was aboard Ranger '67 through '69, radio silence practice for 2 weeks, then closed in on Vladivostok, Russia and launched several aircraft that immediately returned to the ship that then hightailed further out into international waters. several Bear bombers came out and were intercepted by F4's from the Ranger, the captain put the conversation with one pilot named Ivan on ships intercom for all to hear. photo of Bear bomber and F4 from Ranger is in the '69 cruise book.
Likely part of Task Force 71 when North Korea shot down an EC-121 Constellation near Ch'ongjin, only about 75 miles from China and 150 miles south of Vladivostok.
It should be noted that this took place a little over a year after the USS Pueblo was boarded and captured. As far as I know, the USS Pueblo is still a commissioned ship of the US Navy.
I was on the Ranger in 86-87, was in VA-145 out of Whidbey Island. I think we got run out of the Phillipines in 87 because of a Typhoon that was on the way. I had duty first day in so I never even got to leave the ship.
I was in the Phillipines with the 5/14 Infantry, 25th Infantry Div during Operation Balikatan in 1987. We got a chance to ride over to Subic Bay from Camp Tamez and visit the USS Ranger while she was in port. A great ship! Most of the crew were ashore on liberty. The locals in Olongapo would ask us "are you top gun? Are you Ranger?"
the usaf kicks ass :}

Do you have any film of the Russian Bear flyby?? It was a day or two after leaving Subic Bay headed to the gulf, January '91.

Sorry, I do not. I do know there have been two such "public" events in the last five years.

I remember that. It was in the Indian Ocean. The B-52 was from Diego Garcia.

1991. It is part of some footage shot by a buddy of mine. I have a lot of stuff from the VA squadron he was in during the Gulf War.

Ask your buddy about the Russian Bear.

You have to listen close to hear the engines of the B-52 over the aircraft engine on the carrier's flight deck.
I'm all done with this piece of video. Sorry for the many uploads of this clip. This is the final one.
