Been hearin this man since 1965 and wishin he was still with us...and wish I could sit right next to him. We share the same state of Missiiisippi and I don't thank nobody else can carry his drawers.
I just thought I would make the comment that in later recordings, like the one I have from a live 1965 recording at Oberlin College, John removed the lyrics about 'grab a gun and kill my baby'.
Thanks for posting this! For some odd reason, I was thinking about him today. I have an old double LP album (which is mostly live, and has what I think is a better recording of this song). So I decided to check and see what might be here...I think he's great and this is a great song.
lol...I can't say its inspirational....That would be like saying I want to grab a gun and kill my baby too. Its a twisty ragtime blues song. I like it!
@Ada1613 I totally agree this man is amazing! It sucks to know that no one has heard of him because a lot of the bands in the 30's and 40's took Hurt's credit. He's a legend in my book!!! :)
this song finishes in a different key than it starts!! very apparent, yet no obvious key change during the song. bit weird me thinks...................
I love this song so much! Proof that there is still real music, but it is a shame that most of those musicians aren't with us today. RIP Mississippi John Hurt and Johnny Cash.
On the surface this sounds like a really laid back song. But then you listen to the words and it's all paranoia and murderous threats. You gotta love the contradiction of it.

He did this song and "You Are My Sunshine" in early 1964 on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. Is that video around? Has anyone seen it?
