I dont get what you mean at a right angle, since the star is right under the box, and you could just run stright then do 2 jumps, and then the last jump on the box to grab it.

go to www.gamefaqs.com. I think it has something to do with the moneky giving it to you. Go and interact with the monkey by that long that you have to weigh down on one side. I think you have to punch the moneky, Mario picks him up, the moneky takes your hat, you have to then catch him (much like that yellow rabbit) and then he gives you the star from the cage.

I'm not so sure how to get it atm but if I played then yeah. And anonymouspunk2, in the N64 version there is a wingcap, it's one of the most famous SM64 items, also the wingcap for this level if I remember correctly is under one of the cliffs.

ok i can get that star no problem , go on the switch run away and start a triple jump and at the thrid jump jump on the box and u should reach the star, ok so don't be stupid :/
