  • Carnatic music and jazz music go hand in hand due to space in their music and how it encourages improvisation/free-style.

  • I love the album Kinsmen

  • Jazz a totally AMERICAN construct!

  • Carnatic music (Sanskrit: Karnāṭaka saṃgītaṃ) is a system of music commonly associated with the southern part of the Indian subcontinent, with its area roughly confined to four modern states of India: Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu.

  • He's being very modest about we he has accomplished. The man broke free of western musical constraints. Something Coltrane and Ornette Coleman never succeeded in, check out the New Yorker piece on him entitled "A Passage to India" really fascinating stuff.

  • Same thing dude. There are variations in spelling because they come from tamil alphabet.

  • Maybe he is saying that it is not like Miles Davis' fusion era and more of his own new sub genre or something. Indeed confusing.

  • I think he avoids the term "fusion" because of all the shitty music that resulted in the heyday of jazz-rock fusion ie Yellowjackets, weather report, all that sucky GRP label crap. Most people think of that when they hear the word fusion and I can totally understand why he'd avoid the term.

  • crazy-weather report owns u

  • Jazz-Indian fusions of the past haven't really taken in more than instrumentation and a few musical figures from Indian music. Mahanthappa's hybrid music involves much more use of complex material from the Carnatic tradition.

  • This is my first time actually hearing Rudresh Mahanthappa Quintet play. Thanks to WRTI Temple Univ. for the introduction to him.

    Very creative.

  • Are that kind of saxophones (played by the player with read shirt)sold in india?

  • it looks like its made in america, but was decorated to look more indian. i think.

  • Sri Kadri Gopalnath is GOD

  • Love it - a great refresher for jazz

  • alright if your eating curry in a resturant

  • that was just my opinion BTW tho no one ever asked.

  • i dont know about Rudresh but i do know about kadri and im a jazz pianist and im not a great fan of the fusion but im a huge of of both the gernres seperately

  • I am sure people can make a case against some forms of "fusion" or whatever it is they are doing that may not be pleasing to everyone, but someone that tries to bring down an artist of Kadri Gopalnath' calibre needs some serious ear training.

  • You sound like an old school closed minded punk!

  • lol do i...

  • yes...you do

  • What are you talking about? The fellow playing carnatic on the sax is a legend. I doubt that your opinion is going to change his status in the art buddy :)

  • not a legend to me i dont even know him, never heard of him ,

  • He's a huge legend of Carnatic music - maybe you just don't know too much about the genre.

  • Nice music Rudy!

  • love it when the holy jazz gets shared with the world.

  • What a wonderful sound! Sure there have been crossover groups before,

but that's not the point. It's all about the end result and from the way these

samples sound, this is very happening!

  • This is a brand new hybrid of music. It hasn't had time to "incubate" very much. Give it a chance and see what comes of it; it might turn out good after a while.

  • Haha. Fusion is the F word.

    Great video and music!

  • jazz is more or less a hundred years old. indian classical music is over a thousand.

this isnt jazz. this is fusion. jazz WITH indian classical music 'fused'..

  • I do not understand this type of music but it ain't the jazz I know and love.

  • RIGHT ON!

  • Natraj in Boston, MA has been doing something similar to this since the 1980's. Check them out also.

Rez is a fantastic guitarist. I love his last record.

  • My family and heritage is in the birthplace of jazz, New Orleans, Louisiana. Originally, Jazz was always a combination of cultures from Europe and Africa. Now we have more beautiful combinations like this one. I love this so much! I'm glad he and his father are playing Jazz.

  • Actually Jazz and the Blues is an African-American creation. The Blues gave birth to Jazz. Later Euro-Americans took up an interest and now Jazz is everywhere.

  • This type of mixing Jazz with Indian Carnatic musics goes back to the mid- and late-60s, so it's nothing new and innovative. Still, Kinsmen sounds good.

  • dunno man, Rudresh's music is pretty cutting edge...

  • i think ever music for every culture is beautiful, but i love hearing something new

  • music is a great bridge between cultures

and that was some good jazz!
