i think the tone in her voice is some kind of dark but i like it so much how she transports the strong feeling. the first violetta i hear wich is really dying and feeling the pain.
Yet another example of the exquisite Violetta of the great Virginia Zeani. She sings with absolutely beautiful tone injected with passionate vocal acting. There is no doubting that this wonderful artist is the definitive Violetta of our time!
Glorious, glorious singing and vocal acting. Heart-rending performance and great singing on every level. Here in particular you can tell she was a student, however brief of the great Pertile.
So much love given, and so much love returned. Nothing beats the spontaneity of a live moment, where a magical experience is created out of thin air. Wow, that was simply fantastic! Thank you so much for sharing this.
from Facebook: That makes me weep. There is so much sadness and tenderness in her voice, no anger. I think the lisbon traviata [Callas] which I've listened to so many times really imprinted in me an association of latent anger with this scene. But Z's Violetta here is so quiet and womanly. It touches on a released spirituality in the role. Callas can be like a prophet railing at God in the desert-- struggling against her inevitable calling--, but Zeani is lovingly dying for our sins. Brava.
@CharlotteinWeimar This is sooooooo right Yv.... er.. Charlotte ;) Callas and Zeani have two different ways of portraying Violetta... Both make me cry... For two different reasons.. But this performance is probably more intense than any other Traviatas.. Especially when Alfredo comes in..!!!! BRAVA ZEANI!!!
p.s. We met last Thursday I was having a lesson, I'm the baritone from Canada :) Say Hi to Grand-Mamy Virginia and tell her this made me cry ok? thanks :)
Thank you for your quick reply. I didn't know they had prompters in the big opera houses. Thank you also for posting this beautiful live performance. I love how the crowd go wild! Can I ask, do you have a favourite version of 'O, Don fatale'? If so, could you post? I am searching for the ultimate performance of this aria!
It is the prompter, positioned in the prompt box, centre stage, at the feet of the singers and much closer to them than the conductor. In fact when you are on stage in as large an opera house as the Met, the prompter is an absolutely vital link in keeping everything running smoothly.
The most emotionally infused, genuinely heartrending rendition of Violetta imaginable! Zeani did not portray this role; she inhabited it! With her own, very special vocal and visual magic she had the ability to make one actually believe the unbelievable!
Thank you, thank you, thank you, dear Charlotte. Your "sharing job" is really wonderful. And you alone make a better job than all the big majors together...
Virginia Zeani is one of the best Romanian sopranos ever. Her voice is a rarity even nowdays. She was also Angela Gheorghiu's idol. I was blessed to see Traviatta during my years in Bucuresti.
I have rarely have such incredble emotions as during her interpretation of Adio.
Virginia Zeani is one of the great Romanian sopranos. She was in fact the idol of Angela Gheorghiu. I honestly believe she was one of the best singers ever.
Emocionante lectura de la carta! Muestra como se debe leer esa carta, todas las otras veces he escuchado una lectura que aburre pero ella hace vibrar cada fibra y la tranforma en una pequena joya.
Splendid! Absolutely splendid, emotional, touching... everything! For sure Verdi could have never imagined or hoped for this aria to be sung like this.
A more heartrending rendition of Teneste La Promessa is unimaginable. Virginia Zeani is undoubtedly the consummate actress; vocally, physically--all one. Photos of that exquisite face, green eyes filled with tears...basta!
Then desperation! Then joy! Such drama!
Thanks to CharlotteinWeimar for illustrations that capture her essence beautifully.
Brava, Virginia Zeani; and, Brava CharlotteinWeimar!
Che bella voce! What a superb performance.Indeed heartbreaking and wrought with feeling and emotion. The only rendition I like better is one by the incomparable Claudia Muzio made in the 1930's.Mille grazie for sharing this wonderful piece.Bravissima Zeani!
@CharlotteinWeimar Hello Y.. Charlotte! There are two recordings of the 1966 Zeani Traviata. One is a Broadcast and the other is the in-house (this one)
She is one of the greatest, together with Gencer and Olivero. I prefer this sopranos more than the (in my opinion !)overrated Callas en Tebaldi. They had the bad luck that C&T better relations had with the scandalpress en de recordcompanies. Nevertheless; they left us over 100 pirate CDs !
Truly the best Violeta....she's perfect...she's one of the best romanian sopranos...like Eugenia Moldoveanu ,Ileana Cotrubas,Mariana Nicolesco,Hariclea Darclee or other....
Her performance is heartbreaking indeed! It touched my soul and made me cry! Her sobs are so moving and convincing!Could you put more of this performance?
This is just too beautiful.
She resides in incredible operatic heights.
