@IceXMan87 ..Not only was he Gorgeous(still is)! He gave an OSCAR worthy performance in this movie! It's one of my favorite movies.FYI...Originally, the guitar player (on the far left) was one of the Originals in "the 1970's group "The Runnaway's) but was replaced by lita Ford . Joan jett was as you know basically started the group with Sandy West, RIP, and Kim Fowely...
I agree with twinkle, this is my favorite reading of the song mainly as Hoff's voice, while limited, is always effectively utilized to it's maximum potential. Less than Zero was a movie that started me on the way to eventually cleaning up alot of bad behaviors. This song makes my favorites if only for that.
@greeneyedstone42 Heh, oddly enough, me too. That film at the time - I was 18 - when it came out was quite a shocker for a lot of us I suppose. Brilliant flick, haven't seen it in ages. have to watch it this Xmas.
@thelitlemermaid77373 Yeah?? Me too!! 1987...the dream year. Long before a ride in an open car riding toward destiny, daring fate to shoot me down...wait. You wont get that reference. Never mind. Still, an awesome song from an awesome year.
As I watch this video, the sky here is a "hazy shade of winter". The following lines I see as the most optimistic of the song, and even they seem bittersweet to me.
Hang on to your hopes my friend
That's an easy thing to say
But if your hopes should pass away
Simply pretend
That you can build them again
Classic "fake it until you make it". Better than giving up during dark times in my point of view.
Never cared for them, but loved this one; it certainly proved that they could really rock it if they wanted to! Sadly, this wasn't the version used on the actual soundtrack album, which is just plain too weak -- closer to pop than rock, really. Only flaw to the video would be the occasional goofy smile, which really seems out of character given the tone of the song. Otherwise, though, one of the best uses of a film's clips for one of its videos. A cover that far surpasses the original!
@tjhoenecke Have to agree with you. Typically I find covers rarely measure up to the original. This is a true exception. These girls can harmonize with the best of 'em. I think Paul Simon was proud of this version.
Maybe they were a bubble-gum eighties "chick band". But these girls could flat out rock when they wanted to. Killer drum beat, killer harmonies. Just a great ass-kicking song. Wish they had made more like this.
@beerjitsu I saw them live in Sydney last night, they opened with this song, Michael was not there just Debbie, Vicki and Susannah. I was there to see Pat Benatar the main act but came away with a massive respect and fandom of the Bangles, SO good live! True musos, both beautiful and talented!
Whoever says this version is better than the original needs an hear test. I like these women too, i like their music, but the original is the original... there is no way on earth, this is better than the original.
if ur gonna bad mouth the 80's about anything then it's gotta be the fashion, but leave the music alone. musicians were a lot more talented back then. i hardly listen to the radio at all nowadays.
Ya, so it can't beat Simon and Garfunkel's, but I like the speed and upbeat edginess of this variation all the same! The female voices and electric guitar are well-employed here I think. Thanks for posting!
This is such a kick ass song!! Now, normally i do not like covers but this is an excellent cover of Simon and Garfunkel's version. It was used in an excellent 80's movie, Less than Zero!! Wow, this song takes me back to such great memories!! The best really. Such a great time of my life. Why it all had to change, I guess that is life but hard to let go of what we loved the most. I will always miss the 80's but I hold the memories tightly in my heart forever. Missing the 80's. 80's forever!!
@twinklebear22 Right on! I don't care for some covers either. When my kids are listening to "their" music, I sometimes say "do you know where that song is actually from?".
Now that I watch songs here, I'm realizing that a lot of the ones that I loved in the 80's are covers. I like Under My Thumb by Streetheart better, but that's even going back to 79. eek!
I miss the 80s so bad too. What a great time of life.
This is definitely the Bangle's best hit, in my opinion. The women themselves agree with me; I think it was Vicki Peterson (the lead guitarist) herself that admitted the sound on this track is the closest to what they sound like live.
Saw the movie, had forgotten the Bangles were in it -- and never knew til now they'd done it for the movie.
Love the Bangles cover, love the S&G original. Don't really get how one could be "better" than the other; they're such different takes, it's almost a different song.
less than zero. great book, shocker of a movie, This song was used over the title credits. (i think). book by bret easton ellis. of american psycho fame.
