Pull oath of office and bond from courthouse for city council. List violations of oath and accept with affidavit, file at courthouse. Send to council person cert mail. Contact bonding company and request form to file claim against bond for damages, violation of oath damaged you and is breech of contract. The bonding co will drop the bond, the city council have bond or career over. An ordinance is not law, does not apply to the people only offices & employees of city, study up.

For communal areas in a commercial buildings it can make sense to share the key if the owner want to do it. But I think many offices will still be locked. Also how often do you get false alarms in private homes where no one is home that don't have a jacked-in fire alarm anyway...
I might be willing to share a key with a private security agency under a private voluntary contract that can come and check alarms and see if they need to call pd/fd .... but the government? Over my dead body!

The Fire Dept. Official doesn't understand the law. The 4th Amendment is very explicit, one needn't have a court (judiciary), to review this proposal. This is a complete violation of the US Constitution, period.

I cannot speak for sure whether such technology is actually in use, but given the signs and our history, I would not be surprised if it were pandemic. When you consider that almost all of our technology is actually made overseas, it wouldn't surprise me if toasters were more than they seemed.

as for fire alarms, upon arrival if no fire or smoke is visible they will investigate before destroying the property. they look through windows for smoke or flames or any sign that there might be a fire. some dept even have thermal imaging cameras. if nothing is showing than they look for the easiest ways in. and in most cases they do minor damage to gain entry.
2:30 lets say the house is on fire. i can bet you the fire dept will not be sorting threw keys while the place burns. they will break the door down. but lets say they do stand there sorting threw the keys while the place burns down and use the keys to open the door without breaking it. most of the time the windows will be broken anyways to allow for visability and ventilation. and why you might have saved the door you might lose the rest of the place...

Remember that if we force entry, your building is no longer secure until you replace the door. Many property owners might be upset with that idea, especially if it were to occur frequently due to a problem with their alarm system. If you wait for visible fire, you put safety at risk. Many commercial properties and multi-resident dwellings don't have 24/7 security to open doors. Lock boxes are a compromise of risks vs benefits. I would think that most should want to use them regardless of laws.

As a firefighter, while I can understand a desire not to be mandated to implement these, I really wish people would speak to facts and not react emotionally. A few others have correctly stated that such lock boxes are in very wide use in most US urban areas. We use them every day. I think many people under-estimate the number of false activations of fire alarms that occur daily. Should we force entry every time for likely false alarms, or ignore them until there's visible fire from outside?
@freeoutdoors The problem is that, especially with the Cedar Falls data, it doesn't justify enforcing the mandate. Each lockbox costs around $500. Multiply that with all the properties and you get a $500,000 tax on the citizens. Say that each door costs around $1000 to fix, you will need about 500 doors broken into to even recoup that intial investment. Guess what? There were 0 force-entries in 2010.

Pull oath of office and bond from courthouse for city council. List violations of oath and accept with affidavit, file at courthouse. Send to council person cert mail. Contact bonding company and request form to file claim against bond for damages, violation of oath damaged you and is breech of contract. The bonding co will drop the bond, the city council have bond or career over. An ordinance is not law, does not apply to the people only offices & employees of city, study up.

I, along with 3 other over-50 people are facing a showdown over this. I have nowhere else to go and no money to do so. This county, Larimer, is astoundingly corrupt. I have a friend who is now homeless due to her speaking out on ICLEI. I support her and have spoken out myself. Nobody cares.

(Arriving from Schneier on Security). Some people made a reasonable point that the lock box is connected to the internal alarm system. If you're supposed to have access and get in, the alarm has already gone off; if you aren't supposed to have access, then someone will know about.

For communal areas in a commercial buildings it can make sense to share the key if the owner want to do it. But I think many offices will still be locked. Also how often do you get false alarms in private homes where no one is home that don't have a jacked-in fire alarm anyway...
I might be willing to share a key with a private security agency under a private voluntary contract that can come and check alarms and see if they need to call pd/fd .... but the government? Over my dead body!

If a property wants a lockbox as part of there fire-safety solution and get some insurance discount for it is that is fine. But if they would rather pay a higher insurance premium or replace the door that is up to them and not you or some politician.
Also I doubt there are many building if any where this key actually gives you access to every single room in the building...

As a firefighter, if an alarm goes off, and we show up, if there is a lock box we don't have to force entry. What they don't seem to realize is that the choice is: Do we use a key to get in or an ax. If we use the ax, guess what...YOU pay for the damages, not us, and glass doors are not cheep.

I cannot speak for sure whether such technology is actually in use, but given the signs and our history, I would not be surprised if it were pandemic. When you consider that almost all of our technology is actually made overseas, it wouldn't surprise me if toasters were more than they seemed.

You should be looking for discolorations and hair-like traces, bumps a fraction the size of a grain of sand, and perhaps a mechanical transducer terminated on a piezoelectric or capacitative pickup. Probably protected by a plastic film that would look like a drop of paint or a manufacturing defect. Not likely to be worth the effort.

as for fire alarms, upon arrival if no fire or smoke is visible they will investigate before destroying the property. they look through windows for smoke or flames or any sign that there might be a fire. some dept even have thermal imaging cameras. if nothing is showing than they look for the easiest ways in. and in most cases they do minor damage to gain entry.

Remember that if we force entry, your building is no longer secure until you replace the door. Many property owners might be upset with that idea, especially if it were to occur frequently due to a problem with their alarm system. If you wait for visible fire, you put safety at risk. Many commercial properties and multi-resident dwellings don't have 24/7 security to open doors. Lock boxes are a compromise of risks vs benefits. I would think that most should want to use them regardless of laws.

As a firefighter, while I can understand a desire not to be mandated to implement these, I really wish people would speak to facts and not react emotionally. A few others have correctly stated that such lock boxes are in very wide use in most US urban areas. We use them every day. I think many people under-estimate the number of false activations of fire alarms that occur daily. Should we force entry every time for likely false alarms, or ignore them until there's visible fire from outside?

@freeoutdoors The problem is that, especially with the Cedar Falls data, it doesn't justify enforcing the mandate. Each lockbox costs around $500. Multiply that with all the properties and you get a $500,000 tax on the citizens. Say that each door costs around $1000 to fix, you will need about 500 doors broken into to even recoup that intial investment. Guess what? There were 0 force-entries in 2010.

Follow the money. Do any of these council members have an interest in lock box sales, stocks, etc? Which businesses are exempted? That is a key piece of information. Are retail stores included? This is pure insanity. Insanity and tyranny are two sides of the same coin.
