  • I've been trying to figure this out for years. This is the first video that actually broke it down to the level that I could follow!! Thanks! And, thanks for the original groove Jeff!

  • Missing the Bo Diddley figure..

  • @jerkass411 you're right lol

  • Or you could watch Jeff play it himself on this same page

  • Wrong

  • at last someone who plays and explains the difference between shuffle & half time shuffle, I didn't grasp that until watching this, very helpful, thanks mate

  • This makes no sense. A critical part of the Rosanna beat is that the high hat is struck in TRIPLETS. That's not what's going on here. It's like a car with square wheels. This is not a nuance -- it's the essence of the whole thing.

(Good heavens, talk about overthinking the ghost notes -- watch Bernard Purdie do it, they just happen.)

This guy is usually okay, but this video is way off.

  • Dude, you explain the top half of the song, while neglecting the bottom... and you never actually play the tune, nor do you demonstrate the groove anywhere up to speed.

What you did manage to do is completely complicate things with the hi-hat explanation... which is inaccurate to begin with.

  • thank you well explained 3min lesson :)

  • Ouch, hard to learning from a left handed player.

  • He is over complicating this groove! The "shoulder-tip" feel comes naturally when you begin to settle into the grove. Once you "retrain" your ride hand to half time shuffle from the 3 note jazz beat, you will master this. To someone trying to learn this groove, I wouldn't recommend this video. See Bernard Purdie or Jeff Porcaro. I believe Purdie was the first to popularize this groove.

  • @chefjimmie1 -

    ...agreed!

  • its purdie shuffle and bonhams fool in the rain pocaror mad a hi bred to get rosanna

  • @hungwell90 he actually just did a half time shuffle with a bo diddly on the bass drum

  • Embarrassing.

  • it is superb that you've had to be focused on what is he doing beceause of left-hand leading! i like it:)

  • this is a bit more in-depth than the Porcaro vid, but of course that one is straight from the horse's mouth, so to speak

  • on the hi-hat, möller technik I think.

  • hey, nice video! feel free to check out my page, got videos of my drumming to a good few toto numbers, including rosanna, rosanna shuffle all the way!

  • Very very well illustrated. Thank You !!

  • why does everyone feel the need to re-explain this beat when the creator HIMSELF has a video on youtube explaining how to do it? I mean really?

  • @jerkass411 agree!

  • @jerkass411 You mean the one in which he keeps burping and belching some rotten meal while explaining the beat, grossing everybody out?

  • @jerkass411 I actually found the more thorough explanation of the hi hat technique really helpful.

  • @jerkass411 i thought that this explanation was more of a beginner's explanation, it goes into a little bit more detail on the integration of the hi-hat and the snare, but not as much detail on the bass drum as porcaro's video

  • @jerkass411 coz the video of him doing it is shit and hes really annoying

  • @4headsharkyBL haha I can tell you won't go far in life if you can't understand what he's showing you.

  • @jerkass411 um how about u go fuck yourself i never said that i couldn't understand what he said just that hes really annoying and that the video is shit i can play the song now thanks to this guy tho thank you stick library

  • @4headsharkyBL Please help me understand how this video is considered "shit"?

  • @jerkass411 if i made a really poor quality video of me saying the same 5 words over and over agin you would get annoyed

  • @4headsharkyBL It's sad you can't look past the quality, because I was able to understand what he was trying to teach perfectly fine.

  • @jerkass411

Well, Jeff's explanation wasn't all that thorough.

  • @Catmangamer That's probably true, but its a pretty easy beat to hear. I just don't think it needed to be explained in much greater detail.

  • @jerkass411 I was wondering the same thing.

  • @jerkass411 I find it helpful to see other drummers play and explain complex grooves like this one. That is because I have my own interpretation of certain grooves while other drummers have a different interpretation. I find it helpful and interesting to watch other drummers play because every drummer is going to explain it differently, some better than others and I can pick up a thing or two from each and then put it together to make my OWN interpretation. That's what it is all about.

  • @chefjimmie1 I thought the point of learning a certain drum beat was to learn it exactly how it was intended to be or " interpreted".

  • @jerkass411 If you listen closely, you can hear little nuances that some drummers use that others don't. When I play this groove, I tend to dot my eighth notes more like Bernard Purdie when John Bonham plays them more directly and straight. I also like to raise and lower my ride volume every other measure in certain grooves to achieve a loping effect. Some ghost snare notes more or less to taste. Drummers are as unique as fingerprints and no two play the same groove exactly the same. Variables!

  • @jerkass411 Because Pete goes into more detail and goes over it more slowly than does Jeff.

  • @91Bear then you shouldn't learn it at all if you can't keep up with words. Whatever, Youtube has become an outlet for self-validation and know-it-alls to talk out of their ass. It makes me sick.

  • @jerkass411 Did you intend for that to be ironic?

  • @jerkass411 why dont you go to every other drummer teaching the half time shuffle and tell them the same thing ass

  • @YamahaDan100 haha I did

  • I want my screen mirror, otherwise i won't understand

  • @91Bartek2365 come on, how many left handed drummers do lessons? at least give us 1!

  • Those of you saying he's doing it wrong do know this isn't the entire lesson, right?

  • It is titled How to play drums -Rosanna-Toto.

  • Don't think the Bo Diddley stomp really matters here. He explains the half time shuffle perfectly. And before even attempting the Rosanna shuffle it's essential that you understand the Purdie shuffle, which he is basically playing here. This is the backbone of the Rosanna shuffle! He's not playing it wrong at all since he's explaining the idea behind it, not the actual shuffle.

  • Why would you even TRY and explain this beat when there is video of Jeff doing it on here??? How do you follow Jeff, he was Sooo Amazing!!!

  • @keepntyme I agree with you totally. The guy is an ass. Jeff clearly states the presence of Bo Diddly stomp. I mentioned that to this guy and all he could say was "your spelling it wrong" lol What a loser.

  • Your playing it wrong. Where is the Bo Diddley stomp?

  • @kevykev38 You're spelling it wrong. Where is the 're ?

  • Great lesson on this pattern. Very clear!
