  • @shaykai when you throw your right hook you do one of two very bad things you either lift your front foot off the floor or you bring your back foot towards the front one if you miss and your opponent connects at that point you'll lose your balance and possibly hit the deck :/

  • let u land one of your punches like that your going hurt your wrist...go back to basics...throw from your chin and bring it back start there...any coach would tell you that if you can hit them they can and will hit you back.

  • @1evo2h8 You know it,s funny, when I shadowbox my wrist does bend a bit, but when I spar or hit the heavy bag it doesn't in the slightest. I'm not sure why this is. I think its because when I shadowbox my fists are pretty loose since there is no reason for them to tighten up as they brace for impact. I've tried shadowboxing with 'tight fists' and it is wholly uncomfortable and makes me focus too much on the hand and not enough on the shoulder/hips.

  • @shaykai That's the way it should be. I train in Wing Chun Kung Fu as well as boxing. In Wing Chun, we are taught to completely release your energy when air punching and the only way to do that is to stay relaxed. When we want impact, we use heavy bags, focus mitts, and the Wing Chun wallbag. But because we practice staying relaxed, we only tense up at the moment of impact. These same principles have carried over into my boxing training as well. So you definitely have the right idea. Nice video!

  • @shaykai If you ever do, Wing Chun would be the perfect one to comliment boxing. Some of the other systems, while very good in their own right, are too different from boxing to be able to cross train.

  • @eddy1337 you know I have noticed that as well, i'm not sure why it looks like that. I know when I hit the bag or my sparring partner my wrists never hurt and they are always straight. It might be because i'm trying to stay so loose when I shadow box, I'm not sure.

  • @eddy1337 Haha, I've actually gotten worse. Life got in the way and I pretty much stopped sparring and training for about 3-4 months. I'm just getting back into it now, but I lost around 10 lbs in muscle that I need to build back up! Such a pain in the ass, but I'll get back to my target weight soon. Have you thought about doing the golden gloves or anything? Are you located in the USA?

  • @shaykai ah shit that sounds painful.. I hate it when I'm paused for more than 2 weeks.. you feel so shitty haha. after 4 months it has to be hard to get to your old level. I'm 23 now and I dont even know if I should do competitions. I'm boxing now for 5-6month and my trainer says that I have talent and should try it. But I dont know yet. I'm located in Dortmund, Germany :D You would be a nice sparring partner.. my current sparring partner is like 20cm shorter.. :x

  • i read on your comment reply that you do krav maga...i was wondering how intense it is and if it is something a tennager can learn or if its better for an older person (old as in the 20's) to learn....

  • @nos0323 Teenagers can learn it. I would say if you are 15 or 16 at least then that's a good age to start. I had a 17 year old regularly kick my ass when I went to Krav a lot.

    cause i dont have alot of stamina even though i do parkour and freerunning...

  • @nos0323 Yeah it's pretty intense, but you don't need a whole lot of stamina for it. I mean, you need some obviously, but my Ex-girlfriend took it with me and she had really bad asthma and she was able to do it. I'm sure if you do freerunning and stuff that you will be a natural at it.

  • Hey Ben for a workout routine i would highly recomend the p90x program, it does a tremendous amount of improvement to all your muscle groups and also gives you some flexibility, one of my friends uses it for training for cage fights it works and is somewhat easy. You should really look into it.

  • I dont know if you already do this or not but you should definately look into boxing or martial arts of some sort. I could see you training to be an mma fighter

  • Hehe thanks Superman. I actually do train in boxing, Jiu Jitsu, and Krav Maga. I haven't competed yet, but I plan on going for the 2010 Golden gloves in San Francisco next march.

  • @leafsfan9917 Nope, I missed it this year. Life got in the way. Hopefully next year, or maybe some amateur kickboxing sometime this year.

  • @shaykai yeah, if you do mabye you should get someone to film it, I think you would do well, I know you probably dont want advice but I will throw my oppinon in anyway, you seem to weave a lot which is great, but try to move quickly on your feet and slip punches, you seem quick enough to be effective and in compitition it will give you great angles to throw some relitivley undefended punches

  • @leafsfan9917 I always willing to take critiques :) my footwork is something I am constantly working on. It's never any good, but it's slowly getting better. It's going to be even more important when I start throwing kicks too.

  • @shaykai I would take it as a complement, you seem to be quick and if you could use that effectivley you would be even better, I have no dout that you would win the golden gloves tournement if you entered it

  • cool workout, i shadow box the machine i run at work all the time, my buddy has a 2700 lb farmall tractor i can push/pull around when i get bored too, good for the legs i guess "my baby is asleep" ....my friend has one of them , an i can run the damn weedwacker when she's asleep.

  • lol I know! It was actually a lady that did so. I am constantly surprised at how many people have no problem approaching me. I'm usually wearing a motorcycle jacket and sporting the 'hawk. I guess I'm not as intimidating as I'd like to believe :P

  • nice, btw having ur hands covered in blisters is bad but it also means u will have calisus which r great once u have them.....i do a lot of work swing a 15pnd sledge about 250 times a day for work and a ton of other shit and they help lol some people say gloves r for pussies

  • nice vid man, should work on your legs aswell people underestimate kicks in a fight tbh - shadow boxings good but the bag would be better as it helps to strengthen your fist and wrist if you end up in fights

  • Most of the really good boxers I know shadowbox 3-4x more than they work the heavy bag so I am trying to emulate them. I find that working the heavy bag too much really decreases your sparring effectiveness even if it does increase your strength slightly. Although the way I train is by no means the best way to train, its just the best way for me :)

  • dont get me wrong shadow boxings really good in all the martial arts ive done you do it in there its very useful was just saying that the bag helps :P

    the shoulin monks (ithink) get big book of paper and tie it to a wall and punch that non stop for x amount of time and thats to strengthen there hands and wrist aswell so its helpful to do that in my opinion

    but yer i agree whatever is best for you is what you should do :P

  • old redwoods apparently increase ur property value so make sure to keep that tree! haha nice vid. i normally just do pull ups and chop wood with my axe.. it actually gets u sweating quite hard if u do enough of it!

  • You know, you don't need an actual sledgehammer.

    Idk if you've ever heard of Matt Furey, but he recommends in his book, Combat Conditioning, an exercise from Shuai Chiao (hope i got it right) called bowing... its basically like swinging your clenched fists together as a hammer, combined with going up on your toes and stretching down between your legs...it's hard to explain but its a great exercise that REALLY gets you huffing and puffing.

  • It always feels a little weird when you first start to shadowbox, but it really helps with your sparring a lot more than the heavy bag does. I highly recommend it! I try and shadowbox 3 rounds for every 1 round of heavy bag work.
