The Lutheran heritage of Faith Alone, Grace Alone, Scripture Alone, and Christ Alone is demonstrated in its hymnody. This is such a comforting hymn. This message comes straight from God for Isaiah to give to His people. That is what he tells us, His Church, that through baptism and His holy Word, he covers our sins with His own blood and tells us that our warfare now is over.
I am an ELCA Lutheran from South Carolina. I play the piano and organ. Today (December 5, Advent 2), I filled in at a local Lutheran Church and played this as the Hymn of the Day. It is #256 in Evangelical Lutheran Worship. It can also be sung when Isaiah 40: 1-5, 25-26, 29-31 is read. That was the basis of our Sunday School Lesson for today. It was entitled Receiving Comfort and Strength.
