i love their song matalii ja mustii but since then i have been seeking more of their music to add to my ipod. this and a few others have definately made the cut :D
Tämä vanha Värttinä on paljon parempaa ku nykyynen! Ne keskittyy täs enemmän lauluun ku esiintymiseen, ja musa kuulostaa airolta kansanmusalta eikä hatusta revityltä.
Värttinä is one of Finland's great gifts to the world of music. The harmonies are fantastic, the musician-ship outstanding, and the lyrics haunting and poignant. Kiitos!
I always thought that about Finnish music. Maybe because it has influences from both Nordic music (which is where Celtic music came from) and Russian music (which I believe was influenced by Middle Eastern music). I could be wrong, but it's fun to think about.
Well, with all due respect, there's really no such thing as "Celtic" music. At the very least, we have no idea what Celtic music would have sounded like. Since a physical presence of ethnic Celts in the British Isles is increasingly disputed, genres such as Irish traditional music cannot truly be considered "Celtic." Irish traditional music is just Irish. For that matter, the genesis of Irish traditional music was in the seventeenth century, long after Scandinavians had significant influence.
When I say "Celtic music" I mean Irish music. I always heard that "Celtic music" means fiddle/pennywhistle/Altan type of music, while "Irish music" refers to more Irish Tenors type "When Irish Eyes Are Smiling" music. Whether this is true or not, it's what I learned and so it's the terminology I'm used to using. I'm not making any claims about ethnicity.
Understood. It's a common misconception. What you've heard described as "Celtic" music has been termed Irish traditional music by the musicians themselves. For more on that, check out Ciaran Carson's "Irish Traditional Music" (Belfast: Appletree Press, Ltd., 1986), 5. The term "Celtic Music" mistakenly came into vogue in the late nineteenth century, employed by observers who weren't really in the know. In the twentieth century, the term was resurrected by record companies for various reasons.
As to "When Irish Eyes are Smiling," that was a song written by a Tin Pan Alley composer named Ernest Ball circa 1910, none of whom were remotely Irish to the best of my knowledge. Tin Pan Alley was a collection of songwriters in New York City in the early 1900s. So it's pretty inaccurate to consider "Irish eyes" Irish music. It was popular vocal song that had an Irish-American audience. By the way, I meant no offense; just thought that this was an interesting thread.
Whoever got the idea of arranging this clip the way it ca be seen here was just brilliant! This music makes me feel is if I was in some kind of misterious place every time I listen to it :) This is just mavellous
they're one of my favourite bands... although i have to say that they are definitely better to watch with susan aho and the awesome johanna virtanen... :)
Yes, I agree.. They are so amazing, I met Susan Aho and Johanna Virtanen in New York City when Varttina performed in Central Park. What a show that was !! They autograped Kokko for me :)

The musician on the right side is still in service with Värtinää, she got some poundsmore on her hips but also improved her performance.

By traditional music, I mean traditional dance music (jigs, reels, hornpipes, etc.). Just to clarify.

Wonderful!
I play both piano and fiddle and it's hard to find music like this out there, let alone people who enjoy playing this with such feeling.

What's in my mind?
Who's there, in the center of my heart?
My darling darling is there, in the center
But why do I, a small whelp cry out my sorrow and longing. The harshness of days past.
In the bed by my darling. My beloved, the only one. The only true love. The only lover at my doorstep. His own love far away.
I wish I was by my love.
As a bird I'd fly
With golden heels
Do I have any luck, with the dice of life?

1992 or 1993, I'd say.
The song from Seleniko (1992), and there are only four singers, so Minna has left already (in 1992).
