The idea is to make it a well. If the recharge works well and if the aquifer permits then this can become a withdrawal well too and you can draw water from it. Have not found rats and cockroaches so far :)

Zenrainman, doesn't this attract cockroaches and small rats being practically an open well as it is? Similarly I do work with the same concept in my projects, but instead, use pre-cast concrete rings that don't go all the way to the groundwater, but instead create a space for infiltration, usually 2m deep, or so.
