  • i have intel grapics card btw

  • how do i hook up my tv to my netbook, with ubuntu?

    i have 11.04

  • you have a big willy head

  • Very well constructed video, thank you

  • Dukes of hazzard lol

  • my 10.04 doesn't have EnvyNG in SP? Is there a workaround for that?

  • @baloneyjazz Envy NG doesn't work with 9.20 and up. Use Jockey (System, administration, add drivers),

  • i cant even find envyNG on the net with a clean download

  • i don't have system tools

  • can't install envyng what should I do?

  • btw, if you prefer terminal or are doing it from SSH (like me), the command is 'sudo apt-get install envyng-gtk envyng-core' if it doesn't work, run them as two seperate commands

  • @lowtone10 also if you want to config using shell, type 'sudo envyng -t' (from the envy faq)

  • Followed your directions. Got to amdcccle, but after clicking on display manager, my choices were not the same as posted in the video. I did not have the choice of big desktop. Are there other items I need to install or check.

  • on step 3 (nvidia) when i click configure disabled and twinview are greyed out and say "twinview (requires X restart) i cant find anything on this, can anyone help? i would greatly appreciate it.

  • im having the same problem. did u figure it out?

  • when I select ATI, I get "ATI card not found". When I select NVIDIA, I get "Nvidia card not found".

I have an HP TC4400 (tablet PC).

  • i tryed this but when it restarts it says error and that my computer is running in low graphics display?

  • I did this with 8.04 which worked but when I upgraded to 8.10 my display is royally messed up my display for some reason is pushed to my second screen and only 1/4 shows while my main screen is all black.

  • is it not possible to have two separate monitors with separate backgrounds with an nvidia card

  • Hello I only have 1 VGA cable behind my computer? so what i do?

  • you can either buy another graphics card to run side by side with your current one or you can get a usb to vga port

the graphics card option is the cheapest but the usb to vga is easier

  • I installed envyNG but can't find where to open it where you said to. I don't have a System Tools tab under my Applications. I'm new to Ubuntu.

  • You might not have the front end for it installed. Try bringing up terminal (or press alt + f2, type sudo -i and check 'Run in terminal' ) then type envyng -t

Also, it's worth noting that the newest version of ubuntu has a lot better dual monitor support, I haven't had to use envyng on any computer of mine with the latest version of ubuntu

  • Thanks! It worked!

  • watching this on my left 17" monitor, and my right 17" is my work

  • How about with I want to set up using an ACER Aspire 5610 (Intel Graphic Card)?

    How can I do that?

  • did anyone get these steps to work with ubuntu 9.04?

  • in ubuntu 9.04 its just plug and play

  • yea.. i guess i should have been more specific. I got it to work but not with compiz.. or any kind of effects for that matter. Its no fun to use ubuntu without any cool effects..

I use an ati graphics card.. I think ubuntu has some driver issues with em.

  • It might be plug and play... and both my screens are recognized... BUT i still cannot get the screens set up individually because I apparently don't own the ATI catalyst programm. Any help on that?

  • I am trying to implement this on ubuntu 8.10. I am unable to get to Applications->System Tools->EnvyNG. I have installed EnvyNG.

The problem is that I do not find System Tools under Applications. Since I just installed ubuntu 8.10 2 days ago, any inputs are welcome.

  • Anything can still be run, if installed, when started in the terminal.

Go to Accessories->Terminal-> envyng -t or envyng -qt

  • Great instructions. I am running Ubuntu 8.04 LTS also. Got this working right away. Works great with Compiz Fusion! One thing: when you get to the part where you are making settings in the Nvidia control panel, exit the panel, and get to the panel this way applications>accessories>terminal ...type 'sudo nvidia-settings' without the quotes then type your password and hit enter..brings up the NvidiaControlPanel and lets you make AND SAVE the settings correctly AS ROOT. Thanks a lot!

  • Thx Erik!

  • Hi thanks i got the twinview working on my Mac with Ubuntu 8.10, however could not set up a copy of the twinview config in the home directory, it seemed to do it once though, also the terminal command line. met with no response after the password was entered, it returned to :-$. so right now i have to reconfigure the monitors on every boot, any ideas?

  • I did this on Ubuntu 8.04 legacy and ran into one problem.

If you are not logged into root you do not have permission to write to /etc/Xll directory so your configuration will not save and when you reboot you will have to reconfigure.

  • Solution:

When you press save to X Configuration file. Change the directory to a location you do have rights to (such as your home directory). Then go to a terminal and run the following commands.

  • sudo cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.back2 (This command is making a backup of your config file.) (Note: When you issue this it will ask for a password.) (The password is the same one you used to log in.)

sudo cp /(Path that you saved the file to)/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf (This command is overwritting the old conf file.)

  • thx very helpfully tool

  • yes it worked for me as welli have dual monitors now on ubuntu pci express ati asus card. works fine i do have some orange color adjacent to my backgroundon each screen but i think i can fix this on desktop color scheme thanks great job saved me a lot of time and effort i googled this with ubuntu dual monitor

  • when i installed the drivers and restarted ubuntu loaded then before going to the login screen the computer stopped giving the monitor input and my monitor just went to sleep and nothing happens.

  • I've been looking for a solution for many months. This evening I hit on the right search words and got this hit. In short...it works and I now have dual HW191D monitors with my ATI card on a dual boot Ubuntu / XP system. Well done Erik!

  • this worked for me as well but i had to go into file manager to find my run exe file under usr/bin/x11 then i ran it in terminal and then i found the ati setup menu in applications accesories it is there but have to find this in usr/bin somewhere if it is not on start menu thanks agin it is perfectly working

  • hey i followed your instructions, everything seem to work all but i problem. Im using a Toshiba Laptop with a mobile m200 ATI card. The problem is that after everything is done the resolution on the laptop shrinks leaving me with like a full screen look...help

  • KNOWN ISSUES: twinview stretches the desktop wallpaper,Seperate X windows have their own start menus and cannot drag and drop between them....also you ***MUST run envy as administrator to save Xconfig... to do this, open a terminal window and type in:

    sudo nvidia-settings

  • WARNING...

for some PC/LAPTOPS you might have to reinstate the Nvidia drivers post-install of envy...

this was left out of the tutorial... you can do this by re-enabling desktop effects, and it should automatically ask you which proprietary drivers to use. [use the suggested]

  • In Ubuntu 8.10, I installed envyNG through the Synaptic package manager, as advised, but I can't find the menu Applications --> Systems Tools. Can anyone help me get this menu to appear so I can find envyNG? Thank you.

  • Did you install the gtk version as well? Try bringing up the command prompt (alt + f2 then run "sudo -i" in the terminal by checking the box) and type envyng

  • My laptop's CCFL bulb got busted, so I'm opting to use a spare tv. If I was to use a s-video cable, would it work with EnvyNG? I'm inexperienced with all of this.

  • It should work, it should probably detect it as a secondary monitor.

  • Hi! Thank you so much for this video, it was so easy to set up dual booting and a lot easier to understand than other tutorials I found...

I do have one question though...my second screen (an HDTV connected via RGB) is tinted blue. I'm sure the problem doesn't lie with the monitor or cable since it works fine when I connect it to Vista. I think it has to do with TV signal output but I don't know what to write. Do you/does anyone have any input?

  • Try using an s-video or composite cable if you aren't already. You'll get a blue screen if you use component video cables.

  • Im on Ubuntu 8.10 and I cant find the EnvyNG

  • you probably need to enable the right repo - by default 8.04 has all the repos enabled where as 8.10 doesn't (as far as I know)

    go to system>administration>softwaresources to see

on the ubuntusoftware tab make sure (main), (universe), (restricted) and (multiverse) are all checked then close, choose to update from the dialog and search synaptic for envyng again

  • I'm dual booted with Windows XP & Ubuntu 8.10. If I do this (Configure my ATI card) will it screw up my Windows configuration? Please PM me. Thanks!

  • also, my ATI card is x300

  • okay, one more thing, can I use desktop/ visual effects with this? Cause I have the ATI x300 driver installed a different way and they wont work, will this fix my problem?

  • You should be able to use the visual effects (compiz) with this. Settings you change in Ubuntu shouldn't affect your window's installation

  • i installed it all exactly as you said and it works, kind of, on vista evrything runs perfectly smoothly and nicely on two screens on ubuntu the whole thing slows way down, so much so i can't do anything. i have an nvidia 8800gt and 2 gb of ram with 2.00Ghz processor, do you have any idea why it might be doing this, thanks.

  • thanks man, this was very helpful and it is much appreciated

  • Hey, I can't set up dual monitors because every time I hit apply in Nvidia X Server settings, I get this error:

    Failed to set MetaMode (1) 'CRT-0: 1280x1024 @1280x1024 +1440+0, DFP-0: nvidia-auto-select @1440x900 +0+124' (Mode 2720x1024, id: 55) on X screen 0

Would you like to remove this MetaMode?

Whether or not I click yes or no doesn't seem to effect anything. When I restart, it still doesn't do anything (whether I save the Xconfig file or not-it tells me it can't remove the backup xconf).

  • disregard my last comment, (after uninstall/reinstall manualy choosing driver) everything up and working...)

tutorials of you tube are goor, frankly the ubunto forum scares me almost more then vista

  • Looked good in your vid, and fast , but then envyng couldn't detect my vid card (nvidia 9300 ge) so the rest didn't work either . this is the first thing i tried in ubuntu, not a good start , but will go on because vista is killing me, help me if ya can otherwise follow your dream dude...

  • How did you connect the monitors at the back of the pc

  • Thanks! Great Job Explaining how to. It worked. Keep up the goodwork.

  • Does this work on ubunto 7.10 or do i have to upgrade?

  • should work on 7.10

  • Thank you, You have helped me everytime i tryed this it screwed my linux up, Now i have dual screens, Ventrilo now perfect, EVEN SPECIAL EFFECTS

Thanks you saved me time and energy on this :D

  • oh! the screen res. Now I got it thanks!

  • Thanx, i was troubleshooting with this for a long time. now i know how its done

  • it worked brilliantly! thankyou very much! I am a linux newbie and not having to edit any command files is brillaint thankyou very much!
