@spilledinsanity This is from The Long Black Veil cd by the Chieftains. Excellent collaborations with Sinead, Van Morrison, Sting, Rolling Stones, Marianne Faithfull, Mark Knopfler and Ry Cooder. Just played the cd this morning, but wanted to this song in my playlist here.
Great rendition, love sinead's voice! - To patriot1775 - I hear what you're saying brother but all i would say is, it's not about religion, or shouldn't be, sadly!! It's about a national identity that was cynically diluted by a fearfull and narrow minded English aristocracy in the early C17th in a desparate bid to cling onto a land that was never theirs' in the first place.... Erin go bragh
No matter your country, if you cannot appreciate the heart alone or the courage, then you have no soul or valor. Without which you are no better than dogs.
I'm a true Irishman, born and bred. But i'm a Protestant, and have been called a HUN so many times I am sick of hearing it.This is an society that does not include me,and I am so sorry for the people moving to this country. This should be a Republic that includes me and my family, but my family does not feel part of it...........
@daharkin hi mate, i am not Irish, but I do think you look at it too pessimistic. I have spoken with many Irish republicans (incl. catholics and non-) who do not judge and despise Protestant Irish. I don't want to teach or preach Irish people about their own culture and affairs.... But I can see where you are coming from.... and also all the confusion and mis conception. can you explain to me in what ways you don't ' feel part ' of it? you and your family from Belfast? or Dublin? Greetings
@daharkin That is truly disheartening to hear your words! As a 2nd generation Irish R.C. I think it is extremely ignorant of these people to call u a 'hun' and as for your religion, that is a matter of your own personal choice, as is the right of any human being!! First and foremost, in your own words, you are an Irishman born and bred and you should be proud of this fact.! 1 day all Irish people will realise that their national identity is the glue that should bind them fast - NOT religion!
9 dislikes? There are 70 or so on the other upload! Sad fuckwit bastards. If only the Scots and the Irish and the Welsh had always backed each other up when fighting the fucking English, things might be very different today.
@NeMeImpuneLacessit why does everything have to be political? Maybe they just think the songs sucks, in which case they're fucking retards cuz its the best ever! But still relax guy
and we'll be west nigeriastan. whats the difference? our leaders are bringing us down the same path of destruction even though the british are now realising it was all a huge mistake. at least at the time they threw open the borders they didnt know how it would turn out... our thick fucking leaders only have to open their eyes to see that long term mass immigration policies lead to the destruction of the native population. Fuck the EU and their colonisation of ireland.
@pamongan1 repubulican til i die my friend. but in these hard times the English have proven to be an asset cos ireland whom i represent r an embarrassment but still i love. my (English is atrocious) but fuck sake how can my country proclaim to be a country when their not self sufficient and have to borrow money of the EU
@NeMeImpuneLacessit Probably not. You can say what you like about the English but we always kick arse. That's why we have always dominated the British Isles, and the world.
@MattMystrieo You never did "always" dominate the world. England wasn't much until the Tudors muscled in. Your Empire was big, but it wasn't the only one, remember? And you lost it, remember that, too? Nothing lasts forever. Peace. I happen to like the English I've known. Well, most of them.
@TiocfaidhArIa It was more of a joke really.. But no it wasn't the only big one, however it was the biggest in history. And it was never really "lost" as much as given up because of the finanical toll WW1/WW2 had. Although I believe the demise of the Empire (like all) was a good thing, I agree the idea of imperialism is morally wrong, it's good that it's gone. And that's great, I like most of the Irish I've met in my life (my own grandparents included). I'm sorry if you got the wrong impression.
@MattMystrieo True, it sure was big, but didn't last as long as the Romans. Yes, WW2 put an end to that stuff- one country after another like dominoes falling. However, as I travelled in India, I was grateful for the Empire! Most people spoke English and the railway system is superb. I don't think imperialism is gone- we now have the Pax Americana currently subduing fractious natives and pursuing a policy of draining the swamps in the Middle East. Where are your grandparents from?
Also true and a fair point I suppose you can't really argue the 'best' Empire. Yea undoubtably the Empire did some good things, but I would argue the price was too high. The death of entire languages, religions, culture, even people. Any ideology that can support any form of genocide is wrong and that is what imperialism ultimatly did. I don't think you can say current US forgein policy is the same as classic-imperialism. Maybe a form of neo-imperialism, but not in the same sense
@MattMystrieo True indeed, however, when compared to the utter barbarity of the Spanish, I think the Brits look like pussies by comparison. Anglicanism probably played a role in that- civilise and Christianise rather than wholesale blatant murder, but again, the old recipe never alters- first, the missionaries, then the money, then the guns. In the case of Ireland, I can see why England was the way she was- needing a garrison to protect her western arse from the Spanish and the French
@MattMystrieo continued: Also there was the now largely forgotten slave trade indulged in by Irish raiders on the western coast of England, stealing people to be sold in the north African slave marts, and I guess crushing Ireland was one way of telling the locals that their enterprising activities were not widely appreciated! There is no culture or nation which is blameless in its treatment of other people- we have all done execrable things throughout history.
@MattMystrieo Quite agree about the Yanks, their imperialism is of a covert sort. I hate what they did in Vietnam, using that sad little country as a testing ground for frightful weapons- not that I am any fan of communism- far from it!!
Had you actually stopped to think before thumping out your angry message on here, you might have realised that some of the thumbs down probably come from people who prefer a different version of this song, rather than this one. Not everyone who dislikes this song is some English bastard. I'm half Irish, half English and I don't know anyone who dislikes Ireland, let alone an Irish song. Stop taking umbrage and living in the past and think before you post.
@NeMeImpuneLacessit Do you not stop to think that it's prejudice such as this that hinders things rather than helps them? I take offense when you talk about my country like that.
brillian brilliant song about a very inportant time for our country. never gone never forgotten!
Ireland can never see peace until we have one country once again! we mat never see it in our life time but one day the brave heroes of 1916s work will be finished
HAHA yeah in your imaginary world all this is true... America needs england or it will loose a war...ok... not last a week?... Fuck the british... LAMES ... the most pathetic thankless nation ever...its a good thing that Hitler never got his hands on them... they kissed American ass and got saved... the Irish had it right all along!
I love this version. There's a lot more emotion put into this version than the Luke Kelley one imo, that one is just whiny and flat out annoying as hell. The faster driving version by the Young Dubliners is good as well.
Are you kidding me? Kelly's rendition is full of emotion and his singing is as close to perfect as you'll get. Sinead's/Chieftain's version is genius as well, but I just gave the Young Dubliners' cover a listen and it's shocking. No emotion whatsoever, they turned a traditional masterpiece into an empty cacophony.
The song is about Freedom...The Irish Parliamentary Party (IPP) was split between Home Rule within the British Empire, or true Independence. In 1912 the British granted Home Rule. This was postponed by ww1. As a greater number supporting home rule became opposed to the wars slaughter. The move for true independence grew. A faction called the Irish Republican Brotherhood IRB began to prepare for a revolt against British dominance. Easter Sunday 1916 they made there stand.
why does everyone get so political on coments its stupid to do its a song thats why it was posted and if u dont like the song dont intentionly listen to it
well the thing is this song was just freshened up with an amazing sound and you get the real feeling of war annd the sorrow of losing soldiers on a battlefield and you get the real feeling of how tragic it was back in that time
and how do you know its not suppose to be preformed like this????? o youre pretty much saying people dont have a right to show they do love the song but want to express it in their versian of music and that sinead o conner did a marvelous job but you and other people like you have to poo poo on everything when they did make an awesome versian of a folk song
Plastic Paddy is a term for people like yourself who play up their 'Irishness,' fair enough she has her freedom to make a version of the song but I was giving my OPINION, and this song isn't about 'pain and suffering' it's about the pride this man felt watching the whole nation rise against the British empire, the most powerful in the world at the time, "the world it gazed in deep amaze" It's paying tribute to the men who died to get rid of British rule not a crying session.
@aonymous2010 i guess you could concider me a plastic paddy. i have irish blood in me but i dont know that much about irish history, never been there, dont even have an accent lol. but i enjoy knowing im part irish. i dont walk around wearing green trying to float my liver and fight ppl though lol im not that badd.
this was the perfect thing to hear right before Dropkick Murphys started playing. Saw 'em in Dallas 3/1, first time to hear this song--it was beautiful.
I disagree, this song is a dirge for the dead. You don't even think of the men who died for freedom, just some fucking band from Boston (who've done nothing of merit).
I was just at my first Murphy's (& Swinging Udders) concert in Boston before St. Patties. Personally, I thought their playing this was disrespectful and self-serving as hell. Also? Playing a real heartfelt song that powerful for this many generarations before their act just makes them seem tripe.
@analisette the last time I saw them.. which was in Grand Rapids, they did the same thing.. played this before starting their set. DKM is my favorite band.. I hope they come back soon.
@analisette Oh Yes. I've seen the Dropkick Murphys twice. And when the Foggy Dew comes on, I would get this chill, like the calm before the storm. Because you knew the place was about to explode. Sadly, lately, they have been opening with Thin Lizzy's "The Boy's are back in town." I hope this passes soon.
I listened to this song in civilization class this year, and i found it amazing. I also studied Irish history and the Troubles, and this was really interresting... I really like the culture of this country and its artists...
my ancestors are irish and also english i play this similar to this verson in a club near home let me say the english soldiers , one of whom is one of my ancestors who was killed in the 1st world war was sent to ireland during the easter uprising albeit only for a week, what you have to remember it was the southern english military who made the ordinary english soldiers go to ireland a bit like what is going on in afghanistan and iraq right now
Wow, for 3/5 of a second i actually felt sorry for the English. Having no martyrs. but then thinking how many they have actually created through their expansionist policies. Bugger them...
The Brits have had martyrs...what about Boudicea, her family and others who rebelled against Roman rule?
I'll admit that the Brits have often made martyrs out of their own people--Sir Thomas More; Becket; the Protestant martyrs under "Bloody Mary's" rule; the loyal English Catholics under Cromwell...and others who opposed injustice by a king, queen or parliament..
Imperialism, like other "-isms" often make martyrs out of the locals. Look at the deaths by the 20th Century's "-isms"
I heard this for the first time last friday when we listened to it in a class and I loved it. I'm American but I'm of Irish descent and I'm extremely proud of that fact.
@nakala1972 By imported I assume you mean settled by their own free will in Ireland hundreds of years ago? Furthermore why does it matter if they are of British (mainland) decent? Unless you want to encourage racial profiling, why does it matter? (I am under the assumption you do not want to encorage thatm, and are not a "racist").
@MattMystrieo no I am not racist! you speak as though Ireland is part of Britain. It is not! The importation I am talking about i the British encouragement of Protestants to settle in northern Ireland to secure their influence there. The settlers may have come of their own free will but they were doing so for the crown not the betterment of Ireland.
@nakala1972 So why does it even matter where people decended from? The fact of the matter is, now they are N.I citizens and they have a right to thier view and vote. They are just as Irish as anyone in the Republic. Regardless of decent.
@nakala1972 You're right. English (not British) foreign policy has always been divide and rule. Also in Ireland. And look at the mess this has caused all over the world. We can't blame the Ulstermen of today for yesterday's blunders, but I fail to see why they (as people of Scottish descent) are still loyal to the Crown. If they want to be regarded as Irish then they should be loyal to Ireland.
@Dominotheturtle Northern Ireland is home on the island of Ireland. And the 'huns' you talk of are Irishmen and Irishwomen who are not roman catholic.Do you know how insulting this word is to people who just want to make Ireland a better place, both North and South.(how do you feel about using the n word about black people;think about it)

A faction called the Irish Republican Brotherhood IRB began to prepare for a revolt against British dominance. Easter Sunday 1916 they made there stand.

@onlyme373 The Easter Rising of 1916. The IRA proclaimed an Irish Republic in Dublin and kept the British Army out for the rest of the week.

Plastic Paddy is a term for people like yourself who play up their 'Irishness,' fair enough she has her freedom to make a version of the song but I was giving my OPINION, and this song isn't about 'pain and suffering' it's about the pride this man felt watching the whole nation rise against the British empire, the most powerful in the world at the time, "the world it gazed in deep amaze" It's paying tribute to the men who died to get rid of British rule not a crying session.

this was the perfect thing to hear right before Dropkick Murphys started playing. Saw 'em in Dallas 3/1, first time to hear this song--it was beautiful.
analisette 1 year ago 19
@analisette

@analisette They played in Grand Rapids a few years ago and it was the same this. Absolutely awesome.

The 1916 Easter uprising in Ireland.

my ancestors are irish and also english i play this similar to this verson in a club near home let me say the english soldiers , one of whom is one of my ancestors who was killed in the 1st world war was sent to ireland during the easter uprising albeit only for a week, what you have to remember it was the southern english military who made the ordinary english soldiers go to ireland a bit like what is going on in afghanistan and iraq right now

Wow, for 3/5 of a second i actually felt sorry for the English. Having no martyrs. but then thinking how many they have actually created through their expansionist policies. Bugger them...
Taffy064 2 years ago 4
The Brits have had martyrs...what about Boudicea, her family and others who rebelled against Roman rule?
I'll admit that the Brits have often made martyrs out of their own people--Sir Thomas More; Becket; the Protestant martyrs under "Bloody Mary's" rule; the loyal English Catholics under Cromwell...and others who opposed injustice by a king, queen or parliament..
Imperialism, like other "-isms" often make martyrs out of the locals. Look at the deaths by the 20th Century's "-isms"

@MattMystrieo because of the imported British protestants! I Know people from Derry who want nothing more than to see one Ireland! 26+6=1!
nakala1972 1 year ago
@nakala1972 By imported I assume you mean settled by their own free will in Ireland hundreds of years ago? Furthermore why does it matter if they are of British (mainland) decent? Unless you want to encourage racial profiling, why does it matter? (I am under the assumption you do not want to encorage thatm, and are not a "racist").
MattMystrieo 1 year ago
@MattMystrieo no I am not racist! you speak as though Ireland is part of Britain. It is not! The importation I am talking about i the British encouragement of Protestants to settle in northern Ireland to secure their influence there. The settlers may have come of their own free will but they were doing so for the crown not the betterment of Ireland.
nakala1972 1 year ago
@nakala1972 So why does it even matter where people decended from? The fact of the matter is, now they are N.I citizens and they have a right to thier view and vote. They are just as Irish as anyone in the Republic. Regardless of decent.
MattMystrieo 1 year ago
