  • @annonimuz2 The Phantom of the Opera was created as a novel.

  • @jobloe3393 I know

  • I just watched this, and I love it ♥

  • I had NO idea that Branagh made a movie of the Magic Flute in English... here is the trailer with French subtitles! Woohoooooo!

  • Oh my god...what a rubbish

  • @dontevergas sorry, you do sound crass AND ignorant

  • agree!!!!!!

  • C'est magnifique!

  • why the hell isn't this movie available in the U.S.?

  • I join this comment!

  • I can't believe something is big was made. Nice, I wanna see it!!!

  • cool :D

  • Watching it right now. Great!!!

  • they shuld made more opera films

  • I am dying to see this film. My brother (who doesn't care much for the arts) loves The Magic Flute and is just as eagered. I hope it will be available in the US some time soon.

  • whats the song where it goes pa pa pa pa pa pa pa

  • It's the papageno/papagena (names of the characters) duet from Act II of the opera.

  • i thought it was called papa o.o

  • my favourite part is at :45

  • what is that part called?

  • it´s the famous aria of the queen of the night called "Der Hölle Rache kocht in meinem Herzen". you should find tons of videos of this on youtube!

  • Stage vs Movie

    Which is better?

  • seeing as each stage performance is different, you really can´t compare. in general i feel opera is meant to be a stage performance, so in doubt i´d always go for the live performance - but this movie is very, very good, utterly charming and dramatic.

  • pa-pa-pa, pa pa pa pa, pa pa pa pa, pa pa pa pa

pa-pa-pa, pa pa pa pa, pa pa pa pa pa pa pa papageno....=)

  • yes,

I bought it on DVD and its freakin AWESOME

the music is the best adaptation I've ever heared!

  • So dude where did you buy the DVD? Because it looks awesome

  • Actually, I saw it standing at the front of a rack somewhere in a departmentstore. I wasn't looking for it, did not know it existed. But I know the opera by heart, and I was intrigued by the cover. I saw who directed it, and who translated it from German to English, so I thought, what the hell, at least I'll have a few new coasters.

But the movie is a jewel for the eyes and ears.

You'll probably will find it online, I do not know if there is a Region1 version out there.

  • Does anyone know when this movie came out?

  • came out in 2006

  • why cant i see the video

someone smart please help me Jv

  • I wanna know that to, it's from the Durex gel commercial. What's the name of the song at 45 seconds?!

  • queen of the night aria

  • Thanks a lot ^_^

  • What's the name of the song that comes on at 45 seconds?

  • Der Hölle Rache kocht in meinem Herzen

The vengeance of hell cooks in my heart.

  • "cooks" ?! ^^

  • Pretty sure that's accurate enough. Would you prefer "burns"?

  • omg, this is hilarious! ill have to show my music teacher. it's like the magic fute and across the universe combined!!!! =P

  • This video is sort of funny : )

  • Sounds musical and beatiful too.

Mozart must to be proud again, he, he.

Makes me remember to the film Nanny Mc Pee, I don´t know exactly why, maybe for the high magic, hehe.

    Watch my videos.

  • i have to watch this movie!

  • If the three women were dressed in red (I think that was anopther production) they would be handmaids from Margaret Atwoods novel: The Handmaids Tale-a very scary thought. But other than that, it seems very good.

  • de zober fluta! my friend was singing this in the car on our way to watch the house bunny and after listening to jonas brothers she started singing this and i was cracking up!!!

  • Does someone know what's the name of the first part sang in this trailer? The one beginning with "po po po po"? Thanx

  • Comment removed

  • is this a french movie? when is coming out? i love Mozart's magic flute.

  • plus que magnifique. papageno papageno <3 hi!hi! ^^

  • i saw this movie once, i first thougt what the hell is this but later i realy loved it how they sing is amezing and that just one person can creat this, i never knew that it was of mozart and the pice was called magic flute

  • yeah, Mozart was very talented. I admire him both as a composer and an artist, he`was creative talented and knew the potential of music! Did you know on the night that the Magic Flute was first shown, Mozart had forgotten to write the overture (thats the bit at the beginning where its just music and no singing)so he had to write it half an hour before the show started! Its amazing that the lovely peice of music at the beginning was written so quickly!

  • yeah!! and just al of the music was already in his mind it only need to be writed..and they said that mozart had a verry beautiful hand writing even when he was a hurry you can't tel that he written a whole pice in just 2 or 3 minuts just to chek a guy who copy his work

  • Ya salio esta pelicula en paris? O apenas este Diciembre

  • Musically, this seems to be a fine production; I don't even think it's too horrible that they translated it (even though I'm positive they could have done a better job in some parts); my problem is that the director clearly gets so carried away with the cinematic elements that he stifles the singers' performances. Also, some songs show that the director didn't bother to research their context and therefore missed out on dramatic opportunities (like the laughter in the Queen's first aria).

  • Interesting comment, I see where your coming from, particulary about the context of the music and how it could of been used more effectivly. I think its obvious the director isnt a big fan of opera, he interprets how music is used in opera differently. I think he sees it as something to show emotion and story, rather then something that also interprets character and personality

  • This movie is not so bad! I really love the music!

  • The music is very powerful, it definatly stands out over every thing else! The magic of music, it can heighten and really make a difference to any experience :D

  • You bunch of gentlemen should see Ingmar Bergman's Magic Flute (Trollflöjten).

  • I've heard very good things, I would like to see it. Its more 'faithful' to the original, right? :)

  • I really like that adaptation too.

  • omg what is that music called...in the beginning of the trailer...when they went; "pa...pa..pa...papapa"

    something like that...

  • Its called exactly that! :D 'papapa'...or, I think thats what its called. If you want to find it on youtube, type in 'papageno and papagena' and it will come up with the song =3

  • Superb: Modern technology, Mozart and Branagh.

The production is as exuberant and dynamic as the trailer, and my wife downloaded it from a sharing site for free. I know computers are trying to take over the world by driving us all mad, but it's worth it for this sort of deal.

  • he he I agree :) I saw the DVD in HMV the other day, so if you want a better version its out now (finally!!) :)

  • So where would you buy this video. Because it looks awesome.

  • I don't have time to explain completly, but if you look on the other comments on this video, I have told every one who asked the same question where they can get a copy of the DVD from! :)

  • that website is useless

  • lol you mean the official website? Yeah, its more of a game then something thats helpful! 0_0

  • It's being released in the UK on the 31st March. Don't know if thats any help to you at all? If not the same principal applies, you'd need to region hack your dvd player.

  • cool, I didnt know this! =D I know it had a limited cinema release last year, it was a shame my loca;l cinema didnt show it :( Thanks for the info! I already have the french DVD, but I'll have to tell other people to get the english one :)

  • the visuals look amazing in this film, Kenneth Branagh directed didnt he?

  • yes he did! And the whole film is visually fantastic, its very colourful and over exaggerated-- as such, despite being set in a world war 1 style setting, it still feels like a fantasy because everything is stylised/over exaggerated :)

  • nice, I'll probably get the DVD, Branagh: just one great British directors, makes me proud. :)

  • Slayer - Why doth ye have such a cruel username?

  • I dont remember this being publicised in the UK, thank god for youtube.

  • where can i find this movie? ive looked literally EVERYWHERE! i cant find it anywhere and i am dieing to see it!

  • First you need to spell "dying" correctly. Then maybe you can for this movie under its correct spelling.

  • Maybe you should offer actual advice, rather than criticism. Especially since you left out a verb after 'can'. What are you, German? In English we use a verb after 'can'.

  • Usually one places a verb after "can but I'd guess in this case that iesosa omitted it on the grounds that one might assume the verb is "spell correctly". I do agree with you on your suggestion to offer real advice though...

  • I hope you don't think this is an advert, but you can download the whole movie on mediaportal (dot) ir. It doesn't take that long actually if you use megaupload to download the rar files. (You do have to do a free register process).

  • Die Zauberflote is the best thing that I've ever heard.

  • OH. MY. GOSH.

They NEED to release this in the US sometime soon!!! This looks INCREDIBLE!!! "Die Zauberflote" is one of my favorite operas of all time (probably second only to "Don Giovanni"), and I adore Kenneth Branagh and more or less everything he's ever directed/been in (his interpretations are always so interesting). So I am SO EXCITED!!!

And, ajkl27, I so agree - thank goodness they got good singers! (If they'd gotten a bad Queen of the Night, I would have been furious...)

  • As I've told everyone else, I dont think they are releasing it in the US. Heck, its a british film but they dont actually plan on releasing it here! 0_o But, you can do what I did and order the DVD from the french amazon website! Its a awesome DVD, it comes with the soundtrack on a seperate CD and a little booklet that has the script and making of/interveiw stuff :)

  • How do you get it to play on your DVD player?

  • Since I live in England my DVD player is the same region as the French DVD...but if you live in America or a non-europian country, you will have to hack your DVD player and make it all region so it can play the french DVD. Its pretty easy though, I did it to mine so I could play american DVDs! All you do is google 'dvd hack all region' along with the name/make of your DVD player, and you will find on the internet a code that you put in with your DVD remote. It sounds weird but works perfectly!

  • Thank you!

    DebD

  • P.S.

I am SO glad they actually got good singers for this

  • OMG!!!!

This is my favorite opera in the whole entire world!!!!!

Is it going to be released in the US and if so WHEN?!?!?!

  • It's not an opera but an operette :)

  • OK...I just want to know when I can see it

  • no- it is an opera. though it is sometimes referred to as a singspiel if that's what you mean

  • It's a Singspiel - singing and talking.

  • I don't think its getting a release in the US (which sucks!!) But you can do what I did and buy the DVD from the french amazon website :) Its a really nice DVD too, it comes with the soundtrack and a little booklet that has the script and making of/interveiw stuff :)

  • Hah i blow out the candle in the beginning woo!

  • wow! Your a dancer in this film? Thats great! =D Have you been in anything else? Have you been a dancer in any theater productions? =3

  • where can I see this movie?

    is it on youtube?;))

  • Grr classical masterpiece being mind for pop culture tripe! We must not have it down-graded to one of the best languages that has produced the most and best literature in the world! Such a shame when something is downgraded for the masses.

  • Why should anything be made appealing or marketed to those low-balling scum? There's no way I would want them to take an interest in opera and begin to delve deeper after getting a taste of this -- I wouldn't want my shtick being popular. I might have own up and do something creative myself.

  • lol youre not being serious here, are you? XD

I mean, the magic flute was originally made to be an opera 'downgraded for the masses' when it was decided to be written in german and played in a public theater!

  • I am kidding. I was replying to other comments posted here, Sorry my sarcasm wasn't flagrantly ridiculous enough to be taken for the joke it was. I should have gone more over the top like Gulliver. I and you know that's why it was invented. What can I say. I'm a low-balling sub-grade mass myself. ;)

  • lol I see, sorry for giving you lots of hassle! I was wondering wether you were really being serious or not, its really hard to tell if someones being sarcastic or not on the internet! 0_o

  • Theorah, I apologize. I thought I was so over the top it couldn;t be taken seriously, but after a few months on youtube I;ve personally seen some people who write over the top things that are serious. I think that's I was being a bit bitter. As an American right now, I was just trying to find some humor after watching some of the presidential debates. I should realize that there are cultural differences as well.

  • And what on earth is going to happen if people dont make other cultures appealing and marketed to 'low balling scum' The reason England is full of binge drinking idiots is because they dont know what else to do, they havnt been able to have a taste of things like theater/opera/art, and probably because people like you are insulting them!

  • Well, as I said above I am making fun of the attitude of gibraltarrr down below. After all, Shakes himself was written and re-written for pubdwellers. And though the Bard hath no opera, many hath he inspired. THanks for telling us how it is in England. I keep telling the kids (and myself) it's not exactly Harry Potter.

  • I see I need to start making Video responses. Now you can see I'm worse than you thought -- I'm gasp -- an evil American! Can't claim ignorance or lack of education, though. Keep your spirits blazing in this cold season, theorah, I bet we'd get on famously if we ever met.

  • I can see people have lost their abiltiy to detect a load of sarcasm. I mean, if you think I'm serious how did that old Brittish humor ever succeed. Alas, I guess

I'm no Twain or Swift but heck it should be obvious that was pretty over the top. It should be a clue when I said "We must not have it down-graded to one of the best languages that has produced the most and best literature in the world." I was showing up the literati. Or in this case operati.

  • Really, wearing the heart on the sleeve is one thing but read what I say, or you're just as bad as the people who really do have that opinion and are ignorant and start flame wars.

  • Thank you for posting this clip, it has been a pleasure to watch, and a pleasure to post comments with you. My hat off to you.

  • again, I'm sorry I had a go at you, honestly, you wouldnt beleive some of the REAL idiots that really do type stuff like your joke for real! =/

I have seen many arguments start out because someone was being sarcastic but everyone thought they were being serious!!

  • its one of the bog problems with talking over the internet! ;D

  • You're right. It's wise to use manners and let people get to know you before making jokes. I was just on the receieving end of this the other day. I think proper youtube etiquette should be something like inviting people over to your house to watch your favorite movies. And certainly if you'd just met me I would wait beofre trying to be witty and -- failing! ;)

  • I would believe it. I was watching a Wonder Woman video and soemone put me down as a mother for allowing my daughter to watch WW vids assuming I knew nothing about her original creator's taste for bondage and it turned out this person was very sick and twisted. I'd never really met a troll like that before who actually came after me personally. Cyberstalky. Creepy.

  • I even changed my screen name.

  • I know, the internet harbors some really nasty people, doesnt it? They tend to get away with it also, because they are not talking to someone face to face. Don't worry or apologize though, I also learnt after your previous comments that I should ask/look into a situation more before I open my big mouth!

  • Hello, this is theorah's sister,

sarcasm is all very well and good! I'd like to point out though that sarcasm (in my experience) is usually used to be harsh/cruel in the first place!

like theorah said, it's just the internet :) without tone of voice it's hard to tell if you are being serious or not.

to be honest...sarcasm (again, in my experience) is always pretty subtle humor..; being used over the top it doesn't work *laugh* so maybe you just didn't pull it off. ;)

  • ew it's in english...and it's not even taking place in the enchanted land of the original opera. :/

  • i agree, german with subtitles wuld have been better

  • When did this video come out? My IB Music teacher would love this new interpretation of this video

  • Its out on DVD in france now, not sure if its out anywhere else though! ^^;

  • visually stunning

    savannahsmoon

  • Very interesting! Thank you for sharing this.

  • I am also DYING to see it, but it is not coming any time soon to the US. I read on IMDB that it has a Christmas or Jan 08 release date in the UK. France and Japan got it first. I guess they figure that we're the only two US weirdos who want to see an opera on film! I just watch the clips over and over and hope they add the US to the list some day!

    : ) Christine

  • I just couldnt wait for the film to come out, so I've bought the DVD from the french amazon website! you might have to hack/decode your DVD player to watch it, but I'm really glad I bought it..I watched the DVD the other day and it was fantastic! If/when it comes out in the cinema, I will definatly go see it! ^_^

  • CAn anyone tell me where i can buy this online , ive been looking for it for ages and no luck so far , please respond if you know anything

  • Why English! Sounds good in English, but thats because its similar to German

  • English is not close to German. It's 70% latin based and only 30% German related. An opera should only be performed in the original language. Maybe you should study it...

  • Umm, actually, if you study languages, English is classified as a Germanic language. Sure, there's alot of Latin in it (coming from a Latin student), but there's also a grand relation between English words and German words. o0

  • And this is the elder sister posting on her younger sister's account, lol.

  • Actually, you've got that the wrong way around.

  • Well, that depends, if it also sounds good in english then why not?? why shouldn't it be translated??? ii usually dislike it too when they do some thing to the original version, but it doesn't sound bad!!!

  • i cant speak german, and i want to see it in english, its not a crime to translate, there are so few less german speakers its stupid to argue for it to be banned from transation

  • but the soul of this is in music, not in word!

  • Need you forget that it is an opera!

  • when does it come to the us????

  • I've got to check this out, though I must admit that opera in english just doesn't seem...I don't know...right?

  • it's so cool! cinema release in germany is january 3rd 2008. looking forward to it!!!!

  • Ugh, English. What wouldn't I give to see this film, though!

  • I would love it, if they dubbed it in German...oh wait, they should have done that from the start...

  • Exactley my feelings! WHEN IS IT IN THE US!?!?!?!?!

  • When is it coming to America?!?!?! Are there clips available?

  • I just saw this movie. It was FANTASTIC!!! Very Felliniesque. Before it was even finished I knew I wanted to see it again. It is a joy from beginning to end.

  • where did you see tghis? I really want to watch it, it looks so quirky and fantastic, Ive been waitibng to see it for months!

  • when is it going to be available in the US????

  • Stephen Fry wrote the libretto for this

  • I was hoping it would have a more magical surreal atmosphere to it, not something as plain as this. :(

  • Lol like a bunch of other people here I'm desperately waiting for them to release it in the US. I emailed the website about a month ago and they said that they were still negotiating--it was a very humorless letter, sounded kind of like they'd gotten that question fifty times or so already. :-) I googled it to try and find out, but while several websites list when it's being released in places like Canada and Japan, nothing abotu the US. :-(

  • it has been announced that it is opening in Britain at christmas time distributed by Revolver. lets hope that means it is on its way to you. i love this opera and this film looks stunning

  • I as a German would surely prefer it in original language... but I do understand why they filmed it in English, it's a big production and lots of people shall be able to follow the story without any disturbing subtitles or something...

Although the fact that this opera wasn't shown in German in "Amadeus" was quite annoying to me, I mean, it took only a few seconds, they could have...argh, you know what I mean.

But this was a great idea for I adore Kenneth Branagh and I love Mozart to death.

  • And about the movie Amadeus, and them singing english, I saw that movie dubbed in German!

That is even more silly, because they all talk German there, but the singing is in the """original""" english of the movie. I laughed like hell when I heared that.

  • I guess they left it in English because it would have been much too difficult to *god, where's my bloody dictionary?!* well, to make it look as if the actors were singing in German while they originally aren't.

I mean, it's singing and not speaking, do you know what I'm trying to say?

I still think that it was quite a bad idea,I'm so proud Mozart spoke my language... and then they sang it in English. *ärger*

  • Yes, you are right. Still for opera singers it is not uncommon to sing languages they don´t understand... Don´t ask me how they do it! lol.

If they would want it in German, they could get a german (or austrian) cast. But they chose english, to reach a bigger audience. I am not complaining, whatever the language they sing, I know the story by heart. :)

  • I just hope they will not cut out songs in order to make the movie shorter.

  • Thanks! My friend is in this, and I hope to get to see it on the big screen here in the US...

  • Do you know if it will be coming to the US? I want to see it! That's really cool that your friend is in it.

  • I don't know and don't even think he knows! I'll comment here if I ever find out, though... :-)

  • Ok, thanks. :)

  • go to google and type in la flute enchantee and click on the first link watch the trailer and the trailer is in english!!

  • im completely obsessed with the Magic Flute right now...i saw the opera yesterday and loooved it. The "Queen of the Night" in the movie is crappy tho :(

  • Have they released it in the US? *fingers crossed*

  • Isn't it originally in German?

  • yes, the original was in german! Stephen Fry wrote an English version so that the film could attract people who might of never watched an opera before....alot of opera fans seem to be against this, but its just the same as how Mozart wanted the original to be in German rather then Italian so that more people could enjoy the opera! ^_^

  • I think I would watch it in German first to get the feel of it.

  • I can't speak a word of German...but it's much better the original version than this one in english.

Great movie...but I would have prefered the German version. Anyway...it's great..."the magic flute" is one of my favourite operas...I love both...Mozart and Branagh!

  • I speak alot better english then German, but hearing this in english is for me harder to understand since I am used to the German lines. It even took me a few lines to even notice what language it was haha.

  • Can't wait to see this! Thanks for giving us a preview.

  • I hope it will be released soon! ^_^

I'll upload some more preveiw clips on youtube, so watch this space! Although you can veiw them all on the link I have too, to be fair ^^

  • One of the best movies I've watched lately!!

    Thanks theorah!!!

  • gah! You've seen it?! XD Im jelous! Rewally, Im very excited about this film, since Im such a big fan of both movies in general and The Magic Flute...I hope they release it in England soon so I can see it too! =D
