the psychology of the characters was just totally lost on me in season 4.. They were starting to act wacky towards the end of season 3.. Then in season 4, they were just totally unpredictable..
But yeah, what made the OC so special was the combination of drama & humor, without marissa the drama was gone and season 4 was just about relationships.. "funny", "cute" but not what we were used to. I had problems with marissa's character many times, but the truth is after each big drama she caused (ruining her relationship with atwood), i couldn't wait till she & ryan get together again. I liked the 3 first episodes of season 4 through, they were dark enough (for ryan) not so much for summer.
Well i agree with you, but the thing is the writers knew season 4 was going to be short (16 episodes), they couldn't spent 10 episodes showing the characters dealing with marissa's death. I think the main mistake was the taylor&ryan storyline. I liked them together, don't get me wrong.. They were funny and all BUT it was too soon and i didn't recognize ryan at all (saying "i love you", be that close to her.. I don't know something was wrong).
This is the worst written scene ever. Marissa's death was HUGE - for everyone, and this had to have been the worst way for them to show Summer going through it. I lost a life long friend of mine when I was 12, I am 22 and I am still not okay with it most of the time...
I HATE that we never saw the other main characters reactions when they were told that Marissa had died. I would have personally loved to have seen the acting skills and faces from all the others, but mainly Julie, Summer and Seth. I also HATE that we never saw Marissa's funeral. I don't know, it just seemed really cheap and fast how they just skip all that amazing viewing they could have shown us.

This scene was good, if they kept going on with the same sad sentimental mood that they did the whole season up untill this episode the whole season would have just been sinister and sad. This scene took the OC back to being a little more cheery again, and is good, it saved the season from being all about marrisa's death

it's not something that you want on your shoulders all the time. it's easier to act like it never happened, sometimes. but, that's not even what they're doing. and julie REALLY grieved over marissa. and summer, too, she just changed her whole life and how she does things. julie started taking pills, too. and she couldn't concentrate on anything, like having proper conversations with people. marissa's death was actually a good thing, though, because julie changed, and so did summer.

It wasn't their decision to kill off Marissa. Mischa Barton wanted to leave the show so they had to kill her off. They wouldn't have 'died' if she still wanted to be on the show.

Killing Marissa off was the best and worst disision for the show.
Had she of not died the show probably would still be going, very dragged out and most likely revolved around their kids.
Killing her off let two new characters bloom and had a nice ending and storyline to carry on from.

It wasn't their decision to kill off Marissa. Mischa Barton wanted to leave the show so they had to kill her off. They wouldn't have 'died' if she still wanted to be on the show.

Giving Marissa a 'downward spiral' in her life, and then killing her off, was the worst decision ever made in the series history.
It would have gone on for so much longer had her character had a different fate...

She didn't want to be part of it anymore. Plus, I think season 4 was better without her. It was lighter and happier - there was no drama like in season 3 :/

I agree with dwswh. Made me sad at first but then I couldn't stop laughing. I love Summer and of course Seth.
I think the fact that Marissa died kind of killed the show. Because she was like the troublemaker, you know, the one with the alcohol-issue and everthing.
