  • It's a shame these were never sold in Britain as Vauxhalls, they could have sold quite well. Indeed, I'd give my right arm for one to lower and put on Astro Supremes or Chrome reverse wheels on whitewalls. Then it would be my daily driver. Same with the Olds F-85 or Buick Special, but maybe with a 4 litre Rover V8 up front.

With regard to the swing axles, Mercedes and Volkwagen had them at this time.

  • I'm on my second Le-mans. 1st one was in Ohio some 40 years ago. I'm in CA now and this little bugger DOES have rust. In the SAME places I've seen Detroit Tempests have. Has 11000 miles on it...this turn round lol. Having a shut off problem! Have to shut it off in DRIVE or it shutters all to hell.

  • I just got mine running this week. San Diego. After many years sitting. Running nice.

  • unique cars! we have a 62 four door sedan. It was a California car so it is 100% rust free. Got the thing for $650, but the tranny only goes in reverse

  • The original Tempest was be a badge-engineered Chevrolet Corvair but Semon "Bunkie" Knudsen, then Pontiac's general manager, had a niece who was "brutally injured" in a Corvair crash--and he successfully convinced GM to have the Tempest share platform of the Oldsmobile F-85 and Buick Special for '61. The Corvair contributed its transaxle--thus "front-engine, rear-transmission"--and some very tricky handling (note the reference to "swing axles" in the commercial)...

  • My mother had a 62 tempest wagon. She loved that car.

  • Now that's a car you just never see!
