1 of my fav fliks of all time! So much win in this film. Petersen & Dafoe -- both complete unknowns before this film. The dickhead police Lieutenant? Robert Downey Senior! One of the arthouse dancers? Daphne from "Frazier"! The base-jumping stuntman? Dar Robinson! If you haven't seen this film then go get the DVD right now. I'll wait.
mann didn't sue. it was a rumour put out in a Hollywood magazine. Friedkin and Mann have been good friends for nearly forty-five years now, i believe.
@JOSKE123100 agreed. this movie predates manhunter, which is much closer to "LA" than miami vice-- which people forget is mostly cheese. the realistic counterfeiting stuff in "LA" seems to be an influence on mann's technical scenes in Manhunter. aesthetically "LA" pretty clearly influenced Mann, not the other way around. "LA" is a stylistic landmark, even if Manhunter is the superior film.
Confused Mathew's brief review of this movie sparked my curiosity to see the trailer, and despite his negative response, seeing this trailer definitely sparked my interest. I would actually watch this.
Is this complete beast of a film out in UK "region" on DVD/Blue Ray, just USA region 1 I seem to see online shops which wont run on my countries players?
This movie is just way too BAD-ASS!! Funny that Michael Mann saw this and cast Peterson in Manhunter. Too of the best films of the 80s/ever and Peterson is way underrated.
@jlassh Really?? I didn't know that. I remember when it came out, I was sure it was Michael Mann movie lol, and it sure felt like Vice (my favorite tv show).
Awesome trailer. That's the one I remember that made me want to see the film. 1985 was quite a year. While this film barely had a budget to rent cameras to cover one of the greatest car chase scenes of all time, it is still one of the best of that year, right up there with Brazil and Ran. It's that good. The Wayne Chung soundtrack is both unusual and brilliant. And Robby Muller's cinematography is just what the movie asked for - a smog-red, pre Library Tower L.A.
This is really the best movie of the 80s, like "French Connection" was for the 70s! And William Petersen is fucking cool in this movie, also Willem Dafoe!
By the way, have somebody read the book of Gerald Petievich on which the movie ist based? Are there diferences between the movie and the book? And sorry for my english, I´m not a native speaker!
@nukeasfinest96792 Your right he was in 2 Brilliant movies in the 80s, this and Manhunter, the reason why he didn't become a huge movie star was because he rejected a lot of top movies like Goodfellas, Heat and Platoon
@nukeasfinest96792 uuuuuuuuhh- yeah he just ended up being a nobody on this little tv show called CSI- - no wait- its actually one of the most popular shows in the World, not just the US :)
Billy Petersen was Great in this Role as Richard Chance he added a lot of Realism and Subtlety to his Character in the Film instead of playing this "One Man to save the day" Unrealistic Over the Top Crap that Mel Gibson in Lethal Weapon does.
A master forger named "Masters," a cop who takes too many chances called "Chance." And both are two sides of the same "coin" with the same first name. I just noticed that even after I've seen the DVD ten times, god I must be an idiot.
The lead actor (don't even know is name) looks like a pencil-necked total pussy, they should have found someone else, like Chick Norris or Mel Gibson.
@dcddjc what CGI did it have in the movie? one of the best CGI in a 80's movie was in The Last Starfighter or in Predator when he goes invisible and kills alot of people in the jungle!
i just saw this movie on cable not too long ago, my goodness what a hell of a movie great story and plot. It was sad how william peterson died at the end.
@filmfanman65 yea but thats in a good way right? id love to live in 1985 again even though i was 3/4 lol this was filmed in late 84/ early 85......films like Rocky 4/Aliens/Predator/Running Man/The Abyss for example dont seem dated!
"your taste is in your ass" is like saying your head is up your ass...basically you have shitty taste. This movie kicked ass. Fast paced and exciting, and a surprise ending too.
Why it wasn't a blockbuster is a complete mystery. I remember seeing the trailer when it first came out but I didn't get a chance to see if until it came out on VHS believe it or not. It deserved an oscar just for the opening sound effects in the airport scenes.

This movie is about as close to real life as a movie can come. There's no happy endings in reality and nobody is either truly "good" or "evil".

I suspect that Rick Masters was bisexual. Then again, every character Willem Dafoe plays comes off as bisexual. Maybe it's just me.

Roger Ebert gave this Top marks 4 stars out of 4 stars - "The film isn't just about cops
and robbers, but about two systems of doing business, and how one of
the systems finds a way to change itself in order to defeat the other.
That's interesting. So is the chase"A Quote from Roger Ebert's review of to live and die la November 1985.
