I met a black mamba once. She wasn't what I'd call "aggressive" - nervous, yes, but not the sort to come chasing after you or anything. I've heard of people supposedly being "chased" by snakes, but inevitably either the story is lacking in credibility, or it turns out the snake was just trying to get the person to leave (and not actually trying to catch them). Why would a mamba want to chase a human? We're too big to eat; even giant pythons that could eat a grown human will try to crawl away.

They could kill you, but they'd rather kill a nice tasty rat or something. Even the deadliest snakes don't like to waste their precious venom on something they can't eat. They'll try to escape or defend themselves in other ways first: a defensive bite is a last resort for most snakes (although some are quicker to bite than others).
