  • Question for the videographer: Why should one even bother about the specific fairy tale book called "Bible" when so many other fairy tale books are floating around? Or do you really *believe* what's written in that book are true? As historic text of historic significance it's fine, but dedicating a complete channel for a specific book?! That's unfair!

  • I like theological history and theology in general. It doesn't mean I accept any of the beliefs, but the fact that people do and these are the reasons why are fascinating.

Besides, there isn't JUST chemical or physical science. There's social science too.

  • For all of those who are wondering why their "Periodic Videos" subscription linked them to this, it's because Periodic Videos liked this video, and since you have them as a subscriber, you see any videos that are liked by them in your subscription box on the main page of YouTube. It shouldn't matter what subject matter is liked from one department to the other, it's the fact that there is a mutual respect for each subject matter, and University unity. Personally, I think this is a good thing.

  • It's funny to see people acting "smart" in these videos by saying that the Christian God or whichever God is unreal.

    To the smart people:

Don't you guys have better things to do? It's common logic not to watch videos you dislike.

Take this video as a... Reference. No one is forcing you guys to worship, believe, etc.

  • It's a BOOK! I like explosions AND words. Thanks.

  • Just wanted to say I disagree with those who are commenting it is not appropriate to link Periodic Videos with Bibledex. For starters, I would not have found this very interesting channel otherwise. Secondly, none of the videos I've seen have been proselytizing - only presenting the Bible as a subject for academic study - and what's wrong with that? Since it is arguably the most influential book ever written the Bible is certainly deserving of serious study - whatever your own beliefs are.

  • Interesting video, a refreshing change from the science videos I'd usually be watching!

  • Who cares if this is about the Bible, and another channel made by the same person for the same university is about Chemistry!

  • Who at periodic table of videos thought it a good idea to "like" supernatural anti-science videos? Very disappointing.

  • @kasslloyd what?anti-science videos? you want something anti-science huh ok no problem read about Darwin and "very very" scientific works of his "worshipers" then we will talk. look at this big big talkers..

  • @noitnettaattention I have read most of Darwin's works, have you? What is anti-science is anyone who believes that the Bible is anything more than a fictional book created by men in the bronze age, is very much anti-science and thus should not be related in any way to Chemistry or Physics which is Brady's other projects.

  • @kasslloyd what should be related or not to chemistry or physics its NOT how we decide but what TRUTH is!!! (just like if blind person decides himself that there is no sun shining on this world because he don't see it doesn't make it automatically truth no?) want to talk about MAN crated things you don't have to go to far to "bronze age" just look back 150 years just a one lonely MANS journey to Galapagos made his own religion and its"scientific" followers....

  • @noitnettaattention if i read or know Darwin's works ,ill say brother pleeaaase ,i even was born in worlds MOST atheistic country in world called USSR,we were SOAKED with atheist Darwinist ideologies to extend were if they catch you wearing cross or believing to God you could be sure to find yourself in a situation were you praying to KGB this time to not break your one tooth left after couple of days standing in chlorine filled basments of your beloved ATHEIST rulers.

  • @kasslloyd Perhaps your scientific approach ought to extend to finding out what's in the Bible. To claim it was written 'in the bronze age' undermines the credibility of anything you write on this subject.

  • @kasslloyd you think this video is supernatural and/or anti-science? I'm sorry, but that's stupid...

  • @bibledex i do like these vids but i would like to see it expanded to all the religions based on the Israeli god, (Christian, Jewish, Islam, etc) as an atheist i like to learn about religion it makes for better arguments when you have a better education about the religion then the believer.

  • @kasslloyd Hahaha lame

  • people, why all this hate in these videos? God loves you!

And this video totally explained why you cant bash religion by taking phrases out of context and quote them and say "hey bible bla bla bla!"..

  • i might just un subscribe after all this garbage...

  • @bibledex Brady, I love your work and your commitment to the University of Nottingham and education in general. Your videos are the reason I check youtube every day. I even love Words of the World! I will concede that my view is narrow when it comes to the bible, or any religious texts. I'll also admit that I do have a lack of understanding in the project; both for it's purpose and it's place with the rest of the Nottingham Science series. I was just surprised to see it and taken aback.

  • For what it's worth I too think the Period Table brand doesn't sit well with discussions about religion. It's fine if they both exist but just like at Nottm Uni, I wouldn't expect to find the Chem dept endorsing Bible study.

Also, if you want to purely intellectually study religious texts then the Holy Indian tradition (Vedas, Upanishads etc) has so much more to offer than this One God Wonder.

  • @chrisofnottingham @bibledex @DistendedPerinium Thanks for your comments, Chris. It's nice to see someone else with the same view as me. It's not that I think the channel should be closed, but it seems very out of place and doesn't sit well with the discussions about physics and chemistry. It's as if we suddenly got a "neutral view" on alchemy, and not just one video but a whole series of them. It gives religion more weight than it seems to deserve in a forum about the discovery of truth.

  • @chrisofnottingham I didn't upload this onto periodicvideos by mistake did I? No, seems to be here on "Bibledex" and has "Bibledex" in the title. Phew!

I just tweeted it because I thought it was a funny story about the horse and versification being a bit ropey. It was a tweet... Not a paper in Nature!

Funny how "scientific" types can be every bit as protectionist about their sacred subject as the "religious fanatics" they're so quick to denigrate! Not you of course, just in general terms. :)

  • @bibledex I don't follow either on Twitter. For whatever reason it was appeared on my You Tube home page with a Periodic Table connection. I'm not sure if it was just 'Liked by' but I think it was actually 'Uploaded by'. Not sure now. I get similar problems with Facebook sometimes when I do stuff from one account and it appears as if done from another

  • @chrisofnottingham sorry if that happened. weird YouTube glitch!?

I just find EVERYTHING fascinating and want to share it all - whether it's quantum mechanics, the crystal structure of bismuth or how a guy in France divided the most famous book in history into thousands of tiny verses... it's all knowledge...

But I know some people like just science stuff... some just like Bibledex.... some "polymaths" like it all... either way, I'm grateful when anyone takes time to watch & comment! :)

  • @bibledex I am interested in some things other than science and do have an atheists fascination with the history of the Bible. It was purely the apparent mixing up of two departments where we might expect the scholars to hold quite different world views. Anyway, the vids themselves continue to be really good.

And talking of being interested in other things, the psychology dept must have some great stuff.

  • @bibledex Brady i love these Bibledex videos, i have become addicted to them. I'm addicted to your science videos, and your bibledex videos. This Bibledex channel has almost 5,000 subscribers so i'm not the only one that loves these videos. Thank you Brady!

    John.

  • @bibledex No, but periodicvideos favorited this video, which implies periodic videos endorses religion... which is faith based and therefore inherently anti-scientific. Perhaps someone forgot to log out of periodic videos before they started marking videos for personal use. I don't know... just speculating. Have a nice day.

  • @chrisofnottingham vuhuhoooo scared of Bible like real devil ehh?

  • Brady, please do not muddy the name of Periodic Videos with Bibledex :( At least set up a new twitter account if you want to do this, it's really sad to see the @PeriodicVideos twitter account shilling Bibledex videos.

  • @Zaun4242 these films are aimed at science-minded people - deliberately un-religious and coming from a neutral perspective....

Some of the periodicvideos & sixtysymbols scientists even like Bibledex

Bibledex has it's own Twitter, but I occasionally tell periodicvideos followers what's happening too.

I'm very proud of Bibledex & don't consider it "muddying". I think such a description is narrow-minded and shows a lack of understanding of the project... But you're entitled to your view. Thanks.

  • Awesome work Brady, I have been looking forward to biblex videos for some time

  • It's ironic how intellectual some people get when talking about imaginary stories.

  • @Trichomes503 nothing with wrong with intellectual discussion of texts, whether the subject is true, imaginary or in doubt.... scholars study Shakespeare don't they and they take it very seriously? I hope you troll those videos too? :)

This video is most certainly not discussing anything imaginary... They are discussing how the most famous text in history has evolved into its current format with chapters and verses!?

"Person X in Year Y added numbers to chapter Z" What is imaginary about that?

  • @bibledex

No, I don't troll Shakespeare because his stories never focused on an omnipotent god that supposedly created me and everything that I know.

Justin Bieber is popular too, but that doesn't innately mean I should listen to his music nor should the substance of his music be discussed.

Glad to know I struck a chord though. Lol!

  • @Trichomes503 Are you a sperg or something? Can you honestly not process why people would want to talk about the bible as an historical text?

  • @Trichomes503 So, you're saying it's a book not worth reading?

  • @Trichomes503 I'm atheist and I watch these videos. I have the maturity and intellectual development to keep an open mind an not troll people on the beliefs they are completely entitled to.

  • @PBSocalPB

But you'll troll my comments... Is that irony or hypocrisy?

  • @Trichomes503 If Justin Beiber's songs are still being sung in 2,000 years and having a major influence on global affairs (for better or worse), I think they would be (and should be) studied.

It doesn't matter what you (or I) think is true or even well-written... There is more to it than that... And I suspect you know that!

    Now go troll someone else.

  • @bibledex Nevermind people like that. Most supposed "atheists" I have spoken with are among the most spiteful and closed-minded people I have ever met. In addition, many, many of these people seem to have a problem only with Christianity and not any other religion. Sadly, a great many of these people don't even realize they are being spiteful, most often through humor. I don't mean the "trolling" type of humor meant to anger those of faith, I mean humor genuinely meant to make (continued)-

  • @DistendedPerinium people laugh. This is a passive dismissal sort of spite, but still spite. Finally, before I begin ranting, I do find it ironic that many of these people hold a sort of messianic attitude that they are "enlightening" people of faith by alerting them to the "fact" that their faith is baseless and thus "saving" them from what the atheists perceive as ignorance.

  • That was a really interesting and enjoyable one, and so relevant too! good job! imo, bibledex is too under rated.

the very ones who should be paying attention are not even here.

by that i mean the poo flinging extremeists of both persuasions, who seem to prefer an ultra polarized stance on anything.

  • ""religious nonsense"

    Gotta love redundancy!

    Great vid, very interesting.

  • Well, Paul is pretty clear about women's obligation to submit to their husbands in his letter to the Corinthians. Are you guys suggesting that such an obligation is not actually asserted in Ephesians?

  • Great video!

  • Could someone comment on the difference in versification between parts of the Masoretic Text and corresponding parts in English versions? Why are there discrepancies?

  • I suggest that sometime in the future you do a series on comparison of verse A with verse B... Such as the different descriptions of the woman (women) going to the tomb of Jesus...

  • Interesting and Informative as usual!

Keep up the good work, guys!

  • Excellent. Thanks for the history lesson.

  • Great video. I'm really looking forward to what's to follow. This is such a great project, one of the best and most comprehensive I've ever come across. Keep up the good work.
