I have been listening to Kurt's music for some time now, but, for some reason his songs are striking me with immense love when I listen to them lately. He is beyond incredible! A true Master.
This is positively brilliant and transcendent. You almost want to laugh at first how much he's disappearing into this performance, but I realized eventually what it was-- you rarely see people give themselves over this much to music. This can't be taught or learned. He is completely just going where the music tells him. Reminds me of Van Morrison in that way.
I will sing this song for Jazz night, Here in Poulsbo, Washington ; No more than a ten minute drive away from bainbridge, the place of death for the author of the words to this song. I hope to do very well in tribute to the beauty of this song, and the connection of my soul to the words. I hope it comes out well. :3
Delighted to see this video of one of my favorite of KE's songs up here and to see how many of us there are who deeply dig this most generous of artists. With every note he sings, he reminds us of the best of our human possibilities. I do believe that by singing the way he does, he's become one of the clearest spiritual teachers on the planet.
I just LoVe this man. ...Who else can make you feel the way he makes you feel when you hear his voice? ...He's a musical Legend in My book. And a humble man.
He [his music] literally Changes you. Thanks for posting.
omg!!! i can sing this song all but that rediculously long series of notes he just sings with ease! that kills me everytime! this man has serious skill. and a heck of a set of lungs!
Thank you so much for uploading this. Like most people who say this I was utterly amazed. It is without a doubt my favourite performance on the show thus far - and, to be fair, that's not easy. Amazing voice and poem and interpretation
In repose I am humbled, and in awe at what these three kings of their instruments have royally brought to my hungry ears and I am enriched. Thank you, thank you.
christ, somebody give an award to this man. he sings sooooo beautifully and tenderly. that is also a great poem from roethke, and interpreted greatly by elling. AMAZING performance. thx for the upload.
OMG thanks so much for posting this. Someone else used to have it up but there account got suspended and I have been going crazy looking for it but no one had it. This live version is amazing, the recorded is just not the same. Thanks again!!!!

Kurt wrote the tune to Theodore Roethke's beautiful Poem, "The Waking".
Roethke drowned in a friend's pool in Bainbridge, Washington in 1963.
His last teaching job was at the University of Washington. He would have loved to
have heard Elling sing his poem.
