I've been trying to figure this out for years. This is the first video that actually broke it down to the level that I could follow!! Thanks! And, thanks for the original groove Jeff!
at last someone who plays and explains the difference between shuffle & half time shuffle, I didn't grasp that until watching this, very helpful, thanks mate
This makes no sense. A critical part of the Rosanna beat is that the high hat is struck in TRIPLETS. That's not what's going on here. It's like a car with square wheels. This is not a nuance -- it's the essence of the whole thing.
(Good heavens, talk about overthinking the ghost notes -- watch Bernard Purdie do it, they just happen.)
This guy is usually okay, but this video is way off.
Dude, you explain the top half of the song, while neglecting the bottom... and you never actually play the tune, nor do you demonstrate the groove anywhere up to speed.
What you did manage to do is completely complicate things with the hi-hat explanation... which is inaccurate to begin with.
He is over complicating this groove! The "shoulder-tip" feel comes naturally when you begin to settle into the grove. Once you "retrain" your ride hand to half time shuffle from the 3 note jazz beat, you will master this. To someone trying to learn this groove, I wouldn't recommend this video. See Bernard Purdie or Jeff Porcaro. I believe Purdie was the first to popularize this groove.
hey, nice video! feel free to check out my page, got videos of my drumming to a good few toto numbers, including rosanna, rosanna shuffle all the way!
@jerkass411 i thought that this explanation was more of a beginner's explanation, it goes into a little bit more detail on the integration of the hi-hat and the snare, but not as much detail on the bass drum as porcaro's video
@jerkass411 um how about u go fuck yourself i never said that i couldn't understand what he said just that hes really annoying and that the video is shit i can play the song now thanks to this guy tho thank you stick library
@jerkass411 I find it helpful to see other drummers play and explain complex grooves like this one. That is because I have my own interpretation of certain grooves while other drummers have a different interpretation. I find it helpful and interesting to watch other drummers play because every drummer is going to explain it differently, some better than others and I can pick up a thing or two from each and then put it together to make my OWN interpretation. That's what it is all about.
@jerkass411 If you listen closely, you can hear little nuances that some drummers use that others don't. When I play this groove, I tend to dot my eighth notes more like Bernard Purdie when John Bonham plays them more directly and straight. I also like to raise and lower my ride volume every other measure in certain grooves to achieve a loping effect. Some ghost snare notes more or less to taste. Drummers are as unique as fingerprints and no two play the same groove exactly the same. Variables!
@91Bear then you shouldn't learn it at all if you can't keep up with words. Whatever, Youtube has become an outlet for self-validation and know-it-alls to talk out of their ass. It makes me sick.
Don't think the Bo Diddley stomp really matters here. He explains the half time shuffle perfectly. And before even attempting the Rosanna shuffle it's essential that you understand the Purdie shuffle, which he is basically playing here. This is the backbone of the Rosanna shuffle! He's not playing it wrong at all since he's explaining the idea behind it, not the actual shuffle.
@keepntyme I agree with you totally. The guy is an ass. Jeff clearly states the presence of Bo Diddly stomp. I mentioned that to this guy and all he could say was "your spelling it wrong" lol What a loser.

why does everyone feel the need to re-explain this beat when the creator HIMSELF has a video on youtube explaining how to do it? I mean really?

@jerkass411 agree!

Well, Jeff's explanation wasn't all that thorough.
Catmangamer 3 months ago
@Catmangamer That's probably true, but its a pretty easy beat to hear. I just don't think it needed to be explained in much greater detail.

@chefjimmie1 I thought the point of learning a certain drum beat was to learn it exactly how it was intended to be or " interpreted".
