classical guitars are built differently than regular acoustics. differently made parts in the body and larger necks with the strings more spaced out.

They are the same. Acoustic mean no amplification. Steel string and classical are both acoustics. But i would think most people refer to a steel string as acoustic.

@michaellucarelli classical or guitars have nylon strings - regular acoustics have steel strings. Classical guitars have a wider neck and a higher action. Also the bridge on the classical guitar is a lot different than the one on regukar acoustics as well as the headstock wich has the tunning pegs facing towards the bottom of the guitarand alsdo has two holes along the entire headstock with 6 cilindrical pieces where the strings are atached.

additional info to thebigyeye's question. Nylon Acoustic/classical Guitars have a wider "arm" and a noticeable wider spacing between strings. The fret lay flat.

Steel Acoustic on the other hand has a narrower "arm" and the fret bars lay in curve-convex pattern. I dunno however why the nylon has flat fret and steel has curved fret...

@MrHenkit I wonder if you are asking about the difference between a classical (nylon string) guitar and an acoustic steel string....if so....the differences are just a few...different sized bodies....the classical guitar will generally have a wider neck and fewer frets...and the string tension is low, so there are no truss rods in classical guitars...hoped that helped.

@michaellucarelli the body of a classical guitar is shaped a bit different, when you go in a store and look at guitars you will notice the body of the guitars with the nylon strings are more curved like his. aside from that most of the time the neck is a bit wider and the strings will be further apart. it makes it easier to do songs like this because there is more room to fingerpick.

@thebigyeye21 classical guitarists mainly use their fingers to play (finger picking) but on acoustics it can be harder to do that, so a lot use picks. this doesn't mean you have to use apick on an acoustic, but you could use one on a classical, if you wanted.

as michael said, "acoustic" usually refers to steel string or "Folk" guitars.

Steel string guitars have a steel truss rod in the neck because of the extra tension.

Steel, Folk guitar uses pegs to anchor the strings, Classical, Spanish strings are tied.

Tuning pegs on classical are strung through cutouts in the headpiece, Steel string pegs stick out of the face of the headpiece.

1. a nylon string guitar = classical guitar = spanish guitar

2. a steel sting guitar = folk guitar
