each number means u leave a different amount of hair behind. For example a 0 is nothing left behind (and you are bald after the cut is complete). A 1 is leaving 3mm behind, a 2 is leaving 6mm behind, a 3 is 9mm behind and a 4 is leaving 12mm behind ( a half inch). An 8 is a full inch (or 24mm) etc. So this being a 4 means that the barber buzzed off all hair leaving a half inch of hair left
