  • HAHA, redneck starter!

  • There were a lot of ads for these Guiberson engines in '30s-'40s aviation magazines, but I can't think of an airplane powered by one.

  • @whizbang47 Some aircraft were powered by these. I do not know what ones, but some were.

  • Is like starting a big garden cutter jejeje

  • You would use a small gas engine to start many big motors

  • i love the starting procedure

  • that is incredibly awesome

  • use starter fluid. damn.

  • @Ibringthetruth1 never do that on a diesel!

    '

  • @Ibringthetruth1 Because this engine does not have glow plugs you can use starter fluid, but it is never good to use it. When you use starter fluid the engine is no longer timed because the injectors time diesel motors, also you can over rev it very easy.

  • need to use the powerful start motor

  • That thing belongs in a Rat Rod.

  • There is no mount for a starter to be bolted to because there is no transmission assembly bolted up to the engine so they improvised and used a common wheel rim bolted to the flywheel to wrap the pull around to get it started.

  • haha all swedish haha. cool diesel engine haha

  • I immediately leave everyone one of your videos becuase you dont offer embed. I look for that for a reason. C ya.

  • i saw the pic and thought the radial engine was in the truck im like wtf

  • what was this engine used for?

  • Started like a lawnmower only in giant scale with a truck pooling the coil, that is inginuety. By the way thumbs up for those cool vintage trucks :-)

  • WHAT TRUCK IS THAT WITH A 6 CYL?

  • no no no if you wont power go with a 4.9L 300ci inline 6 25-30 mpg to. but if you wont power and speed go ford 460ci big block i like the 300 cus you cant kill it with any thing i have the same one last me 4 trucks

  • @dondondonman i put 160k on my 300 6 powered e350 and it got 14 mpg

  • @dondondonman

what the heck you been smokin?!? sorry bub but I never saw a 300 inline 6 that got 25mpg, much less 30mpg. with factory size tires and 3.55 gears my EFI 300 would get a consistent 16.5, and about 15 with 33 inch tires

  • @dondondonman OR i ve seen people remove one piston, ( if it threw a rod) and run them on 5 cylinders. the inline engines, are great. they last for ages i know of one right now wiht 416k ( miles) engine runs fine. although it smokes a tad now)

  • I love that sound!!

  • hahaa,, a pull cord hooked up to a truck lol.. u couldn't find a giant recoil?

  • thats one hell of a pull start!

  • Damn! You have given me a great idea for starting that cranky lawn mower of mine!

  • @JGMagoo my uncle did it i've done it try bumpstarting it

  • i want one, no two

i heard that in korea the guys would poke a stick in the oil before start up and it was like taffy. sometimes they woiuld light a fire under the pan to give it a head start

  • i want one, no two

  • what a beautiful sounding engine

  • Awesome, it's like cranking a lawnmover.....with a truck as the hand

  • Never heard of a diesel radial engine before now....

  • Imagine that at 20 below......burn 50 liters of gasoline trying to start the diesel engine...

  • @goofyexponent how you buring gasoline when a diesel engine burn diesel oil?

  • @northeasteg6 Gas powered truck yanking the pull cord lol

  • Best 'rope start' ever!

Now, see, you need to build a really big recoil starter. Then you just back ukp and try again!

    :-)

  • I love the method used to start the engine. That's just insanely awesome.

  • you should use the steam tractor it easier to get it start or stationary engine

  • Jobergg can you make another vidja of this engine?

  • What in the would would you put that thing in?

  • Wow now thats what i call a pull starter! I love the sound of this motor! Wow!!!

  • I'm glad I'm not the guy who has to pull the rope by hand on a cold morning!!

  • what in gods name would you use that for? haha

  • I agree, what in the hell would that go in??????

  • older planes use rotary style engines, may be used in the oil field for a pump...

  • @Bman0229 My bet would be as a generator engine, tank engine, maybe some kind of equipment engine. I can't think of maybe but one older aircraft that used a diesel engine, especially a radial.

  • just love how all odd cylinder motors sound like they got massive cams in them..nice sound.

  • @rsvcivic Listen, ask any girl a fart can Honda does not impress her.

  • @studpuppy69 if a girl can tell car models apart shes not worth fucking

  • huge ass lawn mower engine. ha i still like radial piston engines the sound is so unique. be it deisle or gas

  • How would one start this if they didn't have a spare 5 ton truck to pull start?

  • @1tristan1henderson well you could tie the rope to a tree and drive the truck you have it mounted on forward.

  • @1tristan1henderson wrap it around the fat chick and push her over.

  • put 1 in a puller

  • cummins 100% i dont like new cummins cuz they have all the emissions control crap

  • Two of these are at the Vista Gas and steam engine museum, all the way back on the hill where you can barely see them, I plan on overhauling at least one as soon as I get a working forklift.

  • sounds like a powerstoke

  • LOL, not quite. What are you, Cummins or Duramax? (Cummins kick ass, but I like 'em all)

  • Man, oh, man! You know exactly how to enjoy engines! My congrats, & my respect.

  • They tell me there is one on display at a wrecking yard in Fresno, Calif. I've been meaning to go see it, but I heard they had a big fire recently..I hope the engine is still there.

  • Could you put in a plane?

  • Yeah, the T-1020 was actually a diesel aircraft engine (there were a few of those made!). I don't know that it was ever successful in a plane (it WAS flown in a Stinson Reliant, 1940), but it was used as a tank engine in M1,2, and 3's in WWII. Supposedly it was de-tuned to about 245HP in that form; I don't know whether the rest of it was changed to make it cheaper and heavier (i.e. Merlin to Meteor), but I would hazard that this is an aircraft version, and it would work in a plane.

  • Despite the seemingly low horsepower, this thing probably has an immense amount of torque.

  • Could you put one in a truck?

  • why put one when you can put two ? haha.

  • Yup, you could put it in a truck. If it can power a 20,000lb tank, it should hande a truck okay. It won't be FAST, and it's gotta be geared down some, but it can be done. Look up "Radial Engined Car"; this German dude stuffed a radial in the back of a tiny little car, only he made the mounts, frame, tranny, etc. from SCRATCH. Very skilled guy. Anyway, this engine in a 1-ton or bigger with the right gears would do the trick. Get up early on cold mornings! You'll need a few hours to start her up!

  • Yep, he put a Vedeneyev M14P in it. All 10.4 litres and 340 horsepower of it.

And I was talking about a big hauler.

  • She definitely runs nice. Burns fuel efficiently. Almost no black smoke at all. Made in 1940 and produces 320 hp... just awesome! Pretty soundin too.

  • Aspect ratio!!!!

You Tube thinks this video is 4x3 and is displaying it squished. Please fix!!! Otherwise this is a very interesting video!!!

Just be sure to know how to upload properly next time.

  • Thats awesome!! Ive heard of diesel radial engines before, but never seen one or even a vid of one. It sounds great. Could you fit a easy starting system on there? Like an air starter or heavy duty electric one? Does it have any heat based starting aid like glow plus, grid heaters, intake heaters? Whats the compression ratio?

    Thanks for sharing, excellent vid.

  • sounds amazing. very nice, guys

  • That is a beautiful sounding CI engine. Where can I get one?

Of course I would have to figure out a way to run an electric starter...

  • couldnt u use a winch motor?

  • yeah, that would look real nice on a semi. small size but good power, eh?

  • ever think about puttin in an electric start?

  • and what starter u gona find to turn that over

  • you could use compressed air...

  • wow that amazing.who gives a shit surely you knew that

  • that was awesome, loved the pull starter

  • wonder why they dont use radial engines in trucks, imagine how roomy you could make a van or a truck cab with a short engine like that..

  • That is seriously cool.

  • So... no Briggs & Stratton E-Z Pull system will fit?

Very cool engine. I knew they were out there, but I've never seen nor heard one run before.

  • Ive only ever heard of another radial diesel, a 2 stroke radial diesel by nordberg.

  • BMW and mitsubishi made a couple.

  • I, too, knew that they existed, but had never seen one, or a video of one, before. Packard (US) and Bristol (UK) also designed radial Diesels, but they never got past the prototype stage.

  • I think the powerfullest radial diesel aircraft engine was the Clerget 14F ,740hp , 940hp in emergency (during the certification tests, the engine hold 2hours emergency power at overspeed!) built in 1939, but the war stops the production.

Cleget (France) produce diesel radial sinze 1932 to reduce the fire danger

  • I like how they pull start it with the truck!!!!! hahaha cool old stuff

  • Bullshit, It's a Pratt & Withney 985 from a Sherman tank. On aircraft such as the Beech 18,

it had 450 HP...it was very powerful for it's day.

They called the Sherman "Ronson" because it had a gazoline engine running on aviation fuel

    that blew up easy...

  • this was in earlier shermans.surely you knew that.

  • Most of the radials used in Shermans were a Continental GASOLINE engine. The only diesel radial ever found in a Sherman was in the M4A6 version which was a Caterpillar D200A. Shermans never used this engine. But, surely you knew that.

  • this is what the soviets used as a replacement to the R975 continental.we have several gubes in some old soviet tanks were remodeling at a museum in cali.

  • i didnt know they made diesel radials! =) very cool

  • That sure is a cool way of starting a motor

  • 9 cylinder? never heard of before :D

  • Now thats what I call a pull starter!!

  • Hahahaha this cracks me up this just goes to show that you can rope start any engine other than a Briggs and Stratton or any small lawnmower engine basically, yes you can even rope start a radial engine, WITH A TRUCK! LOL

  • All you need is a bigger puller...

  • Neat way to start that engine! I wonder if it originally had a "Coffman" (cartridge) starter? Originally used in tanks, I think...

  • Now that you mention it, I wonder: How DID they start those big radials in a tank? I'd guess a BIG electric starter. Either that or comressed air. I've never heard of air on a tank, but it's certainly possible. They use it in big trucks, and tanks need brakes too. Did they have air-brakes, or what? I doubt that they used a Coffman starter; the reason they use them in planes is because an electric starter is too heavy, and it's too difficult to haul a air-comressor around to start the engines.

  • omg it idle @ 200 rpm :)

  • A wonderful thing remains in foreign countries.

  • cool. I dont understand whats a radial engine and cold start?Sorry I build turbo hondas..So know nothign about this. but seems interesting.

  • radial engine has the cylinders arranged around the crank so often will have 1 crank journal for all 9 cylinders for example all con rods conect to same spot - more or less.

U dont know what cold start is?

Its like a hot start only in back to front world.

  • That's your problem. Turbo Hondas are for faggots who need to learn to get a V8.

  • Well, I wouldn't have painted that big of a target, but I'd have to agree... While turbos are cool, Hondas are decidedly NOT!

  • ride in a 9 second 69 camaro and ull never want to ride in a honda agian

  • Oh, I doubt that. I'd love a ride in a 9 second Camaro, but I can have a lot of fun in a fucking Geo Metro! LOL, if it's a vehicle, I'm IN. Fast in a straight line is great, but I couldn't give up little cars, all nimble and light. Maybe it's because I live in VT; there are no straight roads around here! The whole state is mountains, and a muscle car would be a bear to drive on these roads. I can't say a Honda is my FIRST choice, but neither is a Camaro. I guess drag racing was never my "thing".

  • Haha just because a vehicle is light does not make it nimble. that only a small part of it . if you like curvy lines buy a BMW like me. i have both cars. although a muscle car is no rally car set up right it would surprise you

  • Yeah, I'm a fan of BMW's myself, but I'm too damn poor. I guess lightweights are just my preference; I always root for the underdog! LOL. But generally, a light car is more responsive (and much less thirsty). I'd really love to drive an old English sports car someday. They ain't perfect, but manual steering and everything? good times! I won't argue AGAINST muscle cars, but I think some people don't give small cars the credit they deserve. I like ALL cars (trucks too...anything with an engine!).

  • bmws' arent as expensive as youd think. you can get a 330i from the states for like 8 grand

my 330i get around 38 mpg with 94 octane gas. my Camaro gets around 4-8. but keep in mind it makes 600 hp

  • Or an 8 second dodge cummins.

  • @shadowhunter45s Oh boy it can do nine in the quarter. It can't stop for shit and it can't corner any better.

I'll take a Honda NSX over a nine second Camaro any day.

  • @TestECull ride in any american muscle car and you'll leave your hondas.. ill take ya for a ride in my 99 cobra and that'll change ur mind.. i corner just fine

  • @xmodrock The NSX will easily outrun your '99 Cobra. There's two problems with a '99 Cobra. 1: It's a fucking fatass car. It weighs about twice as much as it needs to. 2: It has a pickup truck axle in the back. This makes it very skittish on exit and negatively effects braking stability. Feed it more than 350-400 WHP and it becomes positively uncontrollable in the corners, feed it any less and it barely moves.

  • @TestECull umm actually it has IRS, and it only weighs in at 3000 pounds flat? so its really a light weight car for a mustang.. and with the right tires it will keep up just fine

  • @xmodrock Oh, so it's one of the few Mustangs ford built properly, and thusly one of the few I would actually want to own, before the purists started bitching about it not having a truck axle in the back?

Well then it might actually be an interesting race then. May even be up to individual ham-fistedness as to which car comes out on top. The IRS Mustangs actually handle quite good. It's a shame the purists ruined it....

  • @TestECull actually its a 1999 from way back in the day... and if you saw the kelly blue book reviews you'd know the new ones with a 9" truck axel don't behave like they have one.. they behve like they have IRS

  • @shadowhunter45s Two words mate, LEAF SPRINGS! Fuck American cars man, you're all still living in the bloody stone age.

  • @skythegeek Having an iron origami holding every wheel on isn't necessary for basic transport. A beam axle with two leaf springs will work for the average driver's needs. Sure if you want a car that handles good a truck axle isn't ideal, but for the average joe who wouldn't know an apex if you hit him with one, a leaf spring live axle setup is more than sufficient.

High tech does not automatically mean better. When will you douchenozzles figure that out?

  • @TestECull

A well made Independent suspension should last just as long. Problem is most are not. I have a 97 Mazda Miata Its been driven hard every day I have owned it, now has 207K on it.. never had a ball joint, tie rod, or control arm bushing replaced. Granted its a light car at 2600lbs, but as I said.. I hit ever corner hard, and do it regularly. Solid axles can be done right too though. Mazda had a nice setup on the 1st Gen RX7's. I hear the new Stang handles well too with its live axle.

  • @kens97sto171 The new Stang is pretty good but if you make just one mistake with the throttle the back end starts pitterpattering all over the damn place. Once it starts doing that you had best be good at rally or drift, 'cause otherwise it's going around.

  • @shadowhunter45s my pops had a 9.5 68.....but i love my 10.5 accord

  • @shadowhunter45s not even a 9 second honda?

  • @shadowhunter45s

    Dude 9 seconds is nothing...

  • @shadowhunter45s ride in a 8 second DSM and ull never want to ride in a camaro again. lol. just kidding. i drive the camaro to just cruze. >:D

  • @DG121480 hondas are the biggest piece of shit ever

  • @DG121480

    sage

  • Indeed couldn't have said it better 4 cyl rice burners are for fags

  • Whatever you say, dude. "Fast and Furious" cars annoy the shit out of me, but some of the fastest cars and coolest trucks are not only 4-cyls, but ricers to boot. Japs have been making better cars than us since the 70's. Don't blame the cars, blame the idiots who drive them. There are other ways to drive a car than in a straight line, and many V8 machines would eat dust anywhere but the drag strip. I like ANYTHING with an engine, but if I had only 1 car, I'd choose a 4-banger over a thirsty V8.

  • Thumbs up on that!

  • Aww, screw you (not to be rude...). Anyone who likes engines will appreciate one whether it's got 4 cylinders or 8. The only problem I have with Hondas, etc, is the stupid shit people deck them out with. Too bad so many Honda drivers like to "Fast and Furious" their cars. Other than that, Hondas are excellent cars. They wanna look like idiots, they can go ahead. There are 4-cyls out there that are miracles of engineering. Lancia Delta S4: 0-60 in 2.5sec. It's MORE impressive since it only has 4.

  • @ceetwarrior ya ok, but they get better gas mileage and they are fast enough compared to a heavy v8 car. I agree that ricers suck with the farty exhaust. Gimme a turbo civic that's quiet please.

  • @ceetwarrior Why are you SUCH a hater? Good grief...grow the hell up, child!

  • @ceetwarrior

don't know how you would have a V8 seeing as red necks can't learn too good.

  • You don't know what a radial engine is!? Wikipedia, my friend, Wikipedia. A cold start means that the engine isn't warmed up yet. A REALLY cold start, in cold weather is hard, 'cause cold oil stiffens. A cold engine is harder to start, particularly diesels, since they are compression-ignition. You don't speak English as a first language, do you? OR you don't really build engines. And fuck what anyone else says, anyone who REALLY likes engines can appreciate one whether it's got 4-cyl or 8.

  • Jobergg, king of cold starts...

  • Thanks CyberPassenger, I think this one is the most unusual cold start I ever seen!

  • Ill take two please. Cool engines. Could use them in a saw mill.

  • Thats a cool way to start an engine..lol

  • i have never seen a radial diesel before. thank you! its always a pleasure to watch your videos!

  • WOW it's amazing ! I never saw this kind of start !!! Is it usual ?
