quiet!! ;)

  • @Mara2Wild Two différent faces but the same lungs...

  • @Mara2Wild she didnt have a nose :p

  • @Mara2Wild Surely that would have smothered said face, ending Poor Edward's misery?

  • @Mara2Wild

    I have thought about this.

you have to sleep with your head on the side, or buy a massage table, wich has got a hole in the middle. :D

  • it´s absolutely amazing .... Epic song!

  • Really enjoyed this being a huge TW fan.

The dying flower and maggoty bread was actually quite moving.

    Thanks

  • i have never seen such art made from play-doh

  • The video is simply brilliant! Congratulations!

  • nice clay-mation.

  • _____Hells yeah, this is Stephen King-Silent Hill stuff. Tom Waits' tunes are all full of downtrodden dudes in the rotting remains of a world that has moved on, freaked-out mutants (Poor Edward), subterranean creatures (Heigh Ho) and vehicles piloted along gory landscapes (Everything You Can Think of is True). One can almost imagine seeing these tunes through a thinny. If they ever make a DARK TOWER movie...

  • good video but the audio is damaged

  • This song is killing me..

  • great and beautiful video

  • Absolutely great!!!! Thanks....

  • i get the feeling the meaning behind this song may be addiction. Tom Waits was a notorious drinker and maybe the face was the dependance. either way, this song is incredible and the video certainly does it justice. simple, just like the song itself but very powerful. i think a lot of artists like john mayer or dave matthews that seem to put everything they have into their performance have taken a big page out of Tom's book, although i doubt they have the same sincerity as he.

  • @savageknives1 That's a very possible double meaning, but did you know that there is a person that this actually based on? His name was Edward Mordake or Mordrake... if you google his name, you can see photographs of him... It's a very sad story

  • i love it. you really captured the feeling of the song :)

  • The violin solo at the end always gets to me. ;(

  • but she was not devil

  • I'm the poor edward and my ex girl is my twin who can not removed from me

  • Poor Edward.. I can watch this a million times and not get tired of it.

  • The other face, the person that holds your dreams and aspirations, that holds who you want to be.

That face is not forgiving when you fail to hold up to your promise.

  • Comment removed

  • This is great! Strange and haunting, like the song...sort of funny, in a bizarre sort of way. Great job!

  • your all a bunch of emo's :)

  • The most hillarious video i've ever seen. Made me cry...

  • @ALOHA2323 -Hilarious? Cry?

I think your emotional receptors must be broken

  • @pretorious700 i just simply love this song

  • @ALOHA2323 me too

  • Amazing Job !

  • Great job! You really caught the atmosphere of the song into your work. Congratulations!!!

  • Incredible work, very well done, and was it just more or has the video and the song that matter have a very Burton-esque feel to it?

  • yeahhhh scary as fuck, i like it...props

  • I had a jackoff screaming names at me so I wrote a poem for him. Inspiration came from Tom Waits song. Poor Earle Do you still wet the bed Is your willy unwilling and small? No? Then at least have some sympathy for earle because he suffers from all of the above its true one can tell he suffers a living hell oh poor earle
  • Made me cry. Did not understand the text first, but with this movie and the lyrics the song is even more beautiful.

  • incrediblos. schizophrenical!
