Capcom has a few series they ditched they should try and breath some more life into. Aside from this, we also have Darkstalkers (which they didn't touch for a decade apart from remaking one of the games) and Dino Crisis (which seems a bit dead at the moment due to weak sequel for the XBOX).
I was really like games about firebrand on NES, and SNES i was don't play on gameboy. But when I was young this game was pretty hard, so I don't enjoy it, but later i was getting a lot of fun from it
is this suppose to be angryvideo game nerds counter part? if it is this is going to be a good clash and rivalry. a game critic that reviews bad games vs a game critic that reviews good games
I actually liked one of Viewtiful Joe's spin-offs, specifically Viewtiful Joe Double Trouble which just took Viewtiful Joe put him on the DS and gave him some new powers. I thought it was good though.
Personally I have to say that I prefer Gargoyle Quest II to Demon's Crest. I think the power-up progression in the first (which is obligatory and make you face every level with a proper power) is more well-thinked than in the latter, where I found myself beating the last boss whitout HALF of the power-ups... The first time I fought with him I thinked "ah, this isn't the real final boss, there will surely be a plot-twist!", and after beating him with a lot of effort, bam, the end. What?
Actually, its weird for me to say this but I have found every single item without the use of a strategy guide. I mainly found them because I liked playing each level over again because it was a lot of fun.
@BlueRise85 he's more like a satire instead of being angry and talking about shitty games he's happy and talks about great (usually underrated) games. While the nerd drinks beer to get drunk and ease his pain and shouts, the happy nerd appreciates a bottle of wine and praises the good aspects of games.
Protip: The Imp spell is amazingly effective against the otherwise frustrating slime boss in the Town Level Catacombs, so the spell system isn't a total loss.
One thing why Demon's Crest can be hard is due to most people not knowing about the weakness element available (Well, there is no life bar for bosses). Aerial gargoyle is great against airborne enemies, and Earth Gargoyle's grounded shots deal twice damage. Time & Heaven are just cheesy.
There is also the misconceptions that Claw and Buster are good, when they deal less damage than all and even his first fire weapon. Frankly, the whole fire crest is shafted.
You forgot to mention that Gargoyle's Quest II wasn't only exclusive for the NES, it was later ported to the Game Boy, but I guess you would prefer the NES version for several reasons. OH WAIT! You mentioned it near the end and said it was Japan-only. Oh well.
Firebrand did appear in Ultimate MVC 3, but you forgot to mention that Red Arremer appeared in SVC Chaos: SNK VS. Capcom for the Neo-Geo as Capcom's rival of SNK's Princess Athena from the Athena arcade.
Holy fucklord was I happy when I saw this! Demon's Crest is one of my favorite games for the SNES. If anyone has a PAL version of it, feel free to chat me up. It's really hard to find one!
"bitching about password".... tsk, kids nowadays and their quick save states and auto checkpoints every 10 sec.
The advantage with password was that you can exchange it with friends or strangers on your savestates. Also somehow it does makes you work with your pen and paper in a fun way. The most annoying password would be big and small letters. Also it adds an challenge to the game where you have to find the "guru" or game over screen where they give you the password.
If you really want to get less email about a remake of Gargoyle's Quest (because some will any way) you should say don't email at the beginning and end. Not just at the end. Because some people will email you before they finish the video.
Anyway Great review. I played all 3. Those were (and still) very fun. As always I look forward to your next review.

ive been meaning to try out this games for along time now so thanks for reminding me. that snes game looks awesome and btw the reason the items are so ridicuiosly well hidden was to make people buy thst old nintendo magazine that told you about stuff like this
@bfullstar interesting how he has multiple videos with multiples of thousands of views huh? oh! i see you have some videos! hmm.... high tens....high tens...low 100s.... now lets look back at this 23,841 shall we? you seem to misunderstand "people won't watch your videos" because you clearly don't have anyone watching yours.
@4LackOfaBetterNam3 Sure and i pronounces NES mostly as "Ness" as well but some guys get annoyed about that kind of pronounciation and there also are acronyms which you don´t just read out like USA, DNA, or USSR.
@NecrophageonIII They still do, its just their bussiness decisions that not everyone likes, but as far as making fun games, they still know what they are doing for the most part. I look foward to their new IP calles Azura's Wrath, it looks pretty cool.
@FREAKFANATIC Azura's Wrath looks pretty and all, but it also looks like God of War meets the recent Batman titles. There's far too much emphasis placed on the status quo these days, and I think that's my biggest problem. Capcom is guilty too. Then there's the myriad of awful business decisions they've been making lately (right down to the DLC-rape)...
There was a time when Capcom was my favorite developer, but in my opinion, times have changed, and they're all washed up.
@NecrophageonIII Well I don't blame you for thinking that way. To me, its all about games, so as long as Capcom and any other company still deliver, then I'll be playing them for sure.
Awesome review , as always... but the highlight of this review for me was the fact you got Ben out of retirement to guest star. The Totally Random Show was the most fucking awesome podcast ever and this review just reminds me of how much I miss it (fucking miles better than Sidescrollers and anything else out there I can find). I go back to old episodes every now and again and still get a laugh all these years later! Any chance you can get Ben to pull another Jay Z and do some more shows???
@firebrand12345 Thanks for the kind words about the show. Glad you're still enjoying it all these years later. Hopefully new shows will happen at some point as our schedules allow. :)
I like Avgn but i really appreciate dereks love and knowledge of old school classics. I played demons crest when it first came out and i loved it truly one of the greatest games on the snes
Sorry to burst your bubble Derek, but I'm fairly certain that the guy at 2:45 and 25:54 is supposed to be Arma, Phalanx' second in command, deciding to give his shot conquering the world. Otherwise, you couldn't possibly do more justice to these wonderful games. Let's indeed hope for a new game, remake or not.
The bosses were really my main issue with the game. That skeleton guy with the sword is incredibly hard, and there is no crest at that point to really help you.
Another problem I have with this game is that, although there is an overworld with the levels, most of the time, if you do them out of order, you'll just see an impossibly difficult level/boss and will have to backtrack for new abilities. The whole "non-linear progression" was poorly done, imo. Don't know If I'm just nitpicking.
Thank you so much! I didn't grow up in the NES era so I don't know many obscure games. I can't wait to play Gargoyle's Quest 2. Also, great idea about taking a picture of passwords.
I just got an NES for Christmas :) and of course I've been enjoying the blockbusters like the Super Mario Bros games, The Legend of Zelda, and Final Fantasy, and the only obscure gem I've gotten so far is Crystalis. I'm on the hunt for games like Metal Storm and Journey to Silius though. Speaking of Crystalis, I had the thought that it would have been a much better sequel to The Legend of Zelda than The Adventure of Link. I don't think Zelda II is a bad game, but has too many flaws for me.
I don't understand your logic for the megaman games. How is 1, 2 and 3 any better than 4, 5, and 6? Why do you praise capcom for 9, but hate them for 10? The classic megamans are essentially all the same game, but with different robot masters. Same goes for the X and Zero series. Are you really a megaman fan?
you prolly get this a lot derek, but have you considered making top 10 lists or whatever? something like best action-platformer or capcom games on the nes/snes, or something more original. I mean, unless you're worried that at the VERY top you'll end up with games that aren't particularly underrated, but rather well-known classics like super metroid. I totally understand that feeling, since I'm the same way with movies, music, games, etc. I think there's still potential in that idea though!
Why this episode is not showing on the HVGN episode list in RetroTV? Also the two latest "Is it really that bad" -episode are not showing themselves where they should.
I'm not spamming or I don't consider this spamming but I just want people to watch my videos. My channel is gameshowkid97. Now with all of these other awesome channels it's hard to get a few people to watch new members to youtube. Just check out my channel and leave some comments & subscribe if u think my videos are cool. BTW HVGN If the fan made Mother 4 game comes out will you review it?
@Testsubject909-Sorry. It's just that the name was brought up right out of nowhere and because of seeing this video recently mixed with seeing an Elder Scrolls Wiki page on easter eggs I thought it was neat.
About 5 min. ago, I was playing Skyrim, and I was doing a Thieves Guild quest and I was asked to steal a bottle of wine called Firebrand Wine. I just needed to tell this after watching this because I found it interesting because puts a handful of easter eggs in their games.
If you love Gargoyle's quest, try tracking down a game by the name of Kid Dracula, it's a pretty good platformer with some fun twists, and is one of the most unexpected spinoffs I've ever found.
Dude I'm so glad you reviewed these games, I've only played Demon's Crest (not even ghost and goblins) and I love it, you actually reignited my love for the game so much that I GOT to get a hard copy for myself now. Also I didn't know there was a Gargoyle's Quest sequel for the NES thanks for the education (really sad I missed though). :P
25:55 that's not firebrand that's general arma you know the boss at the end of the first level who gives you the earth crest he appears like that in the normal ending
Okay I can't tell how much I have been waiting for this to finally happen, to be honest I was almost like what took so long for this review to happen? You know just considering that THIS IS possibly one of the WAY MOST underrated series ever so I actually was expecting such review to happen early. It starts out very promising and filled me with hope as the series full beauty shall be revealed. There has a bit too much focus on the bad things. I feel like not everything needed has been said.
speaking of Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, fun fact, if Dr. Strange wins a fight against Firebrand, Strange actually says, "this gargoyle's quest...has failed" as his victory speech
@lophatjello i discovered you by watching AVGN's board james video of loopin' louie where i saw you and several other youtubers there playing the game. that must've been a hell of a day for you all, huh? other than that, i was hoping to see irategamer come along and play the game with you guys.
isn't that actually a picture of Arma that you showed @25:54, not firebrand? i think he was like some sort of demon general or something, and a boss or miniboss, i don't remember which.
I find the towns on the first two games kind of pointless. The towns don't have any shops or any items to find when you get close to big jars or something, the only thing to do is to talk to people and that's about it, there's not much else to do in those towns. The game should been just a world map with side scrolling gameplay and that's it. That's why I prefer the SNES better, no useless towns or many people to talk to, it gets staright to the point.
Holy crap, these graphics are amazing! I mean, Gargoyle's Quest 2 looks like a Super Nintendo game and Demons Crest looks like Super Turrican. If there ever was a Gargoyle's Quest 4 on N64: I swear it would look like a Dreamcast game.

Now with all of these other awesome channels it's hard to get a few people to watch new members to youtube. Just check out my channel and leave some comments & subscribe if u think my videos are cool. BTW HVGN If the fan made Mother 4 game comes out will you review it?

I wish these games would come back, correctly, and show the world how to make games once again, that are fun and challenging.

After watching this video, my avatar on PSN is now the gargoyle XD
Skyraf101 1 month ago
@Testsubject909-Sorry. It's just that the name was brought up right out of nowhere and because of seeing this video recently mixed with seeing an Elder Scrolls Wiki page on easter eggs I thought it was neat.

About 5 min. ago, I was playing Skyrim, and I was doing a Thieves Guild quest and I was asked to steal a bottle of wine called Firebrand Wine. I just needed to tell this after watching this because I found it interesting because puts a handful of easter eggs in their games.
XxStayXPositive 2 months ago
@XxStayXPositive Unfortunately just because they use the term Firebrand doesn't mean that it's an actual easter egg to this particular gargoyle.
There are multiple RPGs that have the Firebrand sword for example. For one simple reason. It is a Fire Brand. Get it?

That's not Firebrand, that's his rival Arma

If you love Gargoyle's quest, try tracking down a game by the name of Kid Dracula, it's a pretty good platformer with some fun twists, and is one of the most unexpected spinoffs I've ever found.

@VideoGameTakeOut You gotta come back to game reviewing, man!

comet46 2 months ago
25:55 that's not firebrand that's general arma you know the boss at the end of the first level who gives you the earth crest he appears like that in the normal ending
MultiTsunayoshi 2 months ago

@ShootStyleZombie hahaha, that's awesome, thanks for sharing!
lophatjello 2 months ago 4
@lophatjello The wiki didn't say anything about Firebrand originally being in ghosts and goblins you probably made a mistake
Weegeeisgoingtokillm 2 months ago
@lophatjello Plus, The gargoyle in ghosts and goblins is the red dragon guard.
Weegeeisgoingtokillm 2 months ago
@lophatjello perhaps it's foreshadowing, and that they're gonna bring back this series?

@lophatjello i discovered you by watching AVGN's board james video of loopin' louie where i saw you and several other youtubers there playing the game. that must've been a hell of a day for you all, huh? other than that, i was hoping to see irategamer come along and play the game with you guys.

Dorfian 2 months ago
isn't that actually a picture of Arma that you showed @25:54, not firebrand? i think he was like some sort of demon general or something, and a boss or miniboss, i don't remember which.

Wow! I sat through nearly a half an hour of learning about a game series that I've only heard little about and I loved it! :D Thanks HVGN! :D
StarTropicsKing 2 months ago

I got the 3DS gameboy VC gargoyles quest game on day 2 of its release in europe, its an amazeing game.
The third game is so kick ass but bosses are very hard to dodge.

I went and beat Gargoyles Crest for the first time when Firebrand was announced for UMvC3.
I really really enjoyed it, but never realised it was party of a cross-platform trilogy. I will check them out immediately, thank you sir!
