I like the way the 'star spangled banner' was arranged for the olympics, it is nice to hear the anthem without a prima donna singer from american idol singing it. I think many people underestimate the power of the public to sing a song as powerful as this one. That is why my national anthem (UK) is just played and the audience sing. It is much more moving.

This definitely is not my favorite version of the anthem. When we played this growing up in band...the trumpets and percussion are a lot more prominent. I feel like it should be a lot more powerful.

That's because those versions you played are military band oriented; they're boring. This version has more woodwinds and strings and is soften down considerably to reflect the occasions at which it is played--the Olympic games, not the military parade.

the words of the USA anthem are its true strength, the music you might find weak but it is the words of this anthem that give it so much meaning to the Americans, this is why the music is left out and the words alone are sung the majority of the time in the USA at events. beautiful and meaningful lyrics that draw a lot of pride for them
