I love this - haven't heard it for a long long while. I mainly appreciate it because of the long instrumental break in the middle which really shows off the musicianship of both Karen & Richard in drums and keyboards respectively, but for their accompanying band. Really great tune.
Not that I know of, did they do this live. I am sure they must have in the early days but wasn't recorded, even though apparently RC recorded every concert...
I adooooore the first half of this song (I really don't care about the second half) but the song is worth it for those beautiful lyrics and melody. It's divine, I adore it. Long live the Carpenters!!!
@improvguru Raindrops Falling On My Head was a huge song, but Karen, and Richard put the team of Bacharach & David on my radar. Close To You was my first Carpenter's cassette I ever owned circa 1971. Another Song was the last song on side two, and certainly grabbed my attention. The entire tape has so much depth. Crescent Noon, and Maybe It's You, are so full of emotion like many of their pieces as years progressed their music got even better.
The Carpenters had a reputation for having a wholesome, all-American appearance but in some of these pics (especially 1:02 and 1:29) they look like terrible, freakish creautres, a grisly reminder of everything that was wrong with the 70s. This song's creepiness only makes it worse in my view.
A few comments: There is a Turkish sound to this, also. They never performed this song live to my knowledge. KC played bass on some songs on their first album, "Ticket to Ride".
ooops... my bad. i guess the shirt said "lead sister". my apologies. i still like the shirt, though. no need to throw insults. that's what i get for drinkin beer all nite and watchin/listenin to stuff on youtube. and btw, your assumption is correct.... YES MASSUR... I'S CAN READ! I BE KNOWIN MY ABC'S
Only 3 when KC left us eh Eric? You're a mere slip of a lad eh new friend LOL. Never mind about that, you clearly have a magnificent ear for quality. Perhaps you play a musical instrument? You know of course that KC not only played percussion player but she was a highly accomplished bass player as well.
Try listening to RC's arrangment of "From this moment on" (it's on the tube) and let us all know what you think.
Woah, she played bass too? That's news to me. I'l;l have to give a listen to that other song.
As for me, drums was the first thing I tried doing, not least because of Miss Carpenter here. My main focus is guitar, but I also play bass & keyboards (the last being "hallf-desirable"). I sing too, but my guitar playing is my strength.
@guv07 I guess I knew she could play bass, too. She played the xylophones on Boat to Sail, right? But where did she play the bass? From this moment on?
Thanks so much for posting! I've always loved this song so much; it really shows off Richard's arranging talent. Now I'm going to listen to Crescent Noon!!!
Anyone here who has not bought the Close to You remastered cd, please order it. It's one of the greatest albums ever recorded, now made even better with new technology.
This is from their 2nd album. Karen's early voice (which she didn't like), to me, is her best. She has that yearning sound in her voice. Her phrasing is unique, and beautiful. I just can't think of another singer who can match Karen's vocal quality.
I don't think I've ever heard this song before. You are doing such a great job with your Carpenter creations, picking rare songs and photos not already in mass supply on youtube.
I wish this song continued as it began; I especially like the special tone Karen used to sing the first part. You might say the ending is jazz. Thanks for posting it.
absolute genius.
liked and favourited

This is my favorite vocal of all Carpenters song, and I just love Karen's percussion. She was a phenomenal drummer.

it is the epitome of the 70's. when instruments were learned and played. with other instruments and musicians.

her highs are so pretty, just as her lows are so amazing. i look at her and ask myself, "where does that voice come from?!"

Este debe ser el tema más psicodélico de los Carpenters.

this song, it sounds so dark, but it dose not use any EMO sounds we hear to today that we associate with dark music.
it shows how well the carpenters could perform

This song and Karen's drums at the end were what made it clear to me I had to be a musician. Start it at 2:20, and you'll know what I mean.
Granted, I've always loved her voice, but I was especially blown away by her ability to sing and play simultaneously.

Absolutely right-- Karen's vocals were dark, honest and earnest then, a refreshing change to all others in her day.
I used to have this drum solo memorized as a teenager, and drove my neighbors crazy playing it!
