In 1997, Adam Levine and Jesse Carmichael went to work together with Mickey Madden and Ryan Dusick(who's ex drummer now) to form a band called Kara's Flowers. When James Valentine came to the band (in 2001) they got the name Maroon 5. (sorry for poor English)
