That's a pity: she had one of the most beautiful voices in the history of opera singers, but in this particular occasion she seems to be bored... more or less like «ok, I don't like this Aria, but I've to sing it 'cause the public does... so, here we are guys!». Sad...
@dziady1 you forget Puccini is verismo and NOT bel canto. What counts in this case are transmitted emotions. If you want verismo it is Callas, very simple: the more you feel it is Callas and the less you feel it is Tebaldi. This rendition is one of the poorest I have heard from Tebaldi, however in the 50s (before her crisis) she had also some great moments in verismo Operas. Nice to "see" you again:)
@David45NV1 While this Tebaldi is not the best rendition , neither is the yowling of Callas .
Very few singers manage this aria for its subtleness and verismo does not mean
you have to tear the work to shreds and pieces though that seems to please
the gallery crowd at La Scala . A singer that pleased me more than these two
was Stratas -I suppose it is all a matter of musical knowledge and taste .For all her wobble and off pitch screaming some find Callas great -go figure .
@dziady1 Callas and Caruso are beyond any YT discussion. Comparing Stratas with Tebaldi and Callas in this role is as absurd as comparing Graham Clark with Corelli as Rodolfo in La Boheme. Stratas qualities for this role are less than middle class. Vocally, she was an overrated average soubrette.
@David45NV1 Bringing in Caruso is absurd unless you heard him live . Having heard all the other singers live it was always a great pleasure to hear Stratas after the yowling
and screaming Callas . Corelli was a dreadful bore .
@dziady1 I just did and I thank you for the hint. It is one of the most beautiful renditions I have heard. She is wonderful! and unique! She is a true Artist!
@dziady1 Gerard Souzay is one of my favorites concert singers. his sense for style, his nobleness, vocal culture and cultivated presence are attributes which can not be found today. I became familiar with Souzay after I attended a concert in Zürich about 30 years ago with Francisco Araiza singing Faure and Ravel songs and again ten years later in Venice. I found a big similarity between the two Artists.
Callas was and still is "the one". Is a fact. But both Tebaldi and Caballé comprise, with Callas, what many musicians call "Le tre divine". It is a voice to be admired in anyway.
She's singing it out of time, this performance is far too fast, she's racing through it which gives it an uncomfortably frantic feel, I actually felt anxious and out of breath just listening to this, it's really not good. Timing is so important. If you hear Maria Callas or even Elizabeth Schwarzkopf sing this you can hear how much better they are - there's no comparison.
She honors the composer. There could not be a more dignified musical performance. And I'm not a part of that evil faggy battle between Callas and her. I'm unprejudiced and this is stunning. Why does she have to infuse false passion into a little aria where shes playing a little game with her father? So most of you even know what this aria is about?
this is a question you had to ask to Arturo Toscanini another piece of stupid and incompetent man. I don't understand why nobody asked your opinion before talking.
@rubbermodel How? can you organize spiristic session with him ?
He was a conductor from the 40's with that kind of melodramatic taste famous not only for his volatile character but for being an anti-fascist,
Today you can find a dozen like him and at least 6 better conductors than him that would not allow an out of tune soprano like Tebaldi to enter an opera house.
She was an excellent soprano but the only reason why she is known in the world is because of Maria Callas La Divina.... she is kind of a by product of her history... sort like Salieri and Mozart...
Love Callas forever... It is funny that she is even important for all those haters... that are envious of her (voice, devotion to music, talent, fame, recognition and the love and admiration of all her fans around the world and from many generations...
I want to agree yet disagree as well! I love Callas, Kanawa, Tebaldi, and Caballe; but my absolute favorite goes a woman by the name of Mirella Freni.
Freni's timbre and sense of phrasing is unmatched and with her gifted voice she became the favorite singer of a little composer by the name of HERBERT VON KARAJAN. Her role as Cho-Cho San in Madama Butterfly is unmatched. She out shined her opposite- Placido Domingo.

@singer101 If one cares at all about beauty when it comes to voice, then Tebaldi holds the prize. How convenient of La Divina to not value beauty when it comes to voice.
Although the tempo is a bit brisk this is perfect vocal technique. Her upper register is in proportion with the middle voice and she NEVER over opens her mouth...And it is all heart and poetry...the greatest ever....when she signed records at King Karol in Manhattan there was a line around the block and it was on the 11 o clock news WPIX with Chuck Scarborough and why not..she touched so many music lovers...
For me, Tebaldi's voice is a little too mature for this aria. In addition she doesn't sound like a spoiled fifteen-year-old girl begging to her father. Nevertheless I love her timbre and style anyway.

Probabilmente neppure annoiata semplicemente inespressiva
i've got this on disc in my home she sang this the best as well lets face it she is the graitest, i no some people like callas best but renata had the better voice amblerificatoin
@amblerificatoin My mother always told me so, and though I still prefer callas, I like Tebaldi more and more everyday. Callas is more a legend and Tebaldi is more human, and we all like drama I guess!
Well, I am 68 years old, but I don't feel like a old man. I remember my very first Tebaldi performance at the Met, 1958 BUTTERFLY. I was 16 and in LOVE.. Little did I realize that night, that 8 years I would meet Renata and become a very close friend. Many dinners, parties and wonderful times were shared with this beautiful woman. She called me from her home in San Marco in 1998 and invited us to come to Italy for her birthday. I miss her friendship and the feel of her hand and her smile.
I listened to this performance & read many of the comments posted here & have to conclude that few people will ever understand that what someone likes is what they like & that's all there is to it. It's not a moral issue regardless of the passion that so many people demonstrate in expressing their opinions.
Personally, I don't care for this rendition. The lady has skills, no doubt. I just don't like it. See, that's nothing but an opinion. Ya'll be sure to tell me how deficient I am!
@deezynar You yourself said "what someone likes is what they like" and I guess the same applies to those who dislike, that, if you are one of those few people you refer to, who may understand this! Sometimes is best to keep an opinion more private or share it with friends instead of posting it in a public site, referring to such an incredible opera legend.
Please read the comments posted to this video, the vitriol is beyond the significance of the subject. My comment was designed to shame people into a more genteel tone. Civility is more important than opera & it is especially ironic that opera fans would behave so boorishly.
Someone once said that you must have three things to succeed in opera: Voice, voice, and voice. Even Maria Callas once said that she wished that she (Maria) had Tebaldi's voice. Tebaldi's voice was one of the wonders of the operatic world. Those who truly love the human voice will always listen to her. She and her unique sound will never never become passe.
Ninguna voz trasmite amor como la voz de Renata Tebaldi, es de hacer notar que esta es una grabación de 1965 y sigue tan radiante como en los cincuenta.
I wonder sometimes if people dislike Sarah Brightman just because she is popular. Anyway... Tebaldi's interpretation was mind blowing, very beautiful.
@tdreamer25 No its not because she is "popular" whatever that means. It is because this is an opera singer(a discipline that takes years and dedication to master) and Sarah Brightman has a small falsetto voice which is projected by means of microphones either taped to the side of her face. (She is a popular "pop" singer not an opera singer). Ergo, comments regarding Ms Brightman really have no place on this thread really because no serious opera lover has ever heard of her.
@kamikazekate I understand your point, but saying that no serious opera lover has ever heard of her sounds pretentious. This is a Renata Tebaldi video, It's better to not compare two singers that deserve all my respect.
I thought Streich was unsurpassable in this .Her taste and refined way but this has got some heart too.Not overdone.Maybe intimeCaballe 's way will make sense! But it is a young girl trying to cajole her dad so only so much it aint love.
It would be a mistake to make the aria longer and more dramatic if it is sang as part of the whole opera. But in a recital, the singers are supposed to show off their talent, I think they're free to interpret it in their own manner, even if it doesn't tell the same story as the libretto.
Look at where the mic's are to pick up her sound. NOT in her face. Up above and away from her. Not like today where it is all up in their face and enhanced.
Absolutle beautiful. But one thing. Why is it that she always sings it so fast? I've heard a lot of versions of this aria with her and they all seem a little to fast. Am I right? I know it's the conductor's decision, but... why?
tebaldi sings this aria in this maner always because it is not a sad or over long doom laden piece but a young girl who is trying to wrap her father round her little finger. So when the soprano makes this little song last more than 5 minutes, they have and thus make you, Miss The Point!!!!
Renata Tebaldi has one of the most exquisite voices for Puccini Arias...smooth as cream, polished like silver. I can't get enough of her.
When my kids were small and fussing in the car, we put Renata's performance of O Mio Babbino Caro (from Pavaroti's collection of Arias) on the CD player and the kids quited down with a look of blissful wonder on their faces. Magic.
@Jangle2007 Being totally honest I think none sings "O mio bambino caro" as she does ! her voice is like a fairy and still powerful, she can being ; Suicidio! and still her voice will sound so feminine, ethereal and still earthy. I have never be part of the Maria & Tebaldi game, even though I am a blind fan of Callas, I believe that they were two different planets. Tebaldi's voice is incomparable. I love Tebaldi's Madalena from Andrea Chenier, I guess we are the lucky for having both!
@Jangle2007 well said. Renata reigns at top always. only got to hear her live about 3 time. wont forget her comback recital at carnige hall about 73. she will always remain my favorite . thanks for her recordings
my first time to hear her live was as tosca at lyric chicago
but well they are humans, they make, made and will make mistakes in his artistical live, they are just like us. I mind, they earn their living practice an art -a little difficult-. you can make an analogy, it's like if you know me because I earn my living be a lawyer and I'm famous for that, and you ask me for an autograph and you want to know my life, but there are some cases that I must defend a potential rapist, or a thief or something goes wrong for me in a case, we should not idealize
She is one of the greatest singers that has ever existed...
And I don't know why do the people discuss? I mind, the art it's something special, it's one of the elements that mades the human been. I think that discussing surplus, why do we move our conflicts to the art? we're disrespect it. and beside the art it's subjective, probably one of you don't like Monserrat, but I like her and others do but others don't. Well, there are some mistakes of the artists -I know-..
If you're watching Renata Tebaldi clips there is no need for you to know who Sarah Brightman is. There is no need for you to punish yourself by listening to Sarah Brightman.
@damianjb1 I like Sarah Brightman's voice, it's not perfect... but that gives it a certain something which keeps me listening. She is a main influence getting me into classical music and opera (Surely you can't fault her in Phantom, yes, yes, I know it wasn't an opera...) Nobody has a perfect voice, it all comes down to personal preference, though Callas, Tebaldi, Sutherland, Battle and Durbin are as close as we're going to hear I think. Ah, right, I feel old now chatting about opera haha =] x
@damianjb1 Sarah Brightman is a very fine singer OPERA SNOB; why do you douchebags infect the internet like a computer virus--the pet hates: every cross over artist in history?
@damianjb1 OH MY GOD! I love you so much for saying this! Thanks as well as "Il Divo and Josh Groban will say Andrea Boccelli but there is something about his voice tenderness but THANKS!
@damianjb1 oh goodness THANK YOU!!! Thats what I just finished putting on facebook for my friends who know nothing of opera and think Sarah Brightman is the shit. Its really annoying. I think she is a fine singer but not opera material...
i love this song and i love Tebaldi but the first person i ever heard sing O Mio Babbino Caro was Maria Callas and it just stuck in my head. they both have a different way of doing it but both ways are beautiful. And in the looks department i would have to say in my opinion Maria Callas is more attractive to me. something about her reminds me a little of Audrey Hepbern and i think Audrey is stunning. but Renata is still a gorgeous woman.
otra vez no me entiendes.
No more sopranos like her, the colour , the timbre the equality and this particular way of singing, , We cannot compare with Callas, Maria was something great and different. Alas, both missing.
this is a solid rendition but i still think Renee Fleming's version is the best out there as she floats her voice really well and you really have a emotional connection to it which makes her stand out even more plus i think Renee Fleming floats her voice flawlessly on some parts of the song that sends chills down your spine ;)
yes, much better than Caballé who abuses of the pianissimos, never written by maestro Puccini, there is just one, " oh Dio" Brava Renée. A great artist. RENATA was exception for the colour of her voice.
we are again in a desagreetment here, I admit that Tebaldi´s voice was all quality but Montserrat Caballé has the most beautiful soprano voice ever. The had 2 different singing style, nevertheless Tebaldi here is out of this world. Regards.
But there are other recordings of her singing this aria - and they are lovely. She was a most wonderful singer, passionate and vibrant. She was not as famous as she was for nothing.
Are you agreeing with me or saying you think my comment is wrong?
I think Renata Tebaldi - as I said in my post - was a truly fabulous singer. I have a recording of her singing Mimi in Boheme. Listening to it is a sublime experience.
Truly operatic and yet, feminine.

mistakenly think her voice was the best.
For quality, power and richness, the voices of singers like Flagstad and Tebaldi would be ranked among the very best.

@1garyt i think sarah brightman is a good singer however she really hasnt the quality voice or vocal weight for opera.

Callas is a way better! Therefore Callas is "The Best Soprano That Ever Lived".

@pedrofribeiro hmm I kind of dont like the emphasis callas puts on the annunciation of her syllables and words... I like tebaldi's fluidity better.

Probabilmente neppure annoiata semplicemente inespressiva

Ya'll be sure to tell me how deficient I am!
deezynar 1 year ago
@deezynar You yourself said "what someone likes is what they like" and I guess the same applies to those who dislike, that, if you are one of those few people you refer to, who may understand this! Sometimes is best to keep an opinion more private or share it with friends instead of posting it in a public site, referring to such an incredible opera legend.
leonardouy 1 year ago
@leonardouy
Please read the comments posted to this video, the vitriol is beyond the significance of the subject. My comment was designed to shame people into a more genteel tone. Civility is more important than opera & it is especially ironic that opera fans would behave so boorishly.

this performance is much better than the one from the recital!

theSeraphina777 1 year ago

Anyway... Tebaldi's interpretation was mind blowing, very beautiful.
tdreamer25 1 year ago

It would be a mistake to make the aria longer and more dramatic if it is sang as part of the whole opera. But in a recital, the singers are supposed to show off their talent, I think they're free to interpret it in their own manner, even if it doesn't tell the same story as the libretto.

svetadarling 2 years ago
Absolutle beautiful. But one thing. Why is it that she always sings it so fast? I've heard a lot of versions of this aria with her and they all seem a little to fast. Am I right? I know it's the conductor's decision, but... why?
orfeo2003 2 years ago 4
tebaldi sings this aria in this maner always because it is not a sad or over long doom laden piece but a young girl who is trying to wrap her father round her little finger.

Magic.
Jangle2007 2 years ago 36
@Jangle2007 Being totally honest I think none sings "O mio bambino caro" as she does ! her voice is like a fairy and still powerful, she can being ; Suicidio! and still her voice will sound so feminine, ethereal and still earthy. I have never be part of the Maria & Tebaldi game, even though I am a blind fan of Callas, I believe that they were two different planets. Tebaldi's voice is incomparable. I love Tebaldi's Madalena from Andrea Chenier, I guess we are the lucky for having both!

peque1204 2 years ago
but well they are humans, they make, made and will make mistakes in his artistical live, they are just like us. I mind, they earn their living practice an art -a little difficult-. you can make an analogy, it's like if you know me because I earn my living be a lawyer and I'm famous for that, and you ask me for an autograph and you want to know my life, but there are some cases that I must defend a potential rapist, or a thief or something goes wrong for me in a case, we should not idealize
peque1204 2 years ago
She is one of the greatest singers that has ever existed...
And I don't know why do the people discuss? I mind, the art it's something special, it's one of the elements that mades the human been. I think that discussing surplus, why do we move our conflicts to the art? we're disrespect it. and beside the art it's subjective, probably one of you don't like Monserrat, but I like her and others do but others don't. Well, there are some mistakes of the artists -I know-..

@damianjb1 Ha, your comment is so funny. But unfortunately true!

Really, you think Tebaldi was prettier than Callas?? I think Callas was a stunning woman, and she had the magnetism that all great actors have.

Actually I think Callas was a wee bit overrated in the looks dept. Bit more "glamorous" then Tebaldi perhaps but I prefer Tebaldi's looks personally.
ShawDAMAN 2 years ago
i love this song and i love Tebaldi but the first person i ever heard sing O Mio Babbino Caro was Maria Callas and it just stuck in my head. they both have a different way of doing it but both ways are beautiful. And in the looks department i would have to say in my opinion Maria Callas is more attractive to me. something about her reminds me a little of Audrey Hepbern and i think Audrey is stunning. but Renata is still a gorgeous woman.
sceneaddict032106 2 years ago 3
The Hepburn look was created quite consciously on Maria's part. She admired Audrey. And it suited her =)

otra vez no me entiendes.
