  • Ill bite. This show is VERY biased toward the US, and that's why i never bought the DVDs. Maybe include something other than the red white and blue bullshit we see everyday on TV. The war DID start before the US intervened. Hell, the Russians are the ones that beat hitler. The US beat the japs for sure, but they didn't beat hitler. Stalin did.

  • @441tfs You're mistaking "focus on American involvement" for "claiming that WWII only started when America entered the fight."

It says a lot about you and others like you, that you always bitch about "American bias" and NEVER say a word about similar cases in the media from other countries. Or even your own.

  • Beeru ippon kudasai!

  • This is a great program and it is very accurate and detailed in the events it details.

There is a lot of criticism here regarding the lack of inclusion of international stories. I would love to see episodes about Hartman, Sakai, Kozhedub, James Johnson, Juutilainen etc., but this is an American channel and I have yet to see anyone questioning the accuracy of the content. The episodes are about very specific events, the criticism here is unfair.

  • This is my cousin, sure am proud of him

  • I like Swede, he is a great guy and makes for a wonderful story, Who is this young jet age Gyrene? He doesn't even belong in the story. He seems like an ok guy, but We need to stick with the graphics the narrator and Swede, don't need Mr. 2 V 1, the hard way. Thanks Gianni

  • You anti-Americans want a dogfight show to star your favorites, you get your own bloody television networks to make one. Its not as you couldn't do so with the average combat flight-sim.

  • I don't know if this has been mentioned yet in this thread but the markings on the SBD in this episode are wrong. During the Battle of the Coral Sea the US marking was a white star in a blue circle with a red central dot, no bars, especially no bars outlined in yellow which was only used for a few months in mid-1943. A pretty glaring error.

  • To Phoenixfromtheshale, NO, I have not nor will I ever read N. Korean textbooks. What are you? A commie? Check your history dude, this IS a factual account. Later he went on to a Hellcat fighter and shot down 7 Nips in 1 dogfight. He won 3 Navy Crosses and numerous other medals. This guy was a member of the greatest generation. He fought & killed so idiots like you could post up your lame commie crap.

  • Guys it is an american show. We cant blame them for showing american stuffs for american audiences. im korean and im enjoying this show very much.

  • Children. It's all very simple. The Germans, the Japanese and the Italians started it, they were wrong, they picked on the wrong people and they well and truly got their asses kicked and didn't survive.

  • It is an exelente programmes as for graphs for computer refers but in my opinion it is a lack of respect those exelentes pilots that leaving of side the ideal erroneous ones for which they were fighting (ami to seem) stopped being good pilots and his histories also develop to be few.

  • "Omg an AMERICAN MADE Television Show is talking about AMERICAN dogfights and Aces! Why don't they talk about the rest of the world!? omg its so much propaganda!"

Seriously, shut the fuck up. I'm sure every other country has shows that talk solely about their own war history, and not the rest of the world.

  • damm i dont know why the americans always put the japanese and german pilots loseing i have never watched a vidoe where it shows the germans and the japanese winning i think its just dumb always watching the japanese and the germans loseing

  • i believe that this has been commented many times, but i think this program it's a great show! but at the same time it's bullshit, many of these..."aces" of history channel have less than 10 kills...where are the experten of the luftwaffe? those dudes were the real badasses!!

  • cool story, bro.

  • I agree. It is also called propaganda!

  • I wonder if he was from sweden originally?

Charles Lindberg and Richard Bong was.

    Swedes rule

  • SBDs on CAP...naval stupidity at its finest. Nice reproduction of the tactics, but they got the U.S. insignia wrong if this is Coral Sea (May 1942): stars did not have white bars but did have red discs inscribed, and there were striped fin flashes. The last two items were removed that very month; at Midway it was white stars only. Tsk tsk History Channel.

  • @zsqpwxxeh You didn't pay attention at 0:38 in the video. Fighters were in short supply. A stupid tactic sure but they didn't have a choice.

  • @over9000christian cool story bro.. go troll somewhere else kthxbai :)

  • Damn straight, exactly what I would of done, hard left, turn to face enemy, and slide/skid to stay out of his guns in a headon. That's real dogfighting, when you are totally outclassed in every kind of way. At three planes, I would of tried to fake them out, and then probably dived for the deck to gain some kind of speed in a bid to put as much distance between me and them. They would of caught up, but by that point they'd all be in a line coming after me, and I'd turn again to face them.

  • so was his gunner dead?

  • @OldCrow001 no his gunner was OK, but the G forces kept him from being able to do much.

  • The Dauntless was a dive-bomber and was 100 mph slower than a Zero. The Zero was the most manuverable fighjter of early WWII. Bombers don't usually stand a chance against ANY fighter, let alone THREE Zeros.

  • @kageykenny But consider the success of the P-40 Flying Tigers with aircraft that was slower and less agile

  • @Sporkmater Actually, if you look closely at the specs, the P-40 was somewhere around 40 MPH faster than the Zero at lower altitudes, and could dive safely at speeds approaching 500 MPH. The Zero was, of course, the most agile fighter in the Pacific at the time, and had incredible range, but due to the thinness of the wing-skin (among other things) it couldn't dive safely at speeds much above 300 MPH. There was also the fact that its over-sized ailerons would essentially lock-up at that speed.

  • @kageykenny that depends on piloting skills and endurance.

  • During WOrld war 2 i think the zero was by far more better than the dauntles. But The Zero was faster more removeable and reliable. THe Daughtles is a good plane. more better for taking on a battle ship. The Zero is more better for dog fight

    !

  • Amazing story. It must have taken a lot of guts, nerves, and brains to get out of that dogfight alive and even more to emerge victorious!

  • the Zero was more agile than almost all the of the planes at that time except for other japanese fighter planes

  • it will be my friend, matter of time

  • why cant game be like this?

  • hey i think they use Il-2 sturmovik 1946 cuase the graphics are exactly the same

  • 4get it. This graphic is a way better. I wish to have a game with such a graphic one day...

  • no cuase if u have the best of the best u can mod the conf.ini file in il-2 directory and make it the best graphics the better ur pc the better u can mod i have a friend with a awsome graphics card and he put everything to the max but his graphics were not good enough so it crashed turns out theer are better and u can actually once u have everything proberly make something with the quality the same as this and who knows could be bette rXD

  • No, just an animation.

1946 you cant go THAT high.

  • :/ oh yeah but all i know is u can make 1946 have as good as quality as that and even better. u just need to ahve the graphics card and know how to and edit the conf.ini file and change everything to max

  • Comment removed

  • Hey me too !!! I wish he was my Grampa too!!! Im not an american but i feel proud of people like him , respect for all ww2 heros

  • why does the rear gunner never fire back?

  • Because he was turning such high Gs that the rear gun would have weighed several thousand pounds.

  • it's already explained in the video .. it's because it's hard to fire @ those maneuvers .. he may hit the tail of the plane..

  • I wish this guy was my grampa so i could shake his hand

  • I love japanese Zero fighter

  • Swede is my xbl gamertag

  • Dogfights is a great show, but it's sooo blinkered and bias!

Seriously, sometimes I watch these things and think it's like something out of a North Korean school textbook - The US media bullshit machine sure cranks it out!

I mean where's the all the RAF aces for the Battle of Britain? The Soviet aces on the Eastern Front? the numerous German Aces (WWI & WWII) The Jap Imperial navy aces of the pacific? etc etc etc

Seriously, great show - but in need of balance and a dose of reality!

  • Seriously, stop acting like you don't get how television works. This isn't a textbook. Enjoy the show, encourage a similar one for the UK market. Plenty of great stories to tell to be sure(&I'd love to see them), but it's not a US basic cable network's responsibility to tell them.

  • Be honest... was the story told on this video & the others not a good story?

I think we earned the right to tell an "America Fuck Yeah!" version of the history of WW2. What was accomplished was no minor feat. All the Allied countries earned the same right. Japan & Germany? Not so much.

These stories are part of our history & I'm glad to hear these stories before these guys are all dead.

This is a basic cable network production & not one from the history department of Harvard or Cambridge.

  • A comprehensive history as you suggest would pretty much give me a boner, but unfortunately in today's attention deficit disorder kind of media environment, such a thing will never make it on a general interest TV network.

  • In the end it doesn't matter, this show isn't on TV any more.

The History Channel is too busy making shows of the world falling apart in CGI & producing stupid shit about ghost,UFO, & monster hunters.

Maybe they'll make another season someday, I think the DVD sales were pretty good. I think they've seen a lot of the feedback about more international stories & if they ever do another season, they'll probably show more of them.

  • Well I got my fingers crossed they'll get another season and get redress the balance.

    Cheers T00ber!

  • @YouT00ber i hear you i wish they would make more documentaries about this world war 2 different wars instead of the stupid UFO crap!

  • @Pheonixfromtheshale Not the only piston engine jet kill. Navy A-1 skyraider shot down a mig-17 in Vietnam in the early 1960's.

  • @Pheonixfromtheshale its business, they show what they think the public wants to see

  • @Pheonixfromtheshale Try watching "Hunters in the Sky". This featured many of the aces from the Army Air Corp, Luftwaffe, Red Air Force, and the Imperial Japanese Navy. It features te late Johannes "Macki" Steinhoff and Adolph Galland, and Erigh Hartmann (Luftwaffe), Johnnie Johnson (RCAF) and Saburo Sakai from

Japan. I think Johnnie is still around, all the rest are gone.

  • @Pheonixfromtheshale There are many other history channel documentaries that cover these events in much greater detail then "dogfights". This is mostly entertainment. I would look into some other history channel series to find what you're looking for. Have you read North Korean text books? all of these events are at least historically accurate lol. This is made for American television, they tend to like to know about their own history.

  • There are videos on all those you just mentioned, they are here in YouTube as we speak. What you are saying is that they are not directly comparing them within the same video as to who was who compare to who.

Well, Chuck Yeager said in one of his interviews long ago, quote; "You can teach any Pilot from any Air Force to be the best Fighter Pilot on earth, if he gets plenty of practice", end quote. Having said that, it goes in line with Politics and the freedom to use your best judgment.

  • @Pheonixfromtheshale Then don't watch American TV programs and encourage the TV production companies in your own country to produce a show like this that focuses on your country's warbirds.

  • @Pheonixfromtheshale

No it is not about all fighter pilots.

It is an American TV program produced to make money by selling advertising time.

I am sure that all countries produce for their own markets.

  • @Pheonixfromtheshale I'm sick of idiots like you who think that Americans have to devote equal time to every over nation in shows like this. Especially with how you sneer at this being "propaganda" or a "bullshit machine."

Yet you don't demand the same thing out of your own nation's media.

Such hypocrisy. You and the seven people who gave you a thumbs up should be ashamed of yourselves.

  • @Pheonixfromtheshale Maybe you should look in the mirror before you tell someone that they're "flying off the handle" and writing "poorly thought out replies," eh?

Your own country is guilty of the same selfish "we won the war" mentality. I can't count how many times arrogant Brits have claimed they fought WWII all on their own while America stayed out and reaped the benefits.

Yet you close-mindedly attack all American media because of a show focusing on American aces.

  • @Pheonixfromtheshale Wow, you're a bigoted asshole.

You claim Americans are "unthinking morons" and that any show focusing on American actions in WWII is "honey glazed star spangled BS," but what of British shows with a British focus, like Richard Holmes' "Battlefields," the BBC's "Spitfire Ace," or the 2000 documentary "RAF Coastal Command?" They're no different to me than "Dogfights," but unlike you, I see no shame in it.

  • @Pheonixfromtheshale I knew you'd dismiss them out of hand, despite your challenge. You're too bigoted, too prideful, to admit that British media can be every bit as selective about what it focuses on as American media.

And just where does "Dogfights" actually claim that America won World War II alone, anyway? All I've seen is a show that just happens to focus on dogfights involving American pilots.

That's hardly the same thing as claiming America won the war!

  • @Pheonixfromtheshale You have claimed that this show is "biased" and part of the "US media bullshit machine," likening it to a North Korean textbook.

And the whole reason you claim this is because the show only talks about American pilots. You don't give a damn whether these American pilots actually did what they said they did; you bitch about "accuracy and truth" only because of the show's focus.

You have no room to accuse others of "flying off the handle."

  • Markings for the SBD Dauntlesses are wrong; at that time, they were overall Medium Gray with Light Gray undersurfaces -- just like the Wildcats -- and still had the star roundel with no bars. Also, the Battle of the Coral Sea wasn't an attempt by Japan to secure the Solomon Islands, rather it was their hope to capture the rest of the island of New Guinea, cutting Australia off from the rest of the Pacific. Success there would have enabled the Japanese to deny the Allies a major base and supply.

  • Because Mein Kamerad, the Nazis lost. Get German TV to make a series glorifying these murdering bastards.

  • This show could make a person believe that the USA had no losses during WW2.

This has to be the only dogfight from this program where Americans are shot down.

The top 50+ fighter aces are German but never any stories about them.

  • Very true. Real History must be told from all sides.

  • If this was the only show you saw about WW2, you might think that. If that's you, & this is the only thing you've ever heard about WW2, please raise your hand.

  • Who wants to hear anything about them

  • Well go on and rape your mind watching dogfights which are more biased than Soviet Agriculture Films during the Stalin Era.

It's sad that you don't want history to be told from all sides. You just want to continue being mind-fucked by US media which will only tell you how good the USA is. Therefore only make programs and films where the USA kicks the shit out of its foes, when in fact the West Allies lost more aircraft and men to Germany than the opposite.

  • OK, you name me one country that regularly makes movies and videos that makes them look like crap, I dare you.

  • Sweden didn't imprison anyone politically during WW2, some used violence and were jailed.

What I do know is that you're pretty, blameless little USA imprisoned Japanese ethnics after Pearl Harbour.

Just take Das Boot or Stalingrad. These are 2 German films which are popular all over the world which actually makes you feel sad after watching them, not like Saving Private Ryan which ends with "The angels are on our shoulders" like a typical fairytale in a fairytale final cowboy battle.

  • ...Sweden has had concentration camps during the war when they jailed people who opposed Nazi Germany, and kept them up after the war was over. Where are all of the Swedish movies about that?

    See my point?

  • sweden didnt have have any concentration camps....

  • So here we are a typical Hystory Channel dogfight chapter with the damned and tiring custom of making planes fly pass the camera and make it shake (countless times here...) and a careful selection of events in which the protagonists, most of the times, are Americans who almost always manage to succeed at the end despite having had their lives at risk; but no chapter (as far as I know) about triumphant Jap aces (like Saburo Sakai), which there were...

  • They actually did a special on Sakai and paid him great respect as a fighter pilot (it might have been the Military channel instead of the History Channel). I cannot recall the date or exact program, but they did Sakai right. Remember, this is an American show...it's much more entertaining to American audiences if the Americans win, y'know?

  • Yes, I know it´s an American program for an American audience; but showing always (or almost always) the same results (victorious Allies) is showing just part of history, and American people who don´t know much about this may believe that results in every combat were always the same successful for Americans, which of course wasn´t true at all... Why not a better balance of combat results?

Hiding or selecting info is, in other words, a "nice" way to MANIPULATE historical data.

  • After June 1942 in the Pacific, were there any decisive Japanese victories? The answer is no. The counter-argument would be most people watching the History Ch. already have a working knowledge of history and know the ins and outs of WW2. These are selected events that most people would not know about unless they were intimate with the event to start. Is it an overly rosy picture? Yes. And a better balance in the Pacific after June 1942 would be a boring assortment of draws and small US wins.

  • I disagree. Seeing an entertaining show like this will grab the interest of someone who doensn't normally have interest in History, and make them want to learn the rest of the story which is out there on their own

  • Great point. you sir, win an Internets!

  • Why don't you go read the history of the United States Navy. People like you piss me off. Always with the ignorant American this, the uninformed American that. Show me any other outcome and we will have a chat, otherwise, sit the fuck down and shut the fuck up. Where are you from, Europe??????

  • You should try and relax, and don´t take it that serious: I WAS ONLY CRITISIZING THOSE WHO WORKED IN THIS SERIES, whose style I´m afraid don´t like so much. I´m not as stupid and naive so as to critisize a whole nation WITHOUT A REASON. I´m not one of those brainless people who insult the US "just for fun". I never insulted the whole US, nor have a reason to. I know well Americans won the war, and I trully AM proud of it. I´m on their side, be sure of that, so don´t take me wrong, please.

  • We did win, REMEMBER!

  • winners write history, live with it

  • Again!? Didn´t you understand yet what I mean? Come on... Read carefully my reply to sakoshooter48. I´m not as idiot as you probably think I am. Sorry, but it does annoy me when people go over and over with the same thing.

I´ve seen other documentaries on this, also from the standpoint of the winners, which I liked better than this series; that´s all. Can´t I have my own tastes? Please, don´t make me be nasty and don´t bother me again with this, because it really is starting to be tiring.

  • 20mm cannons did not have better range than .50's...

  • why his rear gunner with twin 30-cal. not shooting back is he dead?

  • Reportedly, he was being thrown about so violently he was unable to bring his weapons to bear.

  • the rear gunner is being subjected to 9g turns,he can barely keep his head up,much less swing the gun. This whole fight was a banking frenzy.

  • No, but he's pretty shaken up over the high G's.

  • wtf the zeros got killed... wow shit pilots

  • yes,i think japan was running short on pilots by this time. They were probably rookies...even so,to kill any zero with a slow SBD is awesome. The SBD is also heavily armored...but the zeros DID have 20mm cannons,so it wouldn't matter much.

  • that guy had skills lol junking zeros is not easy

  • The Zero was much more maneuverable than the F4F.

  • the hellcat is the f6f and it was nicknamed the "zero killer" for a reason, although you are correct, the zero was a better plane than the f4f wildcat.

  • As long as it didn't get in the way of the 50's of the F4F.

  • What the heck?!Its true! The hellcat destroyed the zeros!

  • Each plane is better at its own thing. No plane is truly better than the other.

  • no plane is better than the other? what kind of statement is that? i can certainly tell you that the f-22 is better than the wright flyer.

  • Wrong, the F-22 is good at what it is designed to do. The Wright flyer was designed to get up into the air and prove that flight was possible. The F-22 is designed to be a high tech air superiority thingamabob and does well at its designed purpose for its own time, as did the Wright flyer.

  • i think that one man survived 45Gs but almolst died..... but that wasnt ona plane. astronauts tody face about 8Gs...

  • 4 Gs. Not 8.

  • zero better than hellcat

  • WILDcat,the hellcat kicked the zero's ass!

  • you are right

  • i think that for every hellcat that was lost, 7.5 zeros were shot down (by hellcats)

  • i HEARD that!! the wildcats got their tails handed to them by the zeros the hellcat was the zeros worst enemy(aside from all americans)

  • yes the hellcat was the zeros worst enemy but there was a other american plane that could kick the zero's ass the F4U Corsair

  • yes,the F4 corsair was an excellent plane. The zeros were outmatched by 42'.Some zero pilots found out the hard way they had mistaken the hellcat for a wildcat since they were very simiar looking. They would try to out climb the hellcat thinking it was a wildcat.Bad call for the unfortunate zero.

  • too true Hellcats and Corsairs For the win

  • no its not

  • i'm neutral because zeros are faster and more maneuverable, but thin on armor.

  • only in the begining were they faster, by the end of the war the zero was being outstripped by the hellcat and the corsair in all but manuevrability.

  • 9 FREAKİNG Gs, thats even to high for today

  • freakin 9 Gs!

  • white zeros were the japanese army airforce right?

  • The Japanese Navy

  • Anyone knows the kill/death ratio between wildcats and zeros?

  • F6F was ten to one

Foss said if one F4F was against one zero, the

    F4F was outnumbered

  • I remember reading from somewhere that as long as there are more than one Wildcats, they may be even able to defeat a larger group of Zeros. I dont think that the Zero really outclassed the Wildcats

  • Thach weave maneuver was designed to allow

F4Fs to kill zeros. Teamwork is what Navy is

    all about.

Make no mistake the zero was a formidable fighting airplane. Pilot and airplane combo is

what wins fights and Japan lost a lot of good pilots in the early part of the war.

  • True that Teamwork is really important.

Those inexperienced pilots made the Zeros less powerful than what it is supposed to be.

  • wild cats and zeroes? it was like 4 to 1 in the wildcats favor, i think, at least at guadal canal

  • sometimes i do think that the zero is really overated

  • dude, dogfights was my favorite show! but they took it off the air in the second season D:

    and they didnt do repeats!

GRR im mad but nice video, this episode was one of my favorites :D

  • do u ever see how it always says, they must turn into there enemy, i hate doing that in my games but some how it always works!

see you do learn stuff from TV! rofl

  • the rear gunner is exposed to all shells

  • I wish he was an ace in da SBD. Tat'd be nice...

  • i wish they would make some more of these

  • what do they mean by 'the rear gunner is neutralized in a dog fight'?

  • Eldriant, it's the guy who sits behind the pilot with a machine gun. You'll see him at 5.39.

  • The G-forces will disorient the rear gunner...b.c the pilot is making those crazy maneuvers

  • he tailgunner can't do a damn thing in that fight Eldriant the G-Forces are to strong. an it's very hard for him to get a shot off.

  • In a dogfight, the SBD had to exploit its strengths against the enemy's weaknesses. In order to survive and get the Zeros pitted against him, Vejtasa had to dodge their machine guns and cannon. Now, the SBD was slower than its Japanese counter, but it was able to take and inflict more damage and could make **9G** turns, throwing off the Zeros aim. The last one, frustrated by supposedly inferior American plane dodging its every attempt, finally tried a ramming attack - which killed him.

  • Oops, it was Vejtasa who turned the attack into a ramming one. In any event, the fragile Zero could not take it. Takes a lot of skill and guts to turn such long odds to his favor!

  • c'mon guys, the wars over ! I love this SBD pilot. The last zero pilot was so pissed he tried to ram him.that's hilarious.

  • It would be nice to get stories from Axis side, but the problem is that not many of axis aces survived the war. And most of axis accounts are at the early part of the war which may not be very interesting.

  • A lot of so called Jagdfliegerasse survived the war (e.g. Hartmann, Barkhorn, Rall, Schnaufer etc.). but in germany it is not political correct to show their air victories as shown here in history channel concerning the US fighters. a german film documentator would smash his career if he would make such a film showing the victory of an german fighter pilot even if he served during the 1st worl war as immelmann or udet.

  • That's not true, I think it was the first or second episode they showed The Red Baron and did nothing but say good things about him. The way the baron handeled the plane was absolutley amazing. Look it up guys, one of the best episodes.

  • Do you mean the german movie? I've seen this movie. Well, o.k. in this one he was characterized as an chivalrous soldier. But because of this many flim critics in german magazines/journals such as TAZ, Stern or even Spiegel tore up this movie in the air.

  • No, I meant the first episode of "Dogfights" I think it was called, "The First Dogfighters" or something like that. Shows the dogfights of the old bi-planes and it has the Red Baron in the episode.

  • Read " Der Ertzen und the Letzen" by Adolph Galland. The English version is called " The First and the Last". Excellent book. And Galland doesn't hate anyone. He just recounts the rise and fall of the Luftwaffe.

  • And if you are interested in the Japanese side, read " Samurai " by Saburo Sakai. Same. He just recounts the war. No hatred or prejudice.

  • Its got a Wildcat wasting a late model Zero!!...ARGHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAAH .. very very rearly indeed.

  • Great series but always the US or Allies views! ZZZZZzzzzZZZZ

  • great from?????? you know.

  • good from?somebuty that naver rote.

  • what game is that?

  • That's no game buddy... that's real WW2 footage!

  • This guy is a hero! He haves all my respect!

  • This guy's awsome. Flying a dive bomber, getting three kills, a
