  • super karen ,super carpenters-i love ,love this song!!!!

  • LINDÍSSIMAAAAAAA !!!!!!!

  • Dear Karen, why did you have to leave us so early in life?

I will definitely let you be THE one. R.I.P. Godspeed.

  • What a great song, sung perfectly (as usual) by Karen Carpenter. This should have been released as a single. Not sure why Richard and A&M didn't release it as such. The clothes from that era were such a trip. What show was this clip from, anyone know?

  • @SpazticColin Make Your Own Kind of Music-1971. It was one of those summer deals on one of the major networks. I think it was Friday Nights,NBC, but not entirely sure. It ran for like 6-8 weeks or something like that.

  • Wow, I like how brazenly she displays her totally fucked up teeth.

That would never happen today. Haha.

  • My High School Pops Choir sang this back in the 70's....LOVED it then...LOVE it now.

  • I remember in the back of the car in the 70's loving this

  • Lmao... at someone conplaining about her wardrobe,i think she looked good kind of like a choir girl, wholesome, pure and classy too.

  • I cannot listen to the voice of Karen Carpenter without crying. But in a good way - she embodies all that is beautiful in music , the voice of an angel, she was a gift from above, a gift we wereallowed to enjoy only for a short while before that gift was taken from us. But hey, everyone's life is richer for having known the music of the Carpenters. Thank you Karen and Richard.

  • ikävöin edelleen Karen Carpenteria . upea nainen ja upea ääni

  • I'm wide awake at 2:27 a.m . , that's perfect to hear this song !

  • KAREN.....on a jamais fais mieux dans la chanson.....une voix chaude et envoutante FOR EVER .

  • Karen had the BEST voice ever!! Beautiful!!

  • Une de mes préférées de Karen.

  • The best of real music. Honest, clean and innocent lyrics.

    This will never happen again.

Anorexia Nervosa is a curse from the pits of hell!

  • Listen, Karen Carpenter was a great talented singer, but they really needed to work on presentation that was boring and horrendously amateur, that's all I'm sayin. At first Karen started in the back as a drummer and that was how they rose to notoriety. When that was taken, they really sucked as performers. Karen looks totally retarded in this video. Whose the moron who decided to make fun of her taking away a microphone!

  • Comment removed

  • She needed professional training in presentation, no doubt. Very amateur and the wardrobe was hilarious .Where the hell were the hair stylist and make up artists back in those days? They must have been on a real budget. She could have been so much more with a little effort.

  • @studiosinger

You are shallow-minded! This was the 1970s, and the outfits she wore were fine, in fact the modesty she shows in the early 1970s concerts is incredibly refreshing.....very sweet. Maxi dresses and long hair with a "hippy" sort of look was common and evocative for that time period. Anyway, THE MAIN THING IS HER GREAT TALENT, and THE EMOTION AND DEPTH OF FEELING in her songs. Who gives a rat's patoot if her hair, makeup and dress "need improvement"!! (She needed no makeup!).

  • @daverwhi No I'm not, unless she wanted to be a studio singer, she had a responsibility to improve her presentation on television as a singer. I'm saying they neglected to train both of them on performance techniques that's all. They would have been far more pleasing on television. I've never felt comfortable watching the Carpenters perform music on television, they always looked retarded except when she was a drummer.

  • I didn't realize this was live when I clicked on it...and I'm sitting here with goose bumps on my arms, and struggling not to cry. This was just as gorgeous live as in the studio. I want to walk down the aisle to this song. It would be perfect for it. I heard Richard didn't think this was "hit" material in the 70s. I'm sorry he thought that. If they had released this, it would have been the number-one smash you couldn't get away from - and the "queen of all firsr dances"!

  • great song by paul williams tailor made for karen, even though it wasnt written for her. Just fantastic!

  • Love your idea vmuto I wish that would happen too

  • I would like to put this one out there & roll the Dice for the world to read & see what they think of this idea. I would Love more than anything in the world for Richard Carpenter to get the Carpenter band together (including Herb, & Burt who were a Big part) & do a tribute show for Karen &Tony. Why not one more time, for the good old times. Everyones getting older each & every year, I really believe in my heart that this would be special & Karen could be included on a Big Screen with Pictures

  • @vmuto1 How would/could you re-create the music without Karen, and to a lesser degree, Tony? The only way I see it working is if the remaining band members & Richard rehearse "live" music to fit in Karen's 35+ year-old vocals. That would be ok for a song or two, but a whole concert would be kinda creepy. I'd rather see Richard release digitally re-mastered concert(s) from Melbourne 1972 (in my opinion, their best), as well as other early concerts on DVD, when Karen was healthy.

  • @greenwich1754 You must mean released as a single right? I thought they did release this, I've heard it before and I didn't have this album.

  • @studiosinger My comment above has nothing to do with this song. It is a response to another post regarding his desire to see Richard essentially re-create the Carpenters with the original (remaining) band members to do a tribute show for Karen & Tony Peluso. I was suggesting that the better alternative was to digitally re-master & release the Carpenters early concerts, (some which were fabulous), which Richard has not done/will not do. As to the song, it was on their 1971 album "Carpenter's"

  • The structure of this song is so unique, and Karen sings it with such passion. She had the best voice of anyone I've ever heard. She was amazing, and she and Richard made the most memorable music. Today's music is utterly forgettable, and is "old" after 3 weeks.

  • is the best version I've heard this song, the Carpenters have that gift of making all their remarkable music.

  • Randy Schmidt's book is awesome! Showcases Karen in a more honest and realistic approach! Best read!!!

  • I will go on the record by saying Karen Carpenter's problem was ultimately SELF ESTEEM, that lead to her eating disorder. Over the last 10 months countless people have told me that I was right about Randy Schmidt just wanting to sell books, however pay no kudos to me. The fans usually find out the truth. I can add 25 chapters to Randy's INCOMPLETE book. The people who wouldn't talk to him will talk to me, because I would NEVER throw people of whom I Love under the bus, especially Karen.

  • on dirait Chantal Goya..

  • Beautiful voice...beautiful writing by Paul Williams

  • What a voice...and a beautiful song written by Paul Williams...

  • What a voice...

  • awesomeness

  • Another great song written by Paul Williams

  • she's a legend

  • Karen, why didn't you take care of yourself? We needed more of you.

  • Karen was great in this one. But I like more Paul Anka's version. Great posting.

  • @gustavogomezdiaz I'm not so much into Paul's ankles - I prefer Karen's voice

  • @greenwich1754 Yes, endeed. Me too.

  • The female singers today that are considered the best should do covers of Karen's songs for a comparison.

  • Love this song great vocals by Karen ! WOW

  • God is this beautiful!!

  • Someone should do an R an B cover of this song. I think it would be a huge hit.

  • After all these years Karen's voice hits me right in my heart.... Her unique timbre, warm, soft, undercooled shows her greatness. rip karen..

  • My favorite Carpenters song.

  • whatta weird hippie

  • @BigBadBillyBlueBalls Well, you got your wish. But she wasn't skinny (nor fat ) at this point.

  • @greenwich1754 What's wrong with puking? All my friends do it. Karen did it, too. She died because she got a disease from fucking niggers who don't tip at restaurants.

  • @VomitingBitch It's obvious that you must be a tea party member, because only tea party members engage in hate speech.

  • @greenwich1754 How is that hate speech, ya dirty jew?! All I did was state a fact. Go fuck a cow's cunt!

  • @VomitingBitch It's a sad day when a Border Collie named Chaser knows over 1000 words, and you have knowledge of, well,...several. As to "stating facts" - you may be regarding your friends, but as to Karen's death, she did not die from actions you stated. Yes, anorexia, but not what you stated.

  • puke

  • @WrecKMyRectum1 Iike big white women too. and im a white guy.Im probably in the minority for white guys even tho i think there are alot more that like them but just wont admit it.There is one good thing about the obesity problem, more good looking big women.Getting back to Karen.Even tho im into classic rock, I thought she had a wonderful voice.Sad that she died. Some of the Carpenter's and Bread's songs are good but so sad you feel like you want to put a .38 to your head.

  • I keep listening to The Carpenters! I wished Karen was still here! She was so pretty! I think she was my first love! LOL!!! I was hearing the carpenters as far back as I can remember. I was two when Karen first recorded this song.

  • I remember the day she died! I Don't know why but her death really effected me! My mother really liked the Carpenters and would play them all the time and I was a 7 year old in love with Karen Carpenter. Her voice was awesome and I listened to the Carpenters as I would fall asleep at night. I don't listen to this kind of music but the Carpenters, I will listen too! And Karen, I wished she was still here. Dude I listen to Rock but when I stop and here Karen, I cry! What is up with that?

  • Beautiful, one of a kind voice. Too bad we can't get music like this now, but there is just no real singers today. Four people have no taste. Probably like gaga and beiber.

  • A voice and a person that is so beloved and greatly missed .... still!

  • yay~my mum still likes the carpenter songs, abba, beegees, etc(i download them for her lol)

  • there has NEVER BEEN A MORE TRUE SINGER IN the last 50 years........PURE MAGIC

  • Karen had, without a doubt. one the the most phenomenal voices of the twentieth century. She is dearly missed.

  • @bronxboy47 : she was the voice of a Godess for the time, so very special...how we need her now!

  • Really says a lot when it's a female singer, and there is only 4 dislikes :)

  • The music now can't stand up to this and the beautiful voice.

  • How can you beat her voice at 58 secs (at the start of the bridge)??? Exceptional........

  • can we please. find more Carpenters. can we find somthing in the A&M vault. can someone young and new be this good.

  • 1971 was a good year for them.

  • Her performance of this song is much like a perfect piece of art, beautiful and intriguing. It's her Mona Lisa.

  • Special.

  • My God Karen I would run to you indeed;)

  • she look like an angel

  • One of my favorite Carpenters songs.

  • Our borrowed Angel- Look at the Love in her eyes & face. She was way to good for this world. The most Angelic looking person that I have ever heard, or seen. Karen is the reason I don't watch singing talent shows, this is the real American Idol. There is alot of Carpenters out there to discover here on you tube. Carpenters at budokan & so much more...

  • I was born in the mid 80's and even I think that music is missing this type of singer these days

  • i pressed dislike by mistake i love the carpenters

  • my God. why was this not a hit.

  • ufff..If the time could returns. For ever, one of the best. ( For me)

  • I agree. Turn back the hands of time to about 1973 and I would find a way to get to one of their concerts. Their music just touches my heart. I love Karens singing so much. Richard is wonderful on the piano and the whole group was just so fine.

  • God I miss her!!

  • I have to say, among all of the Karen Carpenters songs, this song is perhaps my Favorite of all time. I just don't know why. I love so many of her songs like I do this one. It just goes straight through my heart and soul, piercing my very being. Just absolutely awesome. But as much as I try, there are no words that can begin to comprehend, and give justice to Karen Carpenter's songs, and her pure haunting angelic voice, it's just magical..

I wish I could go back to the early seventies again..

  • Follow-on thoughts - Karen Carpenter graced the 70's music world with a voice that was FAR more than the sum of its parts. After this, I truly believe that the torch was passed to artists such as ONJ, my argument for this displayed quite beautifully at:

    /watch?v=zLaX-nXqS9A

  • I've heard a longer version of the song in Carol Burnett show but somewhat low quality... its there a longer version of this song in a better recording? please help me... thanks :)

  • @mnlght0snt

Please feel free to listen to my cover under 'Video Responses' - hopefully the audio is a bitter better there.

    Thanks,

    Sunshine

  • no words can describe the beauty of her voice beautifully complemented by some of her brothers compositions as well as others peoplos

  • @springvaleforever - Oh my gentle Jesus! Thank you SOOO much for posting this video! This happens to be my FAVORITE Carpenters song, seeing this performance brought me to tears. Karen had one of those voices that transcends the music and the venue, and touches the timeless ether of the universe. Requiescant en pace, Karen Carpenter.

  • @slipstick99 Requiescant in pace? Is that a language to which I'm unfamiliar? I have heard of "rest in peace", oddly enough.

  • @greenwich1754 - try Latin

  • R.I.P. KAREN CARPENTER!

  • magnificent voice.

    one of my favourite groups,

    oooo so so beautiful karen,

their songs are sadest and so sticky.

  • mmm

  • I have to say, among all of the Karen Carpenters songs, that has haunted my ears for years, and has filled my eyes with tears, and my heart with love and sorrow, this song is perhaps my Favorite of all time. I just don't know why. I love so many like I do this one. It just goes straight through my heart and soul, like a knife. Just absolutely awesome. But as much as I try, there are no words that can begin to comprehend, and give justice to Karen Carpenter's songs, and her haunting voice.

  • Beautifully spoken. I miss her so much

  • I love this song, and I love the way Karen sings it. Her voice gives this song the classic sound that this is supposed to have, even though the video and audio quality is very poor.

  • Wow, I think this is the ULTIMATE Karen Carpenter song.... love to play this one....

  • Hi-i!

I love love love love love this! <3

Thank you, so much, for capturing this.

    Sunshine & Blessings!

  • I love that "BIG" letter K.... The Great Karen Carpenter I mean :)

  • I love this song! But then I know there is a longer version of this song I just can't find it :( mind helping me? Thanks :)

  • God I miss you Karen........

  • @TheOrontes Oh, you knew her?

  • Did you know Karen pushed to release this as a single, but the powers-that-be shut it down? They wanted to go for the more lovey ballads instead. Personally, I think it was a good call by Karen, b/c this song is way catchy.

  • she does the bridge of this song so beautiful and soulful.

  • @RJiminez51 Funny you wrote this........I've always thought that about the bridge in this song. She just 'nails' it beautifully

  • the quality of the video is irrelevant to the quality of her voice =) beautiful !~

  • So true Halo..a beautiful voice, lovely music..a tragic end to such a talented person, her and her brother created such great music.

  • @amber3358 So very true. When I have to come into contact with today's 'music' after listening to Karen Carpenter, I can appreciate the true meaning of the phrase "fingernails down a blackboard."

  • love it and beautiful

  • diana ross covered this, i had no idea Karen did this as well.

  • Why did she have to die???? I always wanted to meet her.

  • beautiful!!! <3

  • Karen, this world is turned upside down. Come give me some lovin'.

  • They just don't sing like this any more. I wish the music industry would start promoting real talent instead of the no-talent half-naked junkie witches they've been throwing in our faces for the last 20 years...

  • No wonder she had an eating disorder! Her wardrobe people should have been fired! OMG! No wonder she thought she was fat the poor woman.

  • From 0:58 to 1:31 - vocal Heaven!! a comforting, nothing is wrong, everything will be all right voice. I've always loved you, Karen.

Note: since this is lip-synched, notice the last vocalized "let me be the one", which Karen actually missed! She almost appears to be holding back a laugh at her mistake (a rarity!).

  • what a romantic song! I loved her then and I love now.

  • I just love her voice so much! Thank you for posting!

  • Hey Kiahna, You don't know much about Karen Carpenters! Look back at her earlier videos! She had beautiful teeth! Her sickness of gaging herself, well, the acid did a number on her teeth. I love Karen soo much, but poor thing had a eating disorder.

  • @madonnaizationn I honestly don't think she would purge herself. Richard had said in an interview that t was highly doubtful that she would do that because purging is like murder to your vocal chords and Karen "took such care of her pipes." Her eating disorder consisted of only not eating, taking laxative and thyroid pills, and excessive exercising...

  • @chrismartinez90 You are also right, but I have on tape interviews of Richard and many different programs such as 20/20, The Karen Carptender Story, and the movie they made about her life. She actually died from heart failure.

  • @madonnaizationn Yes, of courseI know she died of Heart failure, DUE to anorexia nervosa. She had lost so much weight but when she was finally under doctor supervision, they were able to have her gain 30lbs, but that was too much for such a small amount of time which put a harsh restraint on her heart. This is indeed what caused her death. But no, she wouldn't purge herself. She simply wouldn't eat. This video of "Let Me Be The One" was done early in their career in the early 70s.

  • Comment removed

  • @madonnaizationn This video of "Let Me Be The One" was done early in their career in the early 70s. And I have videos and pictures of them from the mid to late 70's, and she's ALWAYS had beautiful teeth, regardless if it was early during her disorder or later. In this video, I truely think it's the lighting or something. If you look at the rst of their videos and pictures you can see for yourself. So all in all, it's the lighting.

  • I wanna be Mr.M 's One too!♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥

    Thanks Karen ♥ ♥ ♥

  • I AGREE WITH YOU kirahna!!

  • There will never be another Karen Carpenter...

  • @PeaceChick07 listen to claire dela fuente

  • i love karen

  • i am an innocent victim

  • have always loved this song

  • back then, true artists with great talents, such as Karen and her brother were NOT superficial like most wannabes, nowadays. Having straight and veneer teeth doesn't make u a great singer! Karen's voice and her songs will always live on with great memories for those of us who truly appreciates her talent. Dental plan or no dental plan! She wasn't superficial like the rest with fake [noses, teeth, boobs, personality] everything, nowadays. RIP Karen!

  • @kirahna The fact is that Karen's teeth were so perfect that she and Richard were continually mocked for their "Pepsodent smiles." In the Ticket to Ride video, the camera does a virtual root canal on Karen that was ridiculously intrusive, but it was ok since she was flawless. So, whomever you are responding toon this with your well-intended defense, is clueless.

  • @Iwakuni8 Yes, and isn't it amazing that someone is "mocked" for having a beautiful smile? It goes to show the direction we have taken when we tolerant the putrid comments from those who mock wholesomeness and goodness.

  • ((((Amazing version of this song )))), go You Tube:

Carpenters - Let Me Be The One

    Thanks Chicpizz209 for posting.

    Karen talks at the end. ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥

  • @mrmalade: give her a rest, dude. she's dead....

  • Thanks for this posting. JUST FANTASTIC.

    R.I.P., Karen.

  • Such a wonderful voice and great drummer, such a tradegy that she could not see her own true beauty, and died trying to become beautiful to all the shallow, superficial people surrounding her.

  • her voice affects me lilke no other female singer. I like Emmy Rossum too. B ut Karen, I would have married and had her to sing to me every night.

  • When I was in High School, girls dressed like this...often their Mothers made the dress...good for heavy petting!

  • to carpenters fan 2003 - I knew Karen personally, since my uncle Bob Messenger was a band member from the beginning to being one of Karens pall bearers. Her dress was !) the style in 1967, & 2) also to hide her disease of anorexia. Ive battled the same disease for 31 yrs. Her voice was truelya gift from God, her disease was a death sentence from the press!! Trust me - I KNOW!!! Summer~

  • I am not going against what your uncle has told you... and I am sure that it was extremely pain for him to lose Karen.. as I have heard that most of the band memebers considered Karen to be like a little sister.. However.. This video was not shot in 1967.. But in around 1971 or so. Not to mention at that point in her life Karen's anorexia had not reered it head. It was not till about 1974 that she really started to suffer from the effects of her anorexia... Just a thought and thank you. Kyle..

  • Continued...

Also I battled with Anorexia and Bulimia myself for 6 years and like Karen I had a heartattack. ( I was 18 years old at the time ) However, as sad as it is to say it, due to Karen's untimely passing I got the help and treatment for my eating disorder and have now been in recovery for close to 16 years..

  • I am happy to hear you have been in recovery for 16 years, as I , too, have been battling Anorexia for 31 yrs. I am in a state of remission at this time, but the disease loves to rear its ugly head during times of undue stress. My last bout was during my divorce 1 1/2 yrs ago. It took a while, but I have found love again, am at a healthy weight, hid my scale, and the numbers game in my head is quiet now. I applaud you for 16 yrs of recovery. Summer~

  • Thank you for your correction on the date. In 1971, her anorexia was an issue, although not known publicly. After a concert, the entire band came to my childhood home. My mom had made chocolate chip cookies, and when Karen ate one, her manager became really upset with her. At that time, she was already rail thin. I witnessed the whole thing, and remember it as if it happened yesterday. Once more ~ Summer

  • I might be mistaken... But I remember from my exhustive rescreach on Karen's personal and professional life I can say that from 1967 to 1973 she was at a "normal" weight of 120 pounds after loosing 25 on the Stillman Water diet. It was in 1974 that she started to get obsessive about her weight and at first started to work out more. This put more muscle on her body and she got very upset. She fired her trainer and then simply started to diet and watch what she was eating... about a year later

  • Continued.. Karen and Richard where out for lunch and he asked her about her weight. Karen said she was at 105 but also made it clear that she was not finished loosing weight. Richard told her she looked fine and didn't need to loose anymore. However that continued and by 1980 Karen was down to about 80 pounds. By the time she was admitted to the hospital she was even lower 77.. What caused her heart to stop beating was the sudden gain of 30 pounds by IV drip. and within 5 months she was gone.

  • @Carpentersfan2003 I think you are closer to the truth, although Bob Messenger's nephew undoubtedly calls it as he recalls it. The best on-line evidence is the video of the C's Holland concert in 1974, in which Karen is not only beautiful and glowing, but quite healthy and not at all bony. The 1975 Only Yesterday video shows her grown much slimmer, but still extremely pretty and not yet gaunt. But from there she wasted away. But her unmatched vocals live on for us all.

  • Isn't it wonderful to watch and listen to the video of someone as talented as Karen Carpenter and also read intelligent, thoughtful comments from people who are adults and appreciate both her divine sound and the nostalgia of that time? It's a pleasure to be in the company of peers.

  • @Halo101st yes she was incredible.

  • @Halo101st Yes! No bickering or diatribe, just a genuine appreciation of their music.

  • @Halo101st Amen, & Amen. I do not understand the vitriole posted on many videos (Carpenters & otherwise). Let the music grab your heart, & restore memories of your youth/more innocent time. I understand in reality that human nature is fallen, and there was no real "innocent" time, but the older I get, the more I want to go back.
