Husker du is one of my favorite bands and I learned to play all their songs when I was in high school and all, but one thing that kills me to this day is that Greg Norton, the guy who looks the most like a gay, is actually the only heterosexual of the band.
all you hate mongers can go to hell. why don't you just try to enjoy the music and leave it at that instead of spewing your petty hatred and ignorance. i suspect you are not man enough or comfortable with your own person, so you must attack others to make up for your shortcomings.
Sexual orientation has never been more irrelevant. Husker du were among the true groundbreakers of "alt rock" and should have been as big as Nirvana. Some of the most spectacular shows I ever saw were by this group, For older rockers, think of the Who without Daltry.
I don't think Husker Du pissed it all away by any means. They are indeed one of the greatest bands in the history of rock music. And they showed such a tremendous progression on each album. In the words of John Lennon, "it's all there."
Wow. It looks like they had a lot of fun together before they got so serious about doing lots of drugs and hating each other. (Sorry, but it is a little irritating to have one of the greatest American bands in the history of rock music kind of piss away what they could have done.)
@jackal59 I feel they could have been much bigger if they chose to release their most accessible album(Flip Your Wig) on Warner rather than SST(It was their choice). At times it seemed like they wanted popularity, and other times it seemed like they just wanted to do whatever they do.
And yeah, I, too am irritated that Bob and Grant pretty much hated each other. But I do find it oddly fascinating they lasted until 1987.
I hope somebody mentioned they did this song because A) MTM show was set in Minneapolis and B) it was written by Bobby Fuller, best know for I Fought The Law and the Law Won!
@wallofvideo Sonny Curtis wrote both this song, and "I Fought The Law". He was one of Buddy Holly's Crickets (for a brief time) and Bobby Fuller was a huge Buddy fan.
I always loved this cover. Never saw the video before. I think it is strange, looking at several youtube Husker Du videos this evening, that so many people comment on the fact that Bob and Grant were/are gay. Who cares? I was a big fan in the 80's, and I never knew then. I am sure lots of people knew, but I didn't. I found out when Bob 'came out', when, around 1990? But it didn't matter then, or now. Why do people care?
they recorded this song because Rhoda Morgenstern was Bob Mould's cousin (she's not any more, after the surgery) and she said, "Hey, there's a really cool song about my friend Mary, you know, the one who used to be a duck when she thought her name was Gwen? You guys should make a record of that song." And the guys in Husker Du said, "Thanks, Rhoda, that's a great idea. Do you have any more of those cookies?"
Judgemental cunts make me ashamed to be christian. Who gives a fuck if you're gay, I think God probably cares more about all the terrorists and pedos and shit than adults in consensual relationships. And who fucking cares anyway, shut yer gob and listen to the music.
Pat Robertson used to have the biggest hard-on for these guys as Devil worshippers. I remember my dad watching PR's program "700 Club" and the guy would rag and rag on them. I still don't know why...Love is All Around You? I guess that does go against the grain of the Neo Fake Christian movement in the US. Maybe if HD said, bomb and kill everyone around you, especially if they are Amerindians, Asians, or Africans, it'd be OK. Enlighten me, please.
My favorite band of all time and this song is a lot of fun. Their covers of "Love is All Around", "Eight Miles High" and "Ticket to Ride" are genius and it's amazing that they would even *think* to cover them.
But I have to say it...
Does anybody else notice how Bob resembles the cartoon character "Baby Huey"?
I absolutely love the vocals on this song!!!I met Bob Mould in the 80's...he was (and still is) a truly nice guy...musical genius and all..I even ate pizza with him at his house..it was awesome!!!!I saw the game box for "Husker Du" laying on the floor...I wish I had a video camera then..I could have captured that wonderful day for prosperity..Husker Du rocks and who cares what anyone is doing in bed or with whom...as long as the music touches your soul? I for one will always be grateful to Bob!
Thanks for the correction, but now that I'm thinking about it, I probably could have gotten big bucks for pictures of that day too...hehehehe, yes I am blessed!!!!!! And now I'm hungry for PIZZA!!!!!!
It's sad that this great band had to end prematurely due to personal differences just two years after this release. Right here, it looked like they were the best of friends, really enjoying each other's company.
Why does it matter that there were gay people in the band? And I found it hilarious that you asked someone if they lived in the Bible belt because they were talking about your taste in music when you're the one making homophobic comments.
@Sweetashanni - You're entitled to feel that way up to and then abruptly stopping at the point where it impacts on someone else's life - and then you're not. :) In other words, if you don't want to have a same-sex relationship, then don't.
@2666ification aww bless you. go do your mum you inbred hick. as long as the music is good what does sexuality have to do with anything. anyway sorry to disturb you. you can put your white robe back on now
I read all the comments here, and you know, I found the majority of the BULL SHIT talk is on sexuality. As a musician myself, I find that completely mind-boggling that people, after what Husker Du did and meant to music, can only disrespect them for something completely unimportant. They are worth of your respect, assholes.
Man, what a great effing band. In a perfect world, they would have sold a ton of records. Instead, they merely heavily influenced later bands who made a bunch of money.
Do you? It's not a very masculine song but I dare you to look at anything on Zen Arcade and say that these guys are pussies right? BTW - I'd guarantee that any guy in that band would kick your ass!
Well my friend, I like all kinds of music... even King Crimson but I wouldn't tell you what to listen to. You must live in the Bible belt right? I'd bet you're from Arkansas and have a mustache. Tell me I'm wrong
It's moderately ill-advised to use the word 'faggot' in a Husker Du-related thread, even if you were trying to make some kind of ironic point (it's actually ill-advised even in, oh, a Mel Gibson video).;)
I'm far from PC (among other things, I am opposed to same-sex AND opposite-sex marriage, and think there should be MORE gay serial killers in movies...I'm surprised there aren't...), but, honestly, if you don't see why using the term 'faggot' in a Husker Du video is ill-advised, then, really...

I wonder why they didn't sing the 2nd verse. 'Goes something like this.....
"How will you make it on your own
This world is pretty big, and girl this time you're on your own
But it's time to do some living
It's time to let someone else do the giving"
We play this song in a band in Omaha, and the crowd always seems to like it quite a bit.
