  • We Want Firebrand Back !

  • @Bajamamut dont we all

  • Capcom has a few series they ditched they should try and breath some more life into. Aside from this, we also have Darkstalkers (which they didn't touch for a decade apart from remaking one of the games) and Dino Crisis (which seems a bit dead at the moment due to weak sequel for the XBOX).

  • what is this smell... actually no, my nose is running i cant smell a thing. D:

  • Great review!!!

  • I was really like games about firebrand on NES, and SNES i was don't play on gameboy. But when I was young this game was pretty hard, so I don't enjoy it, but later i was getting a lot of fun from it

  • ONE thing at 25:54

The Demon shown is not Firebrand, its Arma.

  • THANK YOU!

I love Demon Quest for SNES and the Gameboy games

  • i think you and anvg should do a dual review kinda like good cop bad cop

  • 2:50 bottom left is Patrick!!!

  • is this suppose to be angryvideo game nerds counter part? if it is this is going to be a good clash and rivalry. a game critic that reviews bad games vs a game critic that reviews good games

  • Looks like the game had somewhat of a Zelda II influence. It definately goes of on its own due to its origionality.

  • I actually liked one of Viewtiful Joe's spin-offs, specifically Viewtiful Joe Double Trouble which just took Viewtiful Joe put him on the DS and gave him some new powers. I thought it was good though.

  • Your couch moved.

  • Personally I have to say that I prefer Gargoyle Quest II to Demon's Crest. I think the power-up progression in the first (which is obligatory and make you face every level with a proper power) is more well-thinked than in the latter, where I found myself beating the last boss whitout HALF of the power-ups... The first time I fought with him I thinked "ah, this isn't the real final boss, there will surely be a plot-twist!", and after beating him with a lot of effort, bam, the end. What?

  • Actually, its weird for me to say this but I have found every single item without the use of a strategy guide. I mainly found them because I liked playing each level over again because it was a lot of fun.

  • I was hoping he was going to call Neckbone.

  • wtffffffffffffff

  • Speaking of gargoyles Derek, were you a fan of Greg Weisman's Gargoyles?

  • Beautiful Joe?

    I remember that game...

    It was really hard.

  • Could you please use less offensive language, my kids are gonna have nightmares now...

  • isn't this guy sort of a rip off of the avgn, just putting that out there

  • @BlueRise85 he's more like a satire instead of being angry and talking about shitty games he's happy and talks about great (usually underrated) games. While the nerd drinks beer to get drunk and ease his pain and shouts, the happy nerd appreciates a bottle of wine and praises the good aspects of games.

    I personally like both.

  • Protip: The Imp spell is amazingly effective against the otherwise frustrating slime boss in the Town Level Catacombs, so the spell system isn't a total loss.

  • i didnt much like the SNES one, you can basically skip most of the levels and kick the final boss to the door in around an hour or so

  • @deathman1021 Yeah, but doing that is not only uber-hard but also gives you the worst ending.

  • I would so love a new Onimusha... hell even a remake of then old ones would be bad ass.

  • One thing why Demon's Crest can be hard is due to most people not knowing about the weakness element available (Well, there is no life bar for bosses). Aerial gargoyle is great against airborne enemies, and Earth Gargoyle's grounded shots deal twice damage. Time & Heaven are just cheesy.

There is also the misconceptions that Claw and Buster are good, when they deal less damage than all and even his first fire weapon. Frankly, the whole fire crest is shafted.

That said, great review as always.

  • I support HD version of Demons crest it's awesome!

  • Aramer! Aramer!

  • 'Devil May Cry' went back into the vault? Seriously?

  • You forgot to mention that Gargoyle's Quest II wasn't only exclusive for the NES, it was later ported to the Game Boy, but I guess you would prefer the NES version for several reasons. OH WAIT! You mentioned it near the end and said it was Japan-only. Oh well.

Firebrand did appear in Ultimate MVC 3, but you forgot to mention that Red Arremer appeared in SVC Chaos: SNK VS. Capcom for the Neo-Geo as Capcom's rival of SNK's Princess Athena from the Athena arcade.

  • 17:42 That music! I moand like I had just had the biggest orgasm of my life. I'm not even joking.

  • Holy fucklord was I happy when I saw this! Demon's Crest is one of my favorite games for the SNES. If anyone has a PAL version of it, feel free to chat me up. It's really hard to find one!

  • "bitching about password".... tsk, kids nowadays and their quick save states and auto checkpoints every 10 sec.

The advantage with password was that you can exchange it with friends or strangers on your savestates. Also somehow it does makes you work with your pen and paper in a fun way. The most annoying password would be big and small letters. Also it adds an challenge to the game where you have to find the "guru" or game over screen where they give you the password.

  • HAHAHAH! LMFAO! Yes these GAMES were a WORTH a grea treasure

back then! Now let me share this thought! Arremer can spit FIRE but

why can he touch it! HAHAHAHA that capcom thought it's a little

crazy isn't it! I love it on MVC3 but still NO freaking game has yet been

made! He is not a BAD Guy we all know but can capcom go back to

the old WAY of thinking a game like this! Futhermore BLACKTIGER

had been scrapped provably numerous time with no luck in bringing it

    back too!: :-) thanks!

  • Hey Derek. Just a thought.

If you really want to get less email about a remake of Gargoyle's Quest (because some will any way) you should say don't email at the beginning and end. Not just at the end. Because some people will email you before they finish the video.

Anyway Great review. I played all 3. Those were (and still) very fun. As always I look forward to your next review.

Judging by the song would that be Castlevania 3? XD

    You the man.

  • Red Arremer?

  • hey you should do and pocky and rocky video

  • shenmue is not capcom its sega

    .

  • ive been meaning to try out this games for along time now so thanks for reminding me. that snes game looks awesome and btw the reason the items are so ridicuiosly well hidden was to make people buy thst old nintendo magazine that told you about stuff like this

  • well thanks to this video now i got the nes and the snes 1 will get the gb 1 later maybe so far i like the snes 1 best

  • Sadly, DMC isn't in Capcom's vault. It's in the hands of some British twatdonkey who's using it as a vehicle to make is own self-insert fanfiction.

  • how ironic that firebrand can get hurt by fire...

  • Demons crest has to be one of my all time favorit games, some of the best music even on the SNES.

  • Demon's Crest is an awesome game, but I will agree with the reviewer that Megaman X is more polished.

Also, I think I had a braingasm when the Demon's Crest theme music kicked in at 17:42

  • just bought gargoyles quest on my 3DS, didnt even finish watching the video bought it right then and there

  • @ookami571

    me too

  • Phoenix Wright sucks anywayz. Did nothing but spawn a bunch of shitty memes.

  • What's patrick from spongebob on the cover of Gargoyle's Quest?

  • this guys voice is annoying.. sry bud u need to change that shit up or else people dont want to watch ur video. complete rip off of AVGN

  • @bfullstar interesting how he has multiple videos with multiples of thousands of views huh? oh! i see you have some videos! hmm.... high tens....high tens...low 100s.... now lets look back at this 23,841 shall we? you seem to misunderstand "people won't watch your videos" because you clearly don't have anyone watching yours.

  • @mephesto499 i dont care about my channel and views rofl but way to miss the entire point (y) makes you look good

  • Pssssh, super metroid is waaaaay to easy. Megaman X, then Demon Crest, Then...Mystical ninja. Yup.

And I love the first one, one of my first gameboy games, still have it, still play it.

  • and way to take a jab at the nerd and his anger over password saves. "Everyone has a cell phone now. just take a picture..." lol

  • why does he always pronounce nes as ness?

  • @dopplegangerdavid how do you pronounce it?

  • @4LackOfaBetterNam3 Probably N-E-S. letter for letter because it´s an acronym

  • @Kurostyle21 it's common to pronounce acronyms as words, ie sopa= Soap-ah and not Es Oh Pee Ae

  • @4LackOfaBetterNam3 Sure and i pronounces NES mostly as "Ness" as well but some guys get annoyed about that kind of pronounciation and there also are acronyms which you don´t just read out like USA, DNA, or USSR.

  • @Kurostyle21 that's because they don't make good words or you simply don't turn the accronyms of countries into cute little words.

  • i ruined the 555 likes

  • Come on! Viewtiful Joe was badass!

2:05 That's the guy who said OBJECTION! I've been wondering where it came from. But what the heel is Phoenix wright?

  • @Chaosscouter137 He's the guy who's pointing his finger.

  • not sure if its been said but he was also in svc chaos

  • Yes I did know that

  • Ahhh... I remember when Capcom was innovative and put honest-to-God effort in their games...

  • @NecrophageonIII They still do, its just their bussiness decisions that not everyone likes, but as far as making fun games, they still know what they are doing for the most part. I look foward to their new IP calles Azura's Wrath, it looks pretty cool.

  • @FREAKFANATIC Azura's Wrath looks pretty and all, but it also looks like God of War meets the recent Batman titles. There's far too much emphasis placed on the status quo these days, and I think that's my biggest problem. Capcom is guilty too. Then there's the myriad of awful business decisions they've been making lately (right down to the DLC-rape)...

There was a time when Capcom was my favorite developer, but in my opinion, times have changed, and they're all washed up.

  • @NecrophageonIII Well I don't blame you for thinking that way. To me, its all about games, so as long as Capcom and any other company still deliver, then I'll be playing them for sure.

  • @FREAKFANATIC Fair enough. Game on, sir! :)

  • The plant level scared the crap out of me in Gargoyle's Quest 2.

  • Awesome review , as always... but the highlight of this review for me was the fact you got Ben out of retirement to guest star. The Totally Random Show was the most fucking awesome podcast ever and this review just reminds me of how much I miss it (fucking miles better than Sidescrollers and anything else out there I can find). I go back to old episodes every now and again and still get a laugh all these years later! Any chance you can get Ben to pull another Jay Z and do some more shows???

  • @firebrand12345 Thanks for the kind words about the show. Glad you're still enjoying it all these years later. Hopefully new shows will happen at some point as our schedules allow. :)

  • I like Avgn but i really appreciate dereks love and knowledge of old school classics. I played demons crest when it first came out and i loved it truly one of the greatest games on the snes

  • WHERE IS THE MUSIC FROM AT :30??

  • @ericmsandoval that music at :30 is the title screen theme of demon's crest for the super nintendo the third gargoyle's quest game

  • AVGN SO MUCH BETTER

  • @ryadaw3 AVGN is the god father of this stuff but can't blame dudes for trying

  • Sorry to burst your bubble Derek, but I'm fairly certain that the guy at 2:45 and 25:54 is supposed to be Arma, Phalanx' second in command, deciding to give his shot conquering the world. Otherwise, you couldn't possibly do more justice to these wonderful games. Let's indeed hope for a new game, remake or not.

  • I have only GQ2 sofar and thats one of my favorite nes games.

I realy want the other GQ games to =)

  • @FreDaN92 If you know how to use or what a emulator is then could have a chance to play Demons crest for SNES.

  • PEACE OUT BITCH!

  • derek i love the song that plays when you start talking about the second quest i have it on my MP3

so are you still going to review that Gamecube game or are you going to move on to a different game?

  • I still have nightmares about G&G, but i'm wiping the slate clean and giving it a go.

  • he shoulds review demon's crest (SNES)

  • @lucasnx17 nevermind i just commented over.

  • where the earthbound episode

  • The bosses were really my main issue with the game. That skeleton guy with the sword is incredibly hard, and there is no crest at that point to really help you.

Another problem I have with this game is that, although there is an overworld with the levels, most of the time, if you do them out of order, you'll just see an impossibly difficult level/boss and will have to backtrack for new abilities. The whole "non-linear progression" was poorly done, imo. Don't know If I'm just nitpicking.

  • Is that Dr.Wily Stage 1 from Megaman 2 I hear in the intro?

  • Thank you so much! I didn't grow up in the NES era so I don't know many obscure games. I can't wait to play Gargoyle's Quest 2. Also, great idea about taking a picture of passwords.

  • I just got an NES for Christmas :) and of course I've been enjoying the blockbusters like the Super Mario Bros games, The Legend of Zelda, and Final Fantasy, and the only obscure gem I've gotten so far is Crystalis. I'm on the hunt for games like Metal Storm and Journey to Silius though. Speaking of Crystalis, I had the thought that it would have been a much better sequel to The Legend of Zelda than The Adventure of Link. I don't think Zelda II is a bad game, but has too many flaws for me.

  • I find you the best video game REVIEWER on the internet

  • you prolly get this a lot derek, but have you considered making top 10 lists or whatever? something like best action-platformer or capcom games on the nes/snes, or something more original. I mean, unless you're worried that at the VERY top you'll end up with games that aren't particularly underrated, but rather well-known classics like super metroid. I totally understand that feeling, since I'm the same way with movies, music, games, etc. I think there's still potential in that idea though!

  • Those 6 gems look oddly familiar... ;D

  • Will you stop complaining about people sending you emails? Dammit, other people would be grateful for them you jerk.

  • Why this episode is not showing on the HVGN episode list in RetroTV? Also the two latest "Is it really that bad" -episode are not showing themselves where they should.

  • I wish these games would come back, correctly, and show the world how to make games once again, that are fun and challenging.

  • After watching this video, my avatar on PSN is now the gargoyle XD

  • @Testsubject909-Sorry. It's just that the name was brought up right out of nowhere and because of seeing this video recently mixed with seeing an Elder Scrolls Wiki page on easter eggs I thought it was neat.

  • 9:22 Notice the shape of the pink dudes mask :3

  • subbed

  • About 5 min. ago, I was playing Skyrim, and I was doing a Thieves Guild quest and I was asked to steal a bottle of wine called Firebrand Wine. I just needed to tell this after watching this because I found it interesting because puts a handful of easter eggs in their games.

  • @XxStayXPositive Unfortunately just because they use the term Firebrand doesn't mean that it's an actual easter egg to this particular gargoyle.

There are multiple RPGs that have the Firebrand sword for example. For one simple reason. It is a Fire Brand. Get it?

  • 25:54

That's not Firebrand, that's his rival Arma

  • 9:03 3DS virtual console? And who the hell wants a 3DS?

  • @Grandstra Little kids

In speaking of them, To bad they won't be satisfied since its a unknown game to kids and its not 3D.

  • vaginitus

  • Gargwoyle? :P

  • So... was he also Red Arremer?

  • Comment removed

  • If you love Gargoyle's quest, try tracking down a game by the name of Kid Dracula, it's a pretty good platformer with some fun twists, and is one of the most unexpected spinoffs I've ever found.

  • 17:42 Where did you find that song? It sounds different from the SNES version.

  • Music at the beginning?

  • finally a video

  • A score to settle with Eternal Darkness I take it?

  • not interested in the game but dang capcom pulled all the stops with the music back then

  • It's so awesome to hear Ben's voice again. I really miss Video Game Take Out.

  • @VideoGameTakeOut You gotta come back to game reviewing, man!

  • Dude I'm so glad you reviewed these games, I've only played Demon's Crest (not even ghost and goblins) and I love it, you actually reignited my love for the game so much that I GOT to get a hard copy for myself now. Also I didn't know there was a Gargoyle's Quest sequel for the NES thanks for the education (really sad I missed though). :P

  • 25:55 that's not firebrand that's general arma you know the boss at the end of the first level who gives you the earth crest he appears like that in the normal ending

  • Okay I can't tell how much I have been waiting for this to finally happen, to be honest I was almost like what took so long for this review to happen? You know just considering that THIS IS possibly one of the WAY MOST underrated series ever so I actually was expecting such review to happen early. It starts out very promising and filled me with hope as the series full beauty shall be revealed. There has a bit too much focus on the bad things. I feel like not everything needed has been said.

  • I thought you were going to call Neckbone. I miss Neckbone

  • I played the NES version and, I wish I liked it as much as you :)

  • Hey what songs did you use on the video?

  • speaking of Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, fun fact, if Dr. Strange wins a fight against Firebrand, Strange actually says, "this gargoyle's quest...has failed" as his victory speech

  • @ShootStyleZombie hahaha, that's awesome, thanks for sharing!

  • @lophatjello The wiki didn't say anything about Firebrand originally being in ghosts and goblins you probably made a mistake

  • @lophatjello Plus, The gargoyle in ghosts and goblins is the red dragon guard.

  • @lophatjello perhaps it's foreshadowing, and that they're gonna bring back this series?

  • @lophatjello Why did ben stop making VGTO? It's been more than 3 years.

  • @lophatjello just so you know shootstylezombie this guy doesnt have a clue what you're talking about

  • @lophatjello i discovered you by watching AVGN's board james video of loopin' louie where i saw you and several other youtubers there playing the game. that must've been a hell of a day for you all, huh? other than that, i was hoping to see irategamer come along and play the game with you guys.

  • I love the SNES game so much. I've actually been meaning to get back to it.

  • i think ben hall is the jigga man

  • Where did you get that Earthbound picture? Looks like its on a canvas or something.

  • isn't that actually a picture of Arma that you showed @25:54, not firebrand? i think he was like some sort of demon general or something, and a boss or miniboss, i don't remember which.

  • did u ever notice how weird his leg looks in the last sequence (when he talks about emalis)?

  • Wow! I sat through nearly a half an hour of learning about a game series that I've only heard little about and I loved it! :D Thanks HVGN! :D

  • I find the towns on the first two games kind of pointless. The towns don't have any shops or any items to find when you get close to big jars or something, the only thing to do is to talk to people and that's about it, there's not much else to do in those towns. The game should been just a world map with side scrolling gameplay and that's it. That's why I prefer the SNES better, no useless towns or many people to talk to, it gets staright to the point.

  • What remix is the Megaman song in the beginning?

  • Great vid! But how come it's not on Retroware? Are you still putting vids on that site?

  • Holy crap, these graphics are amazing! I mean, Gargoyle's Quest 2 looks like a Super Nintendo game and Demons Crest looks like Super Turrican. If there ever was a Gargoyle's Quest 4 on N64: I swear it would look like a Dreamcast game.

  • I got the 3DS gameboy VC gargoyles quest game on day 2 of its release in europe, its an amazeing game.

The third game is so kick ass but bosses are very hard to dodge.

  • zzzzzzzz

  • Derek, you are an artist when it comes to interesting, funny, and allaround great reviews!

  • 25:54 its Genera Arma, not firebrand..

  • Hi Derek's Mom!

  • I went and beat Gargoyles Crest for the first time when Firebrand was announced for UMvC3.

I really really enjoyed it, but never realised it was party of a cross-platform trilogy. I will check them out immediately, thank you sir!

  • HVGN makes 100% complete reviews, I love this!

  • How dare you not let me email you about something you already might know! xD

  • "Happy" video game nerd?...

    I.....

    I'm completely lost...

I lack the mental capacity to understand it...

  • @AeonDeity

Im right there with you man.

  • As much as I love James Rolfe videos I actually prefer yours, please make more and more frequently!

  • when u said "take it away ben" and looedin tbhe camera i almost thought u were talking to me

  • LOL at the end part "please dont email me" hahaha

  • Demon's Crest was one of my favourite games on the snes.
