  • I love when Mr. Warmth and Dino are sitting near or next to each other on the dais. They laugh their asses off together and really seem to be great friends.

  • wow now thats comedy and talent... I miss the real stars of Hollywood. not the trash we have today

  • this guy is excellent at doing burt lancaster, fantastic

  • I think frank doing Burt is fantastic .love this ,.these guys had talent.tk

  • THE LATE GREAT FRANK GORSHIN WAS A TRUE WONDER, HIS IMPRESSIONS WERE STUNNING, ESPECIALLY HIS BURT LANCASTER!

  • I loved this frank is fantastic you would think it was Burt .frank had so much talent great video.tk

  • @blancmel21 :

    YOU ARE SO RIGHT

  • Supreme!

  • Such a classic guy as Frank inpersinating one of the all time greats....awesome.

  • Frank Gorshin = the man.

You know you're good when they're laughing...and you haven't started your act yet.

  • WHAT IS THAT PUNCH LINE ??? I can't understand what he's saying ...wish I could.

  • @tindoor38 "Do the name Ruby Begonia mean anything to ya?"

  • Great Freudian slip when he says he instead of she , notice how they all grabbed his arm at that moment. They all knew what Burt's fans didn't.

  • @CountThrillhammer I'm thinking you meant a "great *deliberate* Freudian slip" (as it wasn't a slip) since, as you mentioned, Burt's bisexuality was no secret in Hollywood.

  • Wow! Who'da thought that watching 'Return To The Batcave' would lead me to finding this...one of the great comics/impressionists doing one of my favourite actors!

  • frank gorshin and gene kelley were from the same neighborhood in pgh. pa.

  • The comic who was sitting at 1:01-1:03, in the dark jacket, who is he?

  • @captainamerica1967us That looks likeJan Murrey to me,he was the play by play guy in The 1974 version of the longest yard.

  • The original roasts were private affairs at the Friar's Club in Hollywood ... and there, they had no constraints ... they might've been class acts, but they loved the freedom of no censorship there, and it was raw. I saw a few, and they were so funny you would miss half of it because you were laughing so hard.

  • He did a good job with that one!

  • if you can make Don Rickles pee his pants like this, it's FUNNY! Frank Gorshin was one of the finest impressionists EVAH! RIP - and thanks bobfeg - for this treasure. There simply is NO comedy like this anymore since everything is f-this and f-that. When Pryor did it - then it WAS funny. But anymore - it's simply a lack of skill and a loss of verbal acuity.

  • Back when roasts actually had talent...AND...were funny...

  • @blancmel21 -- I totally agree! The old Dean Martin and Friars Club roasts were hilarious. The roasts currently seen on Comedy Central are as boring as infomercials for bogus investment schemes.

  • @blancmel21 I agree!

  • Don and Dean are plastered.

  • Frank was a great hidden talent...Dean must have pee'd himself..

  • Frank was a great hidden talent...

  • When doing an impression, the sound is the hardest thing to mimic. But Gorshin's got both Lancaster's sound AND facial DOWN!!

  • @wannawatchu66 Yes....i just RELIVED this moment..(i saw ALL the Friar's roasts from 1967 onward).and i have to agree, that Frank Gorshin has captured the very essence of BURT LANCASTER ! I do impressions myself, and have NEVER heard such a chilling, spot-on imitation ! Gorshin does Burt Lancaster better than Burt Lancaster does ! Look at Don Rickles extraordinary reaction in this classic slice of American comedy, and Gorshin hasnt even started !!!

  • THE LAUGH IS SPOT ON!

  • No small feat to make Don Rickles crack up.

  • This KILLS me ! ; funny as FUCK

  • Had no idea what was going on but laughed my head off.

  • @cheshirevan Frank is mimicking actor Burt Lancaster from 'From Here To Eternity' movie

  • That was DEAD ON! Wow I miss these shows!

  • @bigscarytigermonster I miss these people

  • @wolfkarel So do I. Really, so do I.

  • Gold. Pure Gold.

  • he played the riddler in the old batman series with adam west as batman, brilliant impersenator / impressionist

  • he played the riddler in the old batman series with adam west as batman, brilliant impersenator / impressionist

  • Talent indeed, the man was thee best Riddler. Anyone see Freedie Prinze?

  • frank gorshin is a genius

  • The man at 1:02 is Jan Murray - comedian.

  • best burt lancaster impression ever!!

  • @neurobloc Agreed and Kirk Douglas too.

  • i like watching these dean martin roasts to see who is still alive

  • That is so, so dead on. Gorshin was a scream.

  • That is Jan Murray at 1:02.

  • That is Jan Murray at 1:02.

  • The fellow at 1:02 is comedian, Jan Murray. Did Treasure Hunt and Dollar A Second Game shows in the late 50's on ABC. Borscht Belt humor. Also did quite a few Hollywood Squares. Very funntyand very underrated,

  • Yeah, celebs in those days were okay. But they don't hold a candle to today's Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber, and Kanye West.

  • If you can find another vid roast...

that has Martin laughing as much as he

    does here...

    I'd like to see it.

  • @frickadele Search "Dean Martin roasts Michael Landon pt 2".

  • @frickadele Search for: Dean Martin roasts Michael Landon pt 2

  • I could be wrong, but I believe Frank was referring to Man Tan Moshe Dayan. Not man Tan Moreland. For me he clearly says Mo(sh)e Dayan with an SH not OR. Moshe Dayan B.may 20,1915-D.Oct.16, 1981. was an Israeli Leader & Politician. He was the 4th chief of staff of the Isreali Defense Forces from 53-58. Eventually becoming Foreign Minister of Israel. Known for a missing Left eye, when a french bullet struck his binoculars in WW2. He wore an eye patch ,like sammy . He was also Jewish like sammy.

  • @Dakers11

    Mantan Moreland...

was a stereo typical black character.

Moshe Dayan was a one eyed Jew.

Put that all together and you have Sammy...

    and the joke.

Why did you think Mantan Moshe Dayan was one

    real name?

  • This comes from a time when people could actually laugh at themselves. "The Riddler" had an immense amount of talent. R.I.P.

  • It's fun to watch Don Rickles crack up.

  • too good

  • Does anyone know where I can find a video of Frank Gorshin doing his Kirk Douglas impression? If you thought his Burt Lancaster was good , his KD will knock your socks off!

  • @jackhole39 try frank gorshins official website there is a dvd of 3 nights in las vegas and other material is run by his friend says the only place to get this material check it out

  • @MrGrandoleopry Thanks for the info.Very much appreciated! Merry Christmas.

  • @jackhole39 Up to reading your comment here l was just about to say the same. Gorshine's Kirk Douglas had to be seen to be believed..not just the voice,..his face changed and he actually became Kirk. l was hoping it was included here, but,no such luck. He did a pretty uncanny Bob Mitchum too as l recall. l too would dearly love to see his Kirk Douglas sketch just one more time.

  • Frank was so freakin talented..man!

  • only phyllis is still alive....

  • @darrylhaynes don rickles isnt dead :S

  • yes he is...he just wont lay down...lol

  • @darrylhaynes hehe :)

  • Comment removed

  • I think the guy at 1:02 was Jack Carter, a Las Vegas comedian popular in the 1970s.

  • That's a very, very good impression

  • I loved Frank Gorshin when I was a child.

  • if they asked to roast me back in the day, i would've said YES in a heartbeat. if they asked to roast me today, i would be like FUCK NO AND GET OUT OF MY SIGHT!!!

  • Unlike the recent celebrity roasts (William Shatner, David Hasselhoff), these gatherings had comedians who didn't have to resort to mean-spirits or toilet humor to get a quick laugh. These guys were class-acts, had unique styles and deliveries but also a good sense of comraderie to know it was all in good fun. What a shame comedy had to change for the worst.

  • @HerrEllsworth

    youtube

Dean Martin E! True Story Biography part 7

    At time...6:00.

  • @HerrEllsworth True, but remember, these were aired during the "family hour" during the 1970s, and the ones now air at a late hour on Comedy Central. What some people don't realize is that the Friars Club Roasts, the ones that were privately-held and had some of these legendary actors and comedians on the dais were actually filthy and, uh, naughtier :)

  • @HerrEllsworth I cannot "Like" your comment enough.

  • @HerrEllsworth well said.

  • @HerrEllsworth Thank you, thank you! I am always looking for comedy from this era and earlier, as it was "really funny" for all the reasons you have mentioned. When I recently saw the roast of William Shatner, I had to stop watching it as it was so bad. Those people don't even know what funny is.

  • @HerrEllsworth unfortunately, bathroom humor is the best u will get when people have no talent.

  • @renascencewoman Funny is funny regardless of the language they use. They do have talent but you must have delicate ears.

  • @HerrEllsworth The tone is decidedly different nowadays, but these broadcasts are cleaner versions of the Friar's Club roasts which were ALWAYS blue. If you find a CD called, "Celebrities at Their Worst", one of the volumes is a roast of Humphrey Bogart. Granted the tone is milder than now, but still not quite ready for broadcast. As for comedy nowadays, you have to look harder, but there are still some good ones that aren't foul. Rita Rudner, Larry Miller and Steven Wright spring to mind.

  • Jan Murray at 1:02

  • What does Frank say at the end of his skit after he says "who is she?"

  • The late Frank Gorshin's Burt Lancaster was as good as celebrity imitations got. He did an excellent Richard Burton, too.

  • frank gorshin also did great impressions of kirk douglas and broderick crawford

  • @owg59 Saw him many years ago doing an impression of Burt Lancaster doing an impression of Kirk Douglas, and Kirk Douglas doing an impression of Burt Lancaster,I was in stitches.

  • the guy at 1:02 is Jan Murray

  • Wow! His Lancaster impression is flawless!

  • people genuinely seem to laugh those days! These days ppl look a lot over the shoulders and laugh out of embarrassment!

  • Gorshin's Burt Lancaster is 100/100-PERFECT!

  • phyllis diller looks tame here. cute

  • @akackley1

I 'think', Dean is telling Frank to 'keep it going'.......

  • Hilarious.

  • Dead-on perfect!

  • That's priceless!

  • Jan Murray is the guy at 1:02

  • @xMissxMadisonx Jan Murray was the proto-typical game show host, who was also a stand-up comedian w/ some decent one-liners. A real pro w/ the studio audience. But he was, along with Gene Rayburn and Bill Cullen, the only reason to watch the shows since the games were lame. There's a BBC show called "QI" which is damned good. Cullen was amazing IMO, Groucho even had a game show.

  • This is great--Funny, I was thinking "What is this? Celebrity Roast?"

I didn't know they had this show before. Good stuff, they should re-air them

  • This particular roast had to one of the best roasts...

because people were almost rolling in the isles with laughter.

    Gorshin was awesome.

  • Super - The Best !!!!!!! -- ( most stuff on TV now I can't watch -just does'nt have it ) --Thanks for posting this Great vid .

  • All the ignorant, self-appointed pop culture historians who explained the "Man Tan" reference below got it completely wrong. The real scoop: ManTan was a popular drugstore product that you rubbed on your skin to simulate an instant suntan. It was popular and well-advertised in the fifties and sixties, but was yanked from the stores years ago.

  • @darwin221 "Man Tan" Moreland was a well-known black comedic actor known for his crazy bulging eyes when he got "spooked" in light thrillers. Yes, Mantan was a rub-on tanner that was popular for about 5 minutes in the '60's...as soon as you went in the pool, it would turn your skin color to orange. George Hamilton may have used it, too. Not ignorant nor self appointed, just lived thru those times. How about you?

  • He nailed it! ("YOU LOVED IT!!")

  • Frank was awesome, his Kirk Douglas was equally good .

  • my god don rickles was DYING!

    LOLOLOLOLOL

  • ghosts on film

  • I just have to give Frank Gorshin my admiration. He was the greatest impressionist I ever saw. Back in the 60's, 70's when I went from childhood to adulthood. This man was awesome. There was'nt any celebrity that he could'nt impersonate/mimic. He was the king of impressionist. Followed closely by George Kirby, in the 70's by Rich Little, F.G.played the Riddler or the Joker on the Batman t.v. show of the 60's; he was in Meteor Man film in the 90's.

  • @amory0115 Gorshin was definitely THE Riddler. :)

  • @AarHan3

Frank Gorshin OWNS The Riddler just like Sean Connery OWNS "Bond, JAMES Bond".

  • Spot on!

  • Who on earth is the guy at 1:02? I don't recognize him at all, and I was around back when this thing was on. Anyone have a clue?

  • @kagasan2008 Jan Murray

  • @bobfeg Ah. Thanks, bob.

  • @kagasan2008 Jan Murray. . .

  • @kagasan2008 Jan Murray!

  • @kagasan2008

jan murray...a game show host from the late 50's and early 60's

    rich from MA

  • @kagasan2008 Hes the riddler out of the original BATMAN...CMON MAN

  • @kagasan2008

Jan Murray, a stand up comic and actor

  • @kagasan2008

    You don't get it...

He was referring to Diller - as in Mz Diller...

    As a HE...

    Hence the laughter.

'Cause she'd be easily mistaken for...

  • @kagasan2008 It's Jan Murray

  • @kagasan2008 Jan Murray

  • @kagasan2008 that is Gene Barry. I'm 55 and only know him from the gameshow "what's my line" and I think he did the Gong Show a few times.

  • @kagasan2008 A comedian named Jan Murray.....

  • This is just amazing!

  • That gold!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Dean makes hand gestures a number of times in this clip. Anyone know what that's about?

  • @akackley1

Burt Lancaster often made those same hand motions.

  • @bobfeg

Thank you. I never noticed that before. I'll pay more attention the next time I watch one of his films.

  • @akackley1 Thats sign language for Burt's "Carrying on" nature probably lol

  • @akackley1 He was probadly ordering another Martini.

  • OMG His is the greatest Lancaster impression EVER!!!! Lmao!!!

  • Hilarious. One of the funniest clips I have ever seen. Truly. That was Burt Lancaster all right!

  • Frank Gorshin's most famous impressions were Dean Martin, Burt Lancaster, Kirk Douglas, Richard Burton and Richard Widmark. When he played the Riddler he was actually doing Widmark as Tommy Udo from the film Kiss of Death.

  • If you closed your eyes Gorshin sounded more like the actors than anyone else. But whatever you do, don't open your eyes when he is doing his impersonations because he looks like an opossum in the eyes. Lol

I think that that was the funniest part. That was his "hook" and I am sure that he did that for effect.

  • Wow!! I miss Frank Gorshin...crazy bastard. Lol

  • I agree with the other you tube viewers, Gorshin was the best Burt Lancaster I have seen . Those Dean Martin Roasts were the best! Great comedy.

  • he is making fun of lancaster's bisexuality

  • @tumadoireacht ...dream on, pal. Burt was about as interested in men as I am in giraffes. Stop trying to drag these long deceased actors into your sick little 2010 world. For shame!

  • @LawrenceDavis you must love giraffes ! do you think homosexuality was invented last year ? lancaster liked oysters and snails to quote another ac/dc lad olivier - have you led a sheltered life or are you in denial about something ?hmmmmmm

  • @tumadoireacht ...Burt was NOT a switch hitter, you poor misguided soul, and it's too bad he's not still around to put your lavender lights out!

  • @LawrenceDavis methinks the lady doth protest too much !-your pejorative term and mention of violence only makes me more convinced that you are concealing feelings or actions of your own BL was a well documented supporter of gay rights but if you get some comfort from denying it -dream on-was it his muscles or his smile that did it for you -many heroes were bi ! alexander the great.roger casement,da vinci, and hundreds of actors

  • Comment removed

  • @macman237 is that your secret fantasy -shagging lassie ?-funny how the anal sex part is the bit you good hole boys always home in on - squeal like a labrador boy -did you never give your girlfriend one up the brown river or perhaps you preferred to take it like a man when she wore her big ole strap on

at least lancaster had more sense and more tolerance whatever he got up to

  • nicely happy-lee gay

  • Dana Carvey does the best Lancaster

  • Hands down, Gorshin did the best Lancaster. Man, the Dean Martin roasts were simply the greatest. Comedians back then had to truly be funny without all the filth thats used today. Nobody today even comes close to these people here.

    God rest all their souls!!!

  • GOOOOOOOOOD IMPRESSION

  • Lol Don and Dean have completely lost it.

  • I KNOW god I can't help but grin from ear to ear watching them die laughing. Makes me deeply happy in a way I can't fully explain. Their comfort and camaraderie onstage was just awesome.

  • I agree. hands down. They really got into Gorshin's impression. it seems so much so that it was probably building up and they couldn't wait for Gorshin's turn to hit the podium.

  • Aw, this was real comedy. I miss the talent. Great post. 10+ stars!

  • Interesting how a roast, done by folks that loved Sammy, could illicit such an interesting debate all these years later.

  • both of you shut up already..... retards

  • And when you speak for yourself one would think you would use "I" especially when you are using your native language and English isn't a second language as it is for me. Perhaps you would like to get up off your ass and help your own nation in the middle east win so all countries there will win? I am up all night and day many days watching my patrol. You are there flapping gums and fingers. However, writing to you does help keep me awake!

  • @Bidil6 I appreciate that you are somewhat articulate in at least 2 languages. I am not trying to insult you, I can only speak one. But we've gotten away from the main topic of Sammy's roast. It's possible that you may not perceive racism and it's subtleties as I do, and if we travelled to each other's country, there would be a lot to learn about customs and certain words and mannerisms to avoid. Being "pc" is a recent label for being polite. Racism still exists here, even on You Tube. Peace.

  • @Bidil6 the self justification of invading soldiers and their camp-followers is a triumph of the brainwashers art

  • Chubbsuperfly, "we", whom do you refer to when you say "we"? Are you an elected leader of a nation? Perhaps a gov of a state?A mayor perhaps? How do you determine that you are speaking for "we"? Are you not bring prejudise when you think you are speaking for "we", but are really speaking for yourself? "we" lololololol

I am in the mountains of the middle east fighting for america. I am a native to a middle eastern country attached to the 10th Mountain Division. Sleep safe tonight "we"!

  • @Bidil6 don't play that sadsack horseshit with me. sorry you got called to duty but you made a choice, deal with it. You're not protecting me from anybody, you're keeping oil flowing+ making big bux for rich folx. THEY sleep safely, while you're getting shot at or kicking some native family's door down. Get home w/ all your parts, incl. your mind, & don't send your kids into war. BTW, I'm just quoting you re: the use of "we"as in "We say Obama is articulate..." Obama, who voted against the war.

  • To me we are all the same colour, and religion does not really matter, we should all work and live together in this world which is bad enough with natural disasters, deseases etc. There should be more fantastic entertainers as in the 'roasts' today.

  • Chubsuperfly dear, I never would think of expressing the NAZI mentality utter residues! I am meely expressing what Sammy had to put up with on a daily bases. He found the way to do it and it worked. Bless his spirit!

  • @Bidil6 "utter residues?" "meelly" "daily bases"?? What is your native language? This isn't English. Most of your inflammatory posts profess a Nazi mentality, eg: those beginning with "First Jews are a race" and "Sammy is an african"(sic) No, we don't say Obama is articulate bc Shrub's an illiterate dunce, again you've missed the point entirely. Sammy's greatest roles were offstage, tolerating bias + denigration from even his most "enlightened" audiences, and often from his Hollywood "friends."

  • Chubsuperfly I agree with you! However, Sammy's talents were singing and dancing. When you do these two excellently your ego becomes bigger and you want more. So, you think acting is the great next step, but it isn't really. Only your ego needed to act and perhaps you went a step too far. Like we all would do. Sammy had to put up with a whole lot more and he found a way to do it. Bless his heart.

  • We say Obama is articulate because our last president wasn't, you racist thinker you! Do not even mention Albert Einstein and Obama in the same sentances because A.E. was 100 cuts above Obama in intelligence and viable outcome accomplishments. A.E. was little talk and all show; Obama is all talk and no show!

  • Lancaster was not bisexual because bisexuals don't exist. You either suck dick or don't. He wasn't gay either.

  • @Bidil6 Oscar Wilde was bi.Elton John is.Kenny Everett and Freddie Mercury were , etc etc.

  • Sammy is an african and want to be a Jew so he can convince the Jews in movie and television that he is really willing to kiss their fucking smelly Jew bastard's ass in order to stay on top as a black ugly Negro with one eye with lousy acting abilities.

  • @Bidil6 Lovely, and so original. Do we detect a bit of jealousy here, especially re: Sammy's acting abilities? Every day, he put up with small-minded racist losers just to get work. Do just minimal research on working conditions for blacks in the 20th century, esp. during the enlightenment of the '60's, and you may appreciate Davis' accomplishments. The NAZI mentality you espouse may not seem absurd to you but if you had 1/10 the talent, tenacity, and wisdom of Sammy, you'd change your tune.

    ;

  • @Bidil6 some great actors have been one eyed- look at Peter Falk or Leo McKern,Claude Rains,Ry Cooder,

On the smelly question you may be accidentally partially correct -Haredi Jews' hygiene can lag behind 20th century norms

  • First Jews are a race and a religion but is a race because only big nose, jelly bellies, pastrami eating, cream soda, mazzatballs eating, Expensive Club Temple Membership, J. A. P. Loving, salty sable eating, begal face stuffing, physician or lawyer occupation loving, mercedes Benz purchasers, and Christ killers, and all look the same people with the aforementioned characteristics, and massively killed and shunned by every country they live in are Jews.

  • @Bidil6 Those Jews sound like fun - I must have met the boring ones !

  • I am German. Please what is he saying at 0:22 and what is the meaning of it.

    Thank you very much.

What a bunch of gifted people. Rickles is even today always picking very hard on us Germans but who cares?

  • Its kind of an inside joke between them. He is making fun of Sammy being a black jew. Frank, says-" I hate this man tan Moshe Dayan." Man tan is slang for a black person and Moshe Dayan was an Israeli leader. Some of these guy's where the best of friends in their private lives.

  • Thank you very much.

  • Good question. Gorshin is combining two names: Mantan Moreland and Moshe Dayan. The former was a black character actor during the 30s and 40s who played numerous [negative] stereotype roles for African Americans; slow moving, easily frightened, etc. Of course Moshe Dayan was the famous Israeli General. Sammy Davis converted to Judaism for a time, and Gorshin is making fun of his ethnicity and his decision to convert.

  • Thank you. I thought in had something to do with the eye patch of Dayan because Sammy had one too but I guess later on.

  • both Dayan and Davis had lost an eye, both Jews. Gorshin's comment hits on many levels, not being racist, just 'racial' which nowadays would ignite a debate on pc practices. But in the '60's guys like Wilt &Davis were making great strides(get it?) in breaking thru the insidious barriers that still haunt us, witness Obama's racist opposition. Cosby, Dianne Carroll, Ossie Davis, Poitier, Ali, all were subject to soft jabs in public but fought hard behind the scenes for today's civil liberties.
