i'd like for one of you knee-jerk dumbasses declaring this aircrew "heroes" to explain what's heroic about flying a plane with fire retardant. they were killed by a fucked up airplane and unnecessary flight at the margin for that configuration. victims? sure. heroes? pull your head out of your ass. wonder if most people commenting on YouTube think for even a second before trotting out their collectivist cliches in full-bore sanctimony.

i thing we sould have respect for the people who died in that accident change the tittle if thay died thay died saying one of us if thay were not helping us thay would of not had died how about if u were dead because u tryed to save thousands of people we would also be respectful
that doesnt even look real, i mean, i know it is real, but seems like were so used to seeing this shit in movies that its surreal to see it in real life, kinda like the wtc. RIP
this was sad because the guys flying this vehicle were supposed to be some of the very best in the force, but with politicians not providing adequate finances for fighting fires, i am surprised this doesnt happen often, please! get these guys better vessels they are literally out the dying to protect our very interests.
This clearly shows that manoeuvring speed (Va) after losing weight (dumping water) is LIMITED !
Too many people, even aviators, think it's the other way around. Thanks for sharing this and R.I.P to those who have perished. Let's take lessons from this !!!
Backtrack, the cause of this accident was not the pilots or the crews fault. Undiscovered metal fatigue was found by the NTSB to be the reason for the separation of the wings. Perhaps you should take a lesson from this... get your facts right please and do not shift the blame onto the aircrew.
Did I put the full blame on the pilots ? This subject is even being given in pilot-training, ONLY to illustrate the effect of weight versus manouveringspeed. Spoken about facts, note that the wing separates after the ' weight' has gone, that fact remains, regardless of the found metalfatigue. (the contributing factor in this very sad case)
I been in side one of that brand airplane several years ago its pretty cool back when they were stationed in wenatchee WA in the summer with other retardent bombs
Plane didn't 'explode' in midair; It was a very, very early C-130, one of the first made. Note lack of typical droop-nose. Military uses them extensively & firebombers use them more so. The planes encounter High-G pullouts during bombing with load. This plane suffered main spar failure which folded wings rearward. Many other C-130 firebombers were discovered to have fatigue cracks on the spars. They either need newer Herkys (C-130s) or just newer aircraft to do the job.
The spar is the main structural member of the wing. The wing's ribs attach to it, and the sheetmetal skin attaches to the ribs. The wing spar supports nearly the entire weight of the airplane during flight.
I knew one of the pilots. He was my best friend's dad. Its hard seeing this but i do every year on his birthday. R.I.P.

The blast separated the wings? Doesn't take an engineer to see that's not what went down.

NTSB Report: LAX02GA201
Date: June 17, 2002
Registration: N130HP
Cause: Cracks caused by metal fatigue not found due to inadequate inspection program for plane use.

What are spars? Something in the wing structure?
